  • If you're looking for the hike with the best view of Mont Blanc in the region, this one is it. The Grand Balcon Sud runs for miles of alpine ridgeline from Tre Le Champ across to Les Praz, and you can even continue along the trail all the way into Chamonix and Les Houches. Along the way, take the off shoot to Lac Blanc for the most magical alpine lake experience, and stop at the Lac Blanc Refuge for some coffee and snacks! This hike is known as one of the most spectacular stages of the Tour du Mont Blanc. If you're in Chamonix but don't have time to do the whole Tour du Mont Blanc, this is honestly the perfect Mont Blanc/French alps hiking experience.

Grand Balcon Sud has a little bit of everything for any hiker.
There are countless places to take the perfect photo, or to stop for a leisurely picnic and in Adam’s case a delicious Pop-Tart. The sparkling alpine lakes with panoramic views can take your breath away.
Elise was at her finest, she couldn’t resist the beautiful emerald lake and jumped right in, no hesitation, no shivering & no screaming. The water temp. has to be somewhere sud of 4° C!
Their final stop a small, quaint café where Adam loaded up on French coffee and ran the rest of the way down the mountain. It was reported he was last seen at Champs-Élysées doing one arm push-ups. I’m not sure what Elise ordered besides coffee but I would’ve suggested a small glass of ‘18 Chateau Pichon Lalande, Pauillac to help warm her up.

Haha this is great, Frans! And you're not far off with the warm-up/celebration. We climbed the actual Mont Blanc a couple days after this, and went with a delicious Pinot to celebrate (and numb the extreme muscle soreness) after we got down! ❤️

Oh ! you were « in my garden » as we say in France. One of my really preferred hike, that I do every year as a tradition 😊. Your movie is great. Re swimming in small altitude lakes, french authorities are considering implementing a regulation to not allow this, those lakes and their microbiomes are suffering (they found in the most popular spots for bivouac repellent and solar cream that those small lakes have not enough volume and water outflow to handle this), let’s see if this will be implemented. Glad to see you at home.

No limits! 15+ miles? Check.; 3,000-4,000 feet of gain?, check! 13,000-14,000 foot peaks? Check! Can you believe it? What a reprieve! Apparently, my heart is strong with completely free vessels; it was just the aortic valve that was shot to hell! I can’t go crazy, though; I AM 80 after all, but trail hiking seems to be a definite thing I’ll be doing after conditioning myself in the months ahead!

Where people get in trouble is when they cannonball into a freezing lake and it shocks their heart. We ease our way in, and even if we do want to do a dive in we make sure to put some water on us first so our bodies are ready for the coldness and don't go into shock. ❤️

This video put a smile on my face! I’ve always wanted to take an alpine plunge but honestly is scares me. I’ve been in cold water rafting - even glacier melt but with fleece, splash gear, etc. When you get out do you have a towel or just air dry? (Make your partner warm you up with a hug :) Any tips for a would-be alpine plunger??❤

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Год назад +1

Thank you so much! That's very generous of you, and it's a good question you ask. We always bring quick-dry towels if we know there will be water features to a hike. Once in a while we come upon an unexpected one, and then of course need to air dry. But either way, you know we're jumping in! As for tips, the best way to do it is actually slowly rather than all at once. Ease a foot in, and then go up to your knees, etc. The biggest danger of cold water is having your heart seize up and/or going into a kind of shock panic, and going in slowly will help a lot with both of those potential problems. Also, try to do it for the first time on a really warm day when you're actually looking forward to cooling off -- that's the best way to get started! ❤️

Do you really hike up the whole distance in that pace? Couldn't hike so fast even 40 years back in time. Your videos are always so refreshing, keep up the good work. Wishing you a great time in Europe and greetings from the Bavarian Alps ... Watzmann is calling ;)

Thanks very much, and yes, we try to keep a good steady pace when climbing. But of course we also often stop to film things (we spent about 5 minutes with those mountain goats, for example), so the net result is that we end up doing finishing routes in about the time of an average hiker. We will definitely look into the Bavarian Alps!! ❤️

Hi! Very nice route and pictures.😍
Please tell me what the route was.🙏
Where did you start and where did you finish and how long did the whole route take?
And what time of year did you go there?
I also wish with all my heart to go there❤️

Thanks Cristina! We started in Tre le Champ and then hiked all the way up and around past Lac Blanc and then continued down into town. Then we took a train back around to pick up our car at Tre le Champ. The hiking part took us about 6 hours with filming and lots of stops. You should definitely plan for longer than you think because you will want to stop often just to look around -- it is that stunning. We went in summer -- July, I think -- and it was absolutely gorgeous weather. Let us know if you do it! ❤️
