    Description and Learning Objectives: This session will provide an introduction to the neuroscience of addiction and current knowledge on treatment efficacy. It will also critically assess the implications of addiction science for criminal responsibility. Following this session, participants will be able to:
    • Describe the neuroscience of addiction and drug abuse, including why individuals become addicted, and how addiction affects the brain and behavior.
    • Recognize the current knowledge base on the prevention and treatment of addiction and drug abuse.
    • Discuss what research on the neuroscience of addiction may add to existing behavioral models for purposes of improving doctrine and practice in the criminal justice system.
    • Discuss the relationship between explanatory models of addiction and criminal responsibility.
