I _reeeally_ wanna mod my SNES classic, but I've been worried that I'm gonna F it up, killing my console in the process. This video is the first one I've watched that doesn't make the Hackchi+Retroarch installation/set-up seem intimidating! Its simple, well spoken, and concise, without a million clicks showing us all the intricacies and things that most people will never use.
I'm gonna have to get one of those USB host thingys ..but when I do, *this* is the video that I'm gonna come back to! Thanks again d00d👍🏻

as great as SNES Mini is , here's some fun facts : NES and SNES Minis use the same exact hardware inside. meaning you could play same games on both.
also a PSClassic is far more accessible due to selling a lot less and is hackable very easily and can support even more systems to run on it due to a bit more power in them. that's where i play my SNES games on now thanks to Retroarch , it can even run DS games with DraStic just fine. there's also apps like SM64 (and SM64 60fps) , Sonic Mania , OpenLara and more.

When it comes to these types of mini console mods, I try to keep it as stock as possible. The farthest I usually go is to add 5 or 6 more games onto it, (Chrono Trigger, Super Mario All Stars, etc) and calling it a day. I like to make it look like those games were there in the first place, with the copyright info and all. I also just find the folders to look ugly and unnatural for my kind of set up.

I have both the SNES Classic and Genesis Mini Model 1. And yes, while I do enjoy the games that are listed there, modding them both can make both systems better and it's made me happy.

I bought mine like, literally back in the day of 2017. For like, 2-3 years I used it as my little emulation machine, because I had no other console modded onto which to play such stuff. Once I got my Wii u and 3ds modded, it’s just sitting there…

Careful of the cheaper ones on ebay, they are most likely knock off, though some seem pretty good. I modded my SNES Classic back when they were a thing. I also have an echo10 sdcard adapter. Mine currently has a 32gb internal SD card with about 18gb in use which covers all systems including Sega CD, TG-16 CD, and more. N64 is pushing it and it is recommended to put on a stick-on heatsink right on the dip of the metal plate on the cpu. It has to be on the small side like .5x.5 inch and not much higher than a 1/4 inch, but that is all from memory. Since I got my Analouge Pocket, I haven't used the mini systems but the Genesis mini can do Sega CD, Analouge Pocket cannot do to the limits of its FPGA. N64 is best left to the Wii/Wii U.

Alright so I have a handful of things to say about this video , both to the creator of this and those in the comments. * iv modded about 30 of these consoles between NES , SNES classics , PlayStation classic and Genesis Mini first release * ( videos provided on my channel )
    1) you cannot use just any micro usb cable to run from your mini console to your computer . Only the NES Classic edition and Super Nintendo Classic edition come with what’s known as “ Data Lined Micro USB Cables “ . So make sure you use a data lined Micro USB cable , preferably the NES / SNES classic cables.
    2) later in this video there was footage of Mario Kart 64 and Mario 64 stuttering / lagging . A lot of that has to do with not overclocking the system / not using the right version of Retro Arch that was suggested within the video . That’s not to say that if you do that that every game is going to run flawlessly , but you would have to really play around with a FTP server within Hakchi to overclock the system from 1.2 GHz to 1.344444….. GHz to get better overall performance for the games on the classic consoles , especially games that require more technical performance. I have a Genesis Mini and Super NES classic edition that’s overclocked with I believe it’s either Retroarch 1.8 Overclock or Retroarch 1.9 Overclock ( the UI background that shows a guy riding a dirt bike ) and they can run Arcade emulators of classic fighting games like Street Fighter Zero 3 , Kings of Fighters 98 and the Original PC version of ultimate doom with the additional Sigil episode with no problems what so ever due to the system being overclocked in tandem with the right overclocked version of Retroarch installed . I mean it’s so cool. For PC Doom on the SNES classic edition you use a Wii Classic controller to use the bumpers for weapon changing and strafing . On the Genesis mini your best beat is to use a PlayStation Classic controller and the Genesis mini will map the PlayStation Classic buttons identical to the SNES Classic edition would with a Wii Classic controller . And when it comes to the fighting games that are the arcade version is , it’s basically like turning these mini consoles into semi mini Sega Saturns / Sega Dreamcasts ( especially the Genesis mini with a 6 button or Retro-Bit 8 Button controller ) 😉
Also there was mention of forcing games that are incompatible with the Canoe emulator into Retroarch / snes9x . The problem with that is , if you get the games working outside of canoe for Super Nintendo , yes there is the potential of more latency but also you loose the ability to do not only save states but more importantly the rewind feature ! Remember ! The Super Nintendo Classic Editions biggest advantage over the NES Classic edition and the Genesis mini was the ability to do rewind of up to 60 seconds for a standard genre game and up to 4 or 5 minutes in a JRPG / RPG. One thing to keep in mind though games that do run on canoe that you save in / can go in rewind if you choose to make many save states they will take up nearly eye to eye the same real estate as the game sitting on the console in itself so be aware of that . Also a game I tested this out on the SNES classic that needed to be patched for Canoe use was Street Fighter Alpha 2. When I applied the patch because it’s a late title special Chip game , it took up the space of 5 Super NES ROMs but can run off of canoe with rewind and save states instead of using Retroarch / snes9x . Ironically though games like PC Doom take up nearly the same amount of space even without the recently added Sigil episode but just the 4 main episodes .
One other customization that was not mentioned by the way in this video was changing the music in the game selection UI . I learned how to do this from a few RUclips videos but you are able to do that was well. First I did the final battle theme from Street Fighter Alpha 3 on my SNES Classic ( which there’s a vid on my channel of that as well as a Bluetooth board mod that takes place in it as well ) and then I made a Super Nintendo Classic Edition modded with extra games and custom music for one of my favorite Hip Hop artists ever , Cormega , as a gift of being a dedicated fan. And everytime he turns that SNES Classic I modded for him on it plays some of his best instrumentals he ever rhymed over. Once again though when you do a mod like that try to make any of the loops anyware from like 20-50 seconds long cuz it equates to like a game and a half to 4 games worth of space for each different background music track you decide to add. There’s many videos and hacking sources out there on the web.
On my channel I have for reference Super Nintendo Classic Edition mod vids both for just standard SNES games only , music / hardware mods for the SNES Classic edition , Sega Genesis Classic overclocked videos , SNES Classic edition overclocked vids , and PlayStation Classic capture which includes PS1 running on a better emulator then the stock one and Dreamcast running on it as well along side with Super NES and Genesis usage on the PS1 Classic too. Thank you and open your eyes to the modding scene of these little things 👍

Actually once you mod your SNES, you CAN return to the home menu without pressing the reset button! When you're in-game, just press down + select, and it'll take you back to the menu. But once again this only works after modding it.

Would adding more games affect the games already on the console, more specifically the save states and/or save data? I have some games with a save state of my favorite levels or part of a game. I’d add just Super Mario All Stars and maybe like 5 more games.

Quick question, after modding the snes classic...how do you properly shut it down? I know that may sound crazy, but I really don't want to corrupt my flash drive by shutting it down the normal way. Should it be shut down through the retroarch software or am I just overanalyzing it and its actually fine to shut down the normal way?

From my limited experience, it depends on the game, and even then it may not run at a consistent frame rate. Lookup "SNES Mini Nintendo 64 Compatibility List - Notes I made on N64 games added to my NES Classic" on Reddit for a much detailed look on each N64 game's performance.

    • @DragoonMS

I mean, even the New 3DS line can just barely run N64 (there's stuff that works, but plenty more that don't) via Daedalus X64, and it can also run PSone pretty well, too (at least, it runs 2D fighters like Marvel vs. Capcom, and 2D platformers like Megaman 8&X4-X6 like a champ)...so this ain't too surprising.
