For those whose computer crashes after using the blend tool: I was playing around and found a way to do it that avoids this. I used the blend tool but just used like 20 steps (It would look like a zigzag)...then what I did was to unify all those copies so they become one and then erased all the corners, leaving just the first and the last one. And tada! you get the same result :) I hope this helps!
nice work!! just little correction about "dark blue shadow" in letter "O". its more logical if the the initial shadow point is on intersection of "dark yellow shadow" and "light blue object". sorry my english is limited, hope u understand what i mean.
Very enjoyable vid. Got it to work, although the 500 blend crashed AI on the O so had use the pen tool to draw the curved shadow. I don't think you mentioned holding ALT when using the Shape Tool to delete various parts.

if you keep running into the 500 blend tool/pathfinder problem... direct select the color you DONT want to edit Select>Same>Fill Color and the lock it...repeat that for all except the blend...then pathfinder unite each letter blend separate..it takes some time but its doable.

How did you isolate the stroke towards the end? My stroke is cemented to the layer so that when I duplicate it, it duplicates the whole text (object) layer.

Found it really hard to follow at the white lines section and when finished the shadows under white lines don't marry up (on different letters ie Y or A) to the white lines so the white looks like it's floating. Main shadow also looks odd, wrong shape. Sorry but just doesn't look right to me.

When I use the blend tool my laptop gets crazy slow...and I was doing it only to one letter! Is there a way to make it less "heavy" for the laptop? I have a Macbook Pro :/
Same for me. Crashed Illustrator when doing the shadow on the O. I would try going for maybe 200 instead of 500. I doubt the blend will look any different

I'm trying to recreate this but I don't know what's wrong with my blend tool, it doesn't make smooth blends, I usually do 255 steps since I always use it for irregular shapes and works fine, but for this I even tried using the same font you used and it makes sawtooth (worse with 500 steps) :S:(
Hey, i'm two month late, but i was struggling with the same thing, but i find a solution if you still need it and anyone who's passing by. The problem appear because you have the "Align to Pixel Grid" options activated. You can find it in the options (up-right corner) of the "Transform" panel. For existing objets, you have to select them first and then turn off Align to Pixel Grid using the checkbox at bottom of Transform panel. Hope that'll be usefull

Not to be rude or anything but the light is coming from a 45 degree angle, therefore the light on that O shouldn't be straight down. Anyways, it's really cool. I like it.
I think he's referring to the dark blue color on the O. Your light source is coming from the upper left, but the dark blue color on the O says otherwise. The dark blue color you put on the O would be if the light source was coming from the top, or directly above the O. Regardless this is an excellent tutorial and it helped me learn some new tricks. Really appreciate the work you put in.

uhm, i cannot for the life of me delete those two halves of the upper and lower stroke for inside the letters. how on earth does one go about doing that?
When I try to draw in the shadows (dark blue) the placement of the pen tool is off. I click on the corner of light blue piece and it places my starting point below it by like 5 pixels. It's driving me insane!

Quick tip: Hold Shift while using the eyedropper and it will apply that color to whichever one (the fill or stroke) you have selected.

Use the pen tool (the one with the + symbol to ADD anchor points), not the pencil tool.

Press Command + H in Mac / Ctrl + H for windows, your anchor points will be visible after that :)

your processor is probably bottlenecking the rest of your computer. Your graphics card and the amount of ram you have are too good for your processor
