  • In this video I review a new product, the DWRAF II Smart Telescope from Dwarflab. I show you what's in the box, how to use it, and what it can do, with imagery of the Sun, galaxies and a nebula that I have taken with it. Then I give my opinion on the product, and my opinion on who it's most suited to.

    Excellent review, thank you! I pre-ordered one of these at the weekend and I can't wait to receive it. I've always been interested in astronomy and the night sky in general, and always wanted to take pictures of deep sky objects. I've had telescopes before, many years ago, but never really got a lot of use out of them. I think this Dwarf II will be so easy and convenient to use, though, that astronomy will once again become a hobby of mine. I'm also looking forward to showing my daughter what the night sky has to offer too. I see that you're in Portsmouth - I'm in Waterlooville!

    I wanted to add one more comment to this video. It is excellent in terms of training, learning how to use it exactly in the correct way. My thanks to Martin for putting this up…I added some specific steps based on what he presented to my file in my page on the Dwarf II unit in Microsoft OneNote. Thanks again Martin, this was an excellent review!

    I used to do quite a bit of AP, but my garden Observatory is currently out of action and I don't get much time to set up cameras etc anymore.. so ordered one of these as they look like the quick fix way of doing imaging and looks really well made

    Thanks for showing how easy it is to move photos from the device, to the phone, and then into your photos collection. I'm curious to see how well my Pixel can process those shots.

    I have one on order. The English weather prevents me from using my equipment regularly. I live in a first floor flat and I really need to be sure of clear skies in order to make it worthwhile setting up. This will fill the gap nicely with just a few minutes to set up and it’s great portability. I’m not expecting it to take great Astro photos but it will certainly fill a gap and allow me much more observing time on those nights when we have intermittent cloud.
    Can’t wait for it to arrive.

    Nice introduction.
    Regarding the rotation, you could add a wedge in order to emulate a GEM mount. Until the autofocus improves, you could try focusing at some distant building on the horizon before trying astrophotography mode, I suppose?

  • @PhilTParker
    @PhilTParker Год назад +3

    I received my unit and it works well. Very nicely packaged. Keep in mind that unless you specifically order it with the light pollution filter (as I unwittingly did not) you will only receive the solar lenses. I ended up ordering what I believe is a more premium version of a light pollution filter. Also keep in mind that the light pollution filter only allows you to view certain nebula, so try looking up the subject on RUclips for some great explanations of when to use them. NOTE: there IS absolutely an iOS version on the way.

    Thank you! I've just received one of these and have been invited to this year's meteor showers in August.
    I hope to master this by then.
    I'm just not sure what gain means.
    I've never done ASTRO photos but they really interest me. I'm quite excited to get started 😊

    • @martinsastrophotography
      @martinsastrophotography  Год назад

      Have fun with it! Gain is like ISO on a digital camera. A higher gain with make the signal stronger but will also increase the amount of noise visible in the image. If you experiment with different gain values you will see how it affects the results. Clear skies!

    I've been using the redcat51+ but there are so many nights that I walk away with nothing to show for it. Thought this would put some fun back in my astrophotography. Let this baby roll while I'm fighting with the other telescope. Also bought so I could use for the eclipse next year

  • @glennsmooth

    It actually grabs better data than you might think. The lazy geek was able to pull off a really nice shot from a polluted Tokyo sky. Wish it came with a Barlow but that will obviously reduce the exposure time. Going to order one for the nights I’m too lazy to drag out the big scope

    I cannot use an ordinary telescope scope because I have cataracts from a long term health condition.
    I fancy getting a smart scope like this, would you recommend this Dwarf over the Seestar? Or perhaps something else maybe?

      I would go for the Seestar. Check out my review of the Seestar which I released just a few days ago. The app is really great! If you do buy one please use the affiliate link in the description for the video…it will help my channel to grow. Clear skies!

    i do think experienced astrophotographers will love this… not for the photos themselves but to give yourself something to explore with while your other images are coming in. I use vespera and lately take 3 hr exposures often in CovalENS mode, wonderful images, however I will have fun playing with dwarf while waiting for those to complete….fun!

    • @mercury7
      @mercury7 Год назад

      @@gothicm3rcy426 my opinion has changed also… still optimistic they will refine because it is 100% software that is the culprit… but yeah… currently subpar …I own a vespera so primarily purchased to test…. But would feel pretty bad if this were my main scope

    If you put it on a tripod and aligned the base platform with Polaris would it reduce the filed rotation?

    • @martinsastrophotography
      @martinsastrophotography  Год назад

      Sadly no. It is an Alt-Az type mount so field rotation is going to be significant at high elevations.

    i am soon a starter in astrophotography and a little bit unsure if i should buy the dwarf 2
    its a good price for what it can do - but do you think it will take away the fun of searching for new objects in the sky? because it seems really easy to find things

    • @martinsastrophotography
      @martinsastrophotography  Год назад +1

      Interesting question. It depends what you enjoy. This telescope is not the traditional path to learning Astrophotography, which begins with a DSLR on a tripod, and then involves learning to stack images and adding a tracker to enable longer exposures (once you have learned to balance and polar align the setup). If you want to go on this traditional journey, and to learn all these techniques, then don’t buy a Dwarf II. If you want a portable device that “does it all for you” and which gives reasonable results, and you are not interested in learning the techniques of Astrophotography, then a Dwarf II is a good choice.

      If you order the deluxe package it comes with two (2) ND (Solar) filters and a filter holder. BOTH filters must be used as there are two (2) cameras.. Wide Angle and Telephoto.

      Yes, but only if you use the provided Solar Filter on BOTH lenses. This protects all the components inside and allows you to see the sun spots
