Summary:
Paste had the honor of welcoming the legendary Dave Davies into the NYC studio, known for his co-founding of British rock superstar band The Kinks, as well as his extensive and successful solo work. The singer and guitarist first sang "Path is Long" from his latest album released this past spring, Open Road, which was produced by Davies' son, Russ Davies. Dave Davies then induced nostalgia in all of the session's viewers when he performed "Strangers," a beloved track from The Kinks' 1970 LP, Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One. One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
There is no Kinks without Dave. He's a beautiful soul.
Tom Shaw The Kinks would be flat without Dave. He’s very much Ray’s equal. A completely beautiful soul indeed!
Something beautiful in hearing an old man sing a song he wrote, when young, about growing old.
He was 23
@@alexthemod2333that is young
One of the most beautiful choruses ever written.
i nearly cry everytime i hear "all the things i have i will give to you"
The Kinks: The Most Underrated Band of All Time
Who was better 'beatles or stones' =answer is kinks
amen ❗ 🙏 that..
@@zacd1419 said Bob Marley..and Hendrix
@@zacd1419 Also the Who.
Possibly the most underrated band of all time... strangers is one of the greatest songs of all time... pure beauty...
Bumped into Dave in London last summer and shared a coffee. Managed to recite him a poem of mine . Glory be to the kinks
Please share the poem here
Can’t hit the high notes anymore but the way he’s changed it sounds just as genuine and sweet. Belting performance.
I was scared of watching this, as I've kinda avoided Dave and his performances since his stroke, but I have to say... he sounds phenomenal! You can't tell he ever had any problems. It's truly inspiring. Dave, the Kinks, and their music keep bringing me joy and inspiring hope in new and different ways. Thank you Dave.
I know what you mean. I cried so hard, seeing Benny Mardones perform. It's heartbreaking seeing these amazing singers go through the hardships of life.
Same, I was so scared. But after watching this, I realised he's still got it :)
It's alright, now I'm not frightened of this world, believe me.
I felt the exact same way. I didn't want to see Dave struggle but the age in his voice just gives this track more gravity
I love any version he makes, more power to him that he did this after a stroke, i don't know if i could ever have that kind of power to recover this much. Seems inspiring to me and yes him and his bros music has kept me going and inspired me for many years, i play today thanks to these two beautiful souls!!!
I've always loved Dave's guitar playing. Great artist
you wrote a masterpiece dear Dave... one of my favorite kinks song.
Dave - so great and so underappreciated in the shadow of his brother one of the historic songwriting icons of the British Invasion. God save the Kinks.
Such a powerful song. The man writes from his soul. Incredible.
Dave's masterpiece, and one of the most beautiful songs ever!
“My mind is proud but I aches with rage, and if I live too long I’m afraid I’ll die.”
Those words resonated with me the first time I ever heard this song at age 18 in 1986.
Now that I’m 51... oddly enough, I’m not afraid I’ll die.
The song still resonates but instead of fading, the resonance has actually intensified over the years, now it proudly echoes with aching rage.
I'm not crying, I swear. Bless you, Dave. A treasure forever.
To me, this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
I Love You Dave Thank You
I'm melting. What an amazing rendition.
My brother bought me Lola vs Powerman for my 12th birthday. It was my first album. I got to Strangers and it was set in stone-this is the person I want to be.
Hearing this draws a tear. Beautiful.
I so wish there were more live recordings of Dave out there with good sound engineering and camerawork like this one.
Dave may not have been as prolific as his brother, but nearly every song he wrote that appeared on a Kinks album is incredible including this one.
Interesting you say that because I observed that even as a teen. Dave didn't write much but what he did was great. Every song counts.
that's the way, Dave. The Music never stopped.
Blops!
WOW
Sweet sweet Dave. You can sing this song with so much feel and meaning. I still love it. Never give up the dream.
What an intense recording. Even though Dave seems a little out of rythm and lyrics he transports such a powerful feel
wonderful, and very brave. Thanks for singing this song again , Dave.
Really great song and performed with true emotion! Thanks Dave for all the great songs you've been a big part of!
Love Dave! A truly kind and spiritual soul. Even if they were pretty damn big at one time, The Kinks are still the most underrated band of all time. Thanks for posting Paste!
Yes sir !
Beautiful!
Dave gives it everything and it really touches your heart if you're a genuine Kinks fan....
He has got such a beautiful spirit. You can see it shining threw. He has such a humble vibe
Oh Dave. God love you. So beautiful 💕😍❤️🔥
powerful so moving Daves underrated
This version seems even more powerful, with the perspective of an older man reflecting on his life.
I always thought that it was amazing for young Dave to have created this in 1970, it was beyond his age at the time.
His other contribution on the album was Rats, which was more in the vein of the rocker you expected from Dave. I love this version!
So raw and vulnerable.
God, he sounds amazing!
Arguably the best Kinks song I've heard. The album version conveys so much emotion as he is talking about his departed friend ... It's really beautiful. This later live version is very nice as well.
The Kinks’ most beautiful song
A beautiful song!
Incredible unplugged song, sang with the heart and soul you’d come to expect from Dave Davies. So much talent in one sib ship 💋
Way to go Dave!!! Beautiful version!
So moving it feels like a hymn
Very affecting version, very brave after his stroke......Edwyn Collins likewise, brave and battling....
And if some tiny details are not perfect, he's earned the right. They don't matter at all.
Beauty in the eyes of the beholder.
Masterpiece
this is wonderful. How good it would be if Ray would join him one of these days
beautiful solo version..wow..Thank you.😊
Beautiful song, thank you Dave.
My wife and I had our first dance at our wedding to this song..... regardless of what it was intended to be about, it always felt like a love song to me.
One of Dave Davies best songs!
Honestly I started watching this and thought "Oh Dear!" The stroke and the years haven't been generous. Then I don't know if it was the soul of the song and/or the fact it was Dave singing, it just hit home.
Given the nature of the song you could never say lovely but I can say beautiful.
COIcultist so beautifully said.
Agreed. I felt the same. It takes the poignancy of the track to a whole other level. So much heart and soul. God bless Dave Davies. 💜
Conviction, honesty and something to say.
Considering he is 70 in this video and after a life-threatening stroke, he can still play with skill and hold the notes. A great man and musician.
@@carlteacherman194 Oh, you bugger! This has just come up as a responded prompt.
I don't know if I love or hate you. I've just spent a good three minutes crying my eyes out after watching this again.
Anybody else find themselves harmonizing with him on the choruses?
stvbrsn Absolutely. This is so incredibly powerful and poignant 💙
every time
Some of the most simple yet so powerful
Thanks for all the amazing songs over the years. There are too many to count.
Funny that a lot of comments I see these days are that The Kinks and Ray and Dave are so underrated. Traveling in the wrong circles perhaps!
After a while, when so many people are saying someone or something is underrated, the opposite is true! A paradox.
Love you Dave!
We'll take what we want and give the rest away.
This recording seems so sincere and wistful in contrast to the original song was exuberant and untamed
This is amazing
Beautiful song truly
Beautiful Dave, great song. Sounding so good.
Oh yes! Great to see/hear this! I wondered how Dave was doing, and it looks like he's doing well. Great song--in my Kinks top ten. Thanks for pasteing, er, uh posting!
Dave is doing GREAT, Ray is looking more frail sadly.... Lets hope they do an acoustic tour of smaller venues this year PLEASE !
One of my favorite Kinks’ songs. Was lucky enough to see Dave live twice in my life.
Really good, man.
wow.
Haunting and gorgeous rendition of one of his masterpieces! Bravo! . Dave wrote some mystical and profound songs in the Kinks and in his solo work.
Tears so beautiful
Bless this man....Love him. So many covers of this song but I always get drawn back here. There is something etheral, honest and raw about this that it touches your heart.
Beautiful song, Dave Davies, I loved the 'The Kink's' growing up and they have always been a very memorable band for me.
Exquisite
I read Kink ❤️🎶 got it from the library
One of my favorite songs of alltime
This is a beautiful song!
Great to hear his voice again

A very soulful and intimate perfomance. Beautiful.

This gem!!
You damn right! You can't listen to music without 'em.
Absolute Gift to music and a Legend.
Beautiful
I love watching Dave perform I miss it
Dave still sounds amazing
Wow this is a great performance. 👍
I think it’s beautiful
no puede ser más lindo!!!
a very underrated artist
We are two but as one DAVE and Ray amazing the voices it's an edge no one else has, its sort of heavenly so soft sound of the end of the some words they sing both have it the same. It's way their soft voices London accent togther with there emotion in the words ending
Legend!
Totally agree with HIGHBBOY 1. Very underrated group
Beautiful song...so underrated...side note: sonic quality way above average.
Still an all time great
love you Heidi 😍
and gad too..

The Kings-Eine Legende.
Man, can you imagine being as good as Dave "Death of Clown" Davies, and your brother is Ray? Fuck. What a family. Soooooooo good.
Apparently all (six of) the sisters could play and sing. Wonder what they would have produced in another era.
