Celluloid heroes is a brilliant, heartbreaking song about fame, and one of the best songs ever written about Hollywood. Ray Davies' sensitive vocals gives the song so much poignancy.
I love music !!! As I like to tell people, everything from Miles Davis to the Pistols. But I really, really love the Kinks. God Bless Ray, Dave and Mick Avory and RIP Peter !!!
When my sister-in-law’s two boys were small, I saw the older one hug his little brother and knock him down within the exact same motion. I always thought that moment encapsulated the sibling relationship perfectly.
Love these guys and have since You Really Got Me! Bought Arthur in the first week it came out and listened to it about 100 times in a row. Kinks were in Left Field right away in the glorious Sixties. Nobody compared!
Same here. The Arthur album permanently shaped my view of the world. Ray n Dave's dad's feeling about social standing and money made it to nyc many years later. Still proudly hold the same beliefs. Thank You Mr Davies, Dave and Ray. ❤
They had the craziest "Brotherly" hate/love musician-relationship. I keep hoping someday there will be a movie about them. It would be EPIC! btw.... First band I ever saw live, 1982. No other rock and roll story compares.
Truly one of the best rock bands ever, I love the Kinks!!! I love Ray and Dave Davies, this song is Dave’s masterpiece, he said he wrote it, looking out the window of his Hollywood Blvd. motel room. It’s perfection 👍🏻🙌👍🏻👍🏻
@alabhaois Not by us but definitely underrated by the business. You always hear people discussing The Doors, Stones, ACDC, Beatles etc but never are the Kinks mentioned in the "greatest" debates.
For me the only song that rivals the beauty of Celluloid Heroes is Waterloo Sunset. The Kinks Kronikles got me hooked and I have been a fan ever since. No one made beautiful melancholy like the Kinks. And they could rock too.
When they came out and 64, I was nine years old. It was always the Beatles, the kinks, and Dave Clark five. And the stones. But I always love the kinks.
@@alabhaois Clark is still alive. He owns the rights to his music and kept them off the market for decades. I have recently heard their music again so he must have started selling it. He is in his 80s and in poor heath. The sax man fell and broke his neck and died. Don't know if any others survive. See excellent PBS special on their induction to the Hall of Fame with Tom Hanks drooling all over them. My favorite band of the British Invasion. Also Paul Revere who has died.
Just found this beauty, lovely performances. I have always loved celluloid heroes ever since it came out. I saw the Kinks in 72 and 86 and they were really good both times.
What an amazing performance on Jay Leno! You have to realize that Ray Davies was 49 and Dave Davies was 46 at the time. They were as cool, fresh, and energetic as ever!
I was fortunate to see The Kinks on a free concert in Madrid (1986). One of the best concerts i ever been. The opening song was "Around the Dial", the one that i used as the intro to my radio shows.
Ray was 50 here Dave 46. They figured out early on as performers that their brotherly squabbles kept them in the press.. media. Even in this song they're smiling at each other. Both have said the hosility was grossly exaggerated. They are 4 yrs apart in age and Ray admits liked things his way or else. Dave said it actually helped their music style and choices. You'll notice most pics of them from early days on... they are standing side by side. As Dave says today...he's my brother and you always stick with family.
@@ann275 I have no doubt Ray did put Dave through hell physically and mentally since they were kids. I definitely have always thought Dave is the bigger better man for never having an interview where is asked about their squabbles ends with how much he will always love his only brother. I likely worded my post wrong. I meant the media 100% played off their fights for tabloid tv exploitation.
Dave Davies is one of the most underrated guitarists around. He invented distortion by cutting the speaker in his amp with a razor blade. It was pure genius.
I saw them on the tour to support the album Phobia around this time. Ironically, every song on Phobia is incredible except Hatred I hate it! Lol but gotta love the Kinks. Best pop band ever
Time to get an ad-block extension or add-on for your browser, so as to prevent that from happening [unless you are watching on a phone - I've got no suggestion on how to solve that]. Try that, and then watch the clip; you'll most likely enjoy a whole lot more, afterward.
Ray and Dave have made peace. From a BBC interview yesterday: Q: Will the KINKS Reform for the 50th Anniversary? A: ( Dave) Me and Ray get on well now ,we love each other and we WILL be doing something.
Oh, so would I! In fact I'm setting aside money just for that possibility. But the "doing something" that Dave mentioned is most likely won't be a whole concert. More likely a new track or two. Or an appearance on a TV show together. And i'm not at all sure that Mick is on board with any of it. It could just be Ray and Dave. But whatever the "something' is , I'll be happy.
I wasn't there but I Know somebody that went to all three days of the 1982 US Festival and he and his girlfriend said that the Kinks blew everybody away....That's a Statement.... check out the line up for all three days...some 18 or more bands....went to the 83 US Festival myself....wish I would've went to the 82 to see the Kinks.... How could Sir Ray possibly not see Dave's love for him when he sees the emotion he puts into his songs? It makes me wonder if Ray is actually an asshole?
Why the hell doesn't this have more than 100,000 likes? The Kinks are a treasure!

Nice to see the brothers playing together; they are incredible as a duo!
I remember seeing this performance back in the 1990s. At the time I never realized that my favorite band would soon disband.
The lads from Muswell Hill. As relevant today as they were in the 1960’s. Songs all about social commentary. Will always love & respect them. ❤️👌🙌

I was fortunate enough to see the Kinks three times. In England in ‘64, and twice in LA in ‘78 & ‘79. Great band!!!
