    FUN FACT:: Disenchanted originally wasn't going to be put on the album, but Mikey Way, the bassist for the band, really wanted it to make the final cut. His method to persuade the other members: to whisper "disenchanted" in their ears when the were asleep. But hey, props to Mikey, cause it worked

    "Suicide is a serious thing. And if you know anyone who is suicidal, you need to get them help. No one should be in pain. Everyone should love themselves.
    Like, you should never want to hurt yourself. You should love yourself." - Gerard Way
    "Look at me, with my pretty bracelet and tiara... I'm a f*ckin' princess!"- also Gerard Way
    MCR is definitely still one of my all time favorite bands, and TBP is one of my favorite albums. Seeing them live was a crazy experience, they really know how to put on a show. I hold the band and this album, as well as all the memories they gave me close to my heart.

    The meaning behind the album is the telling of a story of a character called The Patient, who is battling a disease, namely cancer. The album name; The Black Parade is also the alter ego that MCR took on during that era, and if you take the album in a more literal in respect to the story kind of way, you can see the meanings in the songs and what phase of death or what memory The Patient is recounting. For example, House of Wolves (which is extremely dark) can be taken as The Black Parade literally leading The Patient through Hell. The song Mama is about mother war, and how The Patient must have been a soldier who has had to kill people. We can gather this from the lyric, "Oh mother, what the war did to my legs and to my tongue." The song Sleep is one of the most interesting songs on the album in my opinion. It was written during the band's stay the the Paramour Mansion (a haunted mansion) where Gerard Way and his brother and bassist of MCR, Mikey Way both got night terrors (Mikey also left the Mansion for mental health reasons) and that song is mainly written about that, with the audio clips of speaking at the beginning and end of the song; the beginning saying "Like last night, they are not like tremors, they are worse than tremors, they are these terrors. And it's like, it feels like as if somebody was gripping my throat and squeezing and...", and closer to the end, you can hear Gerard screaming "Wake up!" over and over again if you listen closely, as this is very hard to pick out from the background noise. And finally at the end of the song, they bring back the voice recording which says "And I can't... I can't ever wake up." This song gives me the chills every time I listen to it. The song Cancer (which is definitely the most emotional song on the album) reveals the driving force behind The Patient's death. Another major thing that we can gather from the lyrics of this album, is that The Patient has definitely sinned many times throughout his life to the point where he is sent to Hell after his death. The Black Parade is almost a Rock Opera, and it really tends to make people emotional and tends to make people think, based on how intricately written, beautiful, dark, deep, and thoughtful it is. It is in my top 10 favourite albums of all time, thank you so much for listening to it.

    Rough concept of their albums:
    I brought you my bullets, you brought me your love (A Bonnie & Clyde type couple go on a spree and die at the end - roughly based on a movie)
    3 Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2 lovers are separated in a gunfight. The man dies, and makes a deal w the devil when he learns she is still alive. The deal is to kill 1000 evil men.)
    The Black Parade (about the cancer patient as already explained)
    Danger Days, The true lives of the fabulous killjoy (Gerard Way also wrote a comic book to go along w it. Post-apocalyptic 2019 everyone is controlled by BLI Corp, w emoting controlling pills.)
    Conventional Weapons- No theme. They had broken our hearts by breaking up by then.

    The whole album is a concept album that tells the story of The Patient, (who is dying of cancer), his reflections on his life, and his journey into the afterlife. It's a wonderful story.

    The Black Parade is probably the closest we have to a modern classic.
    And yeah, "The Trinity" is no problem, even if you say "The Emo Trinity" most alternative kids will accept that. But don't try to make it the emo quartett like so many people do these days because those groups are the bands that are friends and that toured together and MCR, FOB and P!ATD did that, twenty one pilots came way later. If you say "the quartett" in relation to the alternative scene most well versed people will think of All Time Low, The Maine, Mayday Parade and We The Kings. But that's just a quick alternative history lesson.
    I would agree that The Black Parade has a lot of influence on today's alternative and even non-alternative music. Most modern bands would name My Chemical Romance as one of their influences, followed by Brand New, Sum 41 and Death Cab For Cutie. But I don't know if "No Phun Intended" was influenced by The Black Parade since Tyler is very open with the fact that he didn't grow up on alternative music. So it might be but chances are it's not.

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp  6 лет назад +5

      I gotta throw Usher’s Confessions and Dr. Dre’s 2001 in the modern classic conversation as well because WOW, what amazing bodies of work they are. Interesting that Tyler didn’t grow up on alternative music, though! The Muse and MCR influence is pretty apparent to me so I wonder when he got around to listening to it! I haven’t heard from Sum 41 or Death Cab for Cutie in forever! Unfortunately, my musical ignorance kept me from caring about their music just because I thought their names were weird. I’m happy I checked out The Black Parade finally!! Wonderful listen 😊

    • @AceMusicFreak
      @AceMusicFreak 6 лет назад

      I didn't listen to either of those but that's because before finding alternative music, I was raised on Schlager, the Beatles and german Top 30 which didn't include any Rap and Hip Hop, at least in the late 90s and early 2000s.
      I'd say his bandmates from the early twenty one pilots were into alternative so it might be that he picked it up then.
      Sum and Death Cab were never really successful in the mainstream (unlike blink-182 or Green Day), which makes them non-controversial. The elitists like them, the younger, pop leaning fans like them and if you go to an alternative party you'll have both artists on the playlist.

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp  6 лет назад

      The Anna I see! Well, Usher’s album “Confessions” was one of the best R&B albums to ever be created and is one of the few perfect albums (imo) in existence. I grew up on R&B and Funk, so R&B’s been my favorite genre forever. Stuff like The Isley Brothers, James Brown, Al Green, Otis Redding, George Clinton, Zapp & Roger, El Debarge, Prince, etc. I even listened to a lot of Sting and Seal growing up too. But yeah, “Confessions” is incredible Other albums I think are perfect include Miguel’s “War & Leisure” that came out last year, “Purple Rain”, “Thriller”, Earth, Wind & Fire’s “I Am”, Me’Shell Ndegéocello’s “Bitter”, Adele’s “19”, SZA’s “Ctrl”, Musiq Soulchild’s first three albums - “Aijuswanaseing”, “Juslisen” and “Luvanmusiq”, JMSN’s self titled album, Brian McKnight’s “Anytime”, Frank Ocean’s “nostalgia, ULTRA”, Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic”, and Alicia Keys’ “As I Am”, to name a few 😂 sorry, once I get going on R&B, I tend to ramble on for a while lol

      1000 gecs, mbdtf, tpab, plenty more out there, at least 40. Each of these were extremely influential for the genres surrounding them. 100 gecs EDM/pop duo, influenced so many, Kanye with mbdtf, same with Kendrick. And don't even get me started on more alt music or jazz. Also love it or hate it that Billie Eilish album is a classic as of how crazy big it was and influential it was int Erma of simple yet complex production and anti pop message, even if it was kinda cringe at times.

    G noting us right outta the gate. Its like you WANT us to all start sobbing uncontrollably...
    Also fun fact! Mama was written because someone bet the band that they couldn't write a good Polka song. needless to say I think they proved them wrong lmao
    fun fact #2 ; Disenchanted originally wasn't going to make the album ,but Mikey (the bassist) had a weird affinity for it and convinced the rest of the band to put it on. Its now become a favorite among many fans
    This is the last fun fact I promise: There is a popular theory among fans that the band is going to reform in 2019. The proof is compelling. firstly, The band has said that they are heavily inspired by The Smashing Pumpkins who were a band for twelve years then broke up and came back after six years. MCR also broke up after 12 years. Not only that but six years would be 2019 which it coincidentally the year their fourth studio concept album "Danger Days" is set in. Of course its just speculation but its nice to have that hope. There is other proof I can't be bothered to write out. They contradicted themselves a few times before the band broke up. Y'know the usual.
    Glad you enjoyed this album its definitely a classic. It turned 10 years just last year. its crazy how long its been. Also I want to say thanks for always liking or responding to comments. Its always nice to know that my comment was seen :)

    honestly even if you don’t like the album it’s okay ( we’ll carry on )(ha I hate myself )just knowing that you took the time to react to them and listened to the suggestion and stuff makes my day
    btw the concept of the black parade is a cancer patient and when he dies death comes for him in the form of le parade bc that’s his fondest memory I think that’s what I’ve been told also I think mama is about war and the guilt soldiers feel when it’s over (I guess it is a little terrifying lol)
    I’m not good at explanations but that’s the basic thing and stuff and yeah
    also love ur Batman robe lol
    Edit number like 7* hOLy HeCk He LIkEd It :D
    Edit number like 8* I love how sometimes he doesn’t know what beat to bang his head to so he pauses for a minute and then resumes banging his head
    Edit number like 9* “this is the whole en chilada”
    Edit number like 10 (I’ll stop soon...)* yes Gerard Way is the singer that is a correct statement
    Edit number like 11(I realize nobody’s gonna read this if I don’t stop soon but I can’t help it* I think it’s really interesting that you think no phun intended might’ve taken some inspiration from tbp
    *CoNsPIrAcYyyYy ThEorRrrYyYyYy*
    Edit number 12 I’m done for real this time I think I hope* if you do react to another album I recommend probably danger days (4th album) or Three cheers for sweet revenge (2nd album) I absolutely adore the first album they made, but I dunno I don’t think that they had really established the sound or style then.

    And now we come to the band that I know best. I could go on for hours about My Chemical Romance. They honestly mean so much to me that, to this day, they're one of my favourite bands. They not only saved my life, but gave me inspiration with what to do with that life. MCR is such an emense factor in who I am that I can't imagine my life without this band.
    They draw inspiration from a lot of sources, but the main ones are Queen and The Misfits, and it's shows in their theatricality and Gerards delivery.
    The band itself was formed just after 9/11, which Gerard was devastated by. That event made him realise that time was short, and by July the next year the band was together and their first album was out.
    The band is made up of Gerard Way on vocals, his brother Mikey on bass, Frank Iero on one guitar and Ray Toro on the other. A lot of My Chemical Romance sound is due to how Frank and Ray play together, Frank with his more punk rock style and Ray with his more classical guitar style, aswell as Gerard having a love for musical theater and the macabre.
    Quick Note before I get on to the actual album: you'll notice I didn't mention a drummer in the band line up. Well, my chemical romance has never really had luck with drummers. They started with Matt Pelissier, moving on to Bob Bryar (The drummer for this album) and then finally James Dewees. All left for some reason or another, and I think Bob was the one that hung around the longest (which isn't saying much)
    Okay, finally to the black parade itself. It is honestly close to a masterpiece in my eyes. This album in particular was inspired by Pink Floyd's "the wall", and you can really tell by the character and the instrumentation. They wanted it to be a classic album and in my eyes that's exactly what it is.
    I'm so glad you like this album, and I highly suggest listening to the other albums aswell, especially Danger Days which I personally think is their best album (though I Brought You Bullets is my favourite.) you should listen to their earlier albums before Danger Days however, as it's a big change for the band and context is needed for how big of a change.
    If you liked this and didn't mind the screaming too much, I suggest listening to Avenged Sevenfold. They're a metal band, so a step up in the heavy factor, but not too much of a step. I'd save it for after My Chem though, so you acclimate a little.
    I also suggest The Decemberists if you want to listen to a more theatrical band. They're another one of my favourite bands at the moment. They're a little folky but they have their own little thing that makes them fantastic. More R.E.M than Mumford and Sons.
    As always, thank you for the review. It's always a blast to watch you experience an artists for the first time, especially one that means so much to me. Keep doing what your doing, which is awesome.

    Something not many people pick up on in famous last words because of the powerful music is the content of the song. It was written for Mikey (Gerard's brother, the bassist) because he suffered from severe depression and even tried to off himself during the making of The Black Parade. I personally think Gerard blamed himself for letting Mikey get so bad and that if Mikey will get better Gerard might stop hating himself ("honey if you stay I'll be forgiven")
    All in all this is an amazing album and people are so quick to judge mcr ("eww emos are so weird" etc...) They don't take the time to look at the lyrics, learn the background stories and learn all the struggles the members went through throughout their lives...
    So happy you liked it

    I'm so sorry for your loss, I've lost loved one's to cancer as well and that song really embodies the emotions I went through coping with their loss. I always love watching your reactions because they're so genuine! I would love it if you could react to the song Melanie Martinez released about the controversy with her and Timothy, "Piggyback". I would also like to hear your opinion on the situation because you are, again, always so genuine with your reactions.

    When I noticed you uploaded this reaction I was in school and find a time to watch it like twelve hours later. You have no idea how excited I was for this....I'm pretty sure somebody already explained the concept if the album to you so I'm not gonna go into that. What I want to really point out though is your comment on the instrument solo parts being nice touch. Sometimes it seems to me that people don't really appreciate the beauty of instruments and I'm glad you pay attention to these things. I couldn't wait for you reaction to Mama and all I have to say, you reacted the same way I did, when I first heard it. Though after some time I understood its place in the album and I realized how much this song fit for the concept and what can I say, I fell in love with that song. The Black Parade album will be remembered for a long time in my opinion. Just when I think about how many people still come back to this album or are just discovering it, or how many people covered songs from this album and paid tribute to it on its 10th anniversary.....I think you got it right how big impact this album had and still really has. Or maybe I'm just too big fan of them that I can't see that The Black Parade wasn't really that big.

    • @TheTuneUp

      Haha!!! Well, thank you for not only watching but for giving me more insight!! I think this album was huge for its time though! Thank you for reacting to my second favorite album of all time! This is a concept album about a man called "The Patient" dying of Cancer and the songs detail the thoughts he's having on his death bed. In Famous Last Words, where the album normally ends the lyric "Nothing you can say could stop me going home" is meant to be interpreted by the listener. Is home his actual home and is he dedicated to beating cancer and living? Or is home heaven where he can rest from all his worries?

      Okay okay okay I have cried and kinda processed but this is gonna be a mess so bear with me.
      1. "The whole grand enchilada" god fucking bless
      2. The lead up to the triggering g note has me cackling
      3. I was grinning like a madman the entire video and flailing and just generally dying but in a good way ??
      4. Your face during mama made me mentally piss myself, if that's even a thing, idk, I said this was gonna be a mess, I'm sorry
      5. ChOrD pRoGrEsSiOnS yEs!!@@!
      6. The fucking minute and a half of silence before blood still somehow confuses me and I've been listening to this album for years, it's a curse or something
      7. "We're Just gonna skip black parade- psYCH!" That's all that needs to be said about that
      8. I CAN'T REMEMBER IF YOU HAVE LISTENED TO IT ALREADY BUT TOP DID A COVER OF CANCER AND I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOUR REACTION (the fans are pretty split about it)
      9. I'd just like to put it on record that mama live is somehow 10 times creepier than what you just heard soooo
      10. God fucking bless you, dude, this made my night. Thank you so much for another great reaction and for making me almost scream in excitement and letting me have an excuse to listen to this album again (not that I really need an excuse lmao)

    Sike, one more here. What you said bout how music heals, I completely agree.
    Twenty One Pilots stopped a problem before it started, for me. I was lonely at one point in my life, and it was awful. I was always wondering what my purpose was.
    Twenty One Pilots really inspired me to get back up again, and I can say that I am at the best point in my life so far. That's actually the main reason why - if you remember - Taxi Cab means so much to me. If I ever were suicidal, that would be the song that would save my life.

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp  6 лет назад +1

      Hahaha thank you!! Yeah, I figured since I blindsided people with the note the last time, why not go overboard with the warning? 😂 thanks for watching!!! 😊

    • @BrittneyLynne
      @BrittneyLynne 6 лет назад +1

      No problem. Love hearing your insight, music-wise. BTW, I didn't know what the G Note or getting G noted was until last month, so this whole thing has been really hilarious to me. I didn't realize MCR fans were so traumatized by the breakup....although I can't be too judgemental. PatD's Northern Downpour makes me tear up every time.

    i've been having an awful day (and it's not even 10 a.m. so you can guess it's not good) and this video really cheered me up, just rocking out to the songs with you was awesome, i'll definitely watch more of your content

  • @problematic7654
    @problematic7654 6 лет назад +3

    Omg I'm so happy that you liked the album because it means so much to me and tbh I didn't think you'd like their style of music that much :D But I am really happy you did! I love your insight on things and I love how you don't just listen but also say what you like and comment on the production and everything.
    Another album I think you might like is 'that's the spirit' by bring me the horizon... Personally I love their previous album 'sempiternal' but you said you don't like screaming that much and that's the spirit is bmth going into more of an alternative rock direction. You should definitely check it out!

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp  6 лет назад

      That’s what I was told! I was told I wasn’t gonna like their style!! Still up for a verdict though because I haven’t heard all of the albums, but I loved this one!!!
      I faintly remember Bring Me the Horizon, but I don’t remember if I liked their music or not lol I can definitely check it out though!! 😊

    • @problematic7654
      @problematic7654 6 лет назад

      The Tune Up And I'm so glad that you didn't listen to the people telling them you wouldn't like it and checked it out yourself :D if you liked this one I think you would really enjoy their next one Danger Days as well ☺
      And as for bmth... Up until Sempiternal they've been more hardcore, sometimes even screamo in their first two albums, but That's the Spirit is very very different and more of the stuff I think you might like, there's also a lot of introspection and verrrrry dark lyrics going on, a lot to analyse :D

  • @curtisd5864
    @curtisd5864 6 лет назад +1

    The reaction itself coupled with the depth and breadth of the analysis afterwards is fantastic. Definitely subbed & going through your other pieces in the future. Thanks!

    Hey, I'll never understand all that production stuff. Unless it's obviously cringey, it's all good to me. But, I've been a poet and creative writer since grammer school and pianist since 13. I studied classical music & composition in college. So I'll always be listening to meter, analyzing verse, it's meaning and symbolism.
    After your break, if you find yourself going through MCR's library (I hope), you should check out Frank Iero too. He was rhythm guitarist. His band is "and the Patience" now but it was the Cellabration. I liked "Stomachaches" best. He recorded it in his basement studio and played everything himself except drums on one song if I remember right. Yet it made some rock magazine's top 10 rock album the yr it came out. It didn't sell very well bc he realised it himself which is a shame.

      Haven’t forgotten about your Frank suggestion. Kudos to how you listen to music. To each their own.

    Sorry I'm only seeing this video now a year later because WOW this was an amazing reaction!! I love how honest and down-to-earth you are! Definitely gained a new subscriber from me! :-)
    Also, The Black Parade is one of my favorite (if not my #1) albums of all time so seeing your reactions to each of these songs (including the B-sides loved that!!) made me so happy! The concept, lyrics, and musical composition hold a very special place for me, especially as I've continued to lose loved ones over the years. Going back to this album always gives me a life-affirming sense of hope... despite all the really dark stuff in it lol. Anyways, just wanted to thank you so much for giving such a great reaction to an album that really hits close to home. :-)
    P.S. One of my favorite things about "Welcome to the Black Parade" is that in an interview when talking about the concept, Gerard Way was explaining how he likes to imagine that when the time comes Death will approach you in the form of your most special/fond memory. In the case of the main character The Patient, it comes to him in the form of a marching band that his dad took him to see when he was a young kid. That has always given me comfort.
    P.P.S. LOVE the Spider-Man poster in the background!!! :)))))

    When he said Mama was next I first just said, "Oh dear" and then evil laughed because that song is insane! It's my third favourite from that album.
    (Edit) My favourite line from a song is the line "drop the dagger and lather blood on your hands Romeo" from the song The Sharpest Lives. It's so DRAMTIC?!

    at first the silence before “blood” seems a little confusing at first, but it was put on there for the ppl who listened to the physical copies. the silence at the beginning is supposed to make the listener think the album is over, but once they continue listening, another song plays. i thought it was a cool little touch

    Kill All Your Friends is my favorite b-side. The sound of it is so cool, and the lyrics seem so sad but the way it fits with the music is happily. It seems kind of ironic the way it sounds, that’s why I love it.
