Compared to a lot of other Gentile (white folk) choirs that I have heard sing this song, this is one of the best I have heard close to the original choir.
No not snapping on the spiritual!!! This isn’t a show choir tune but such a good job from a different culture! ♥️...Also the director could have made them do the movements to help with staying on beat?! 🥴 I hope!? Because I’m sure the slaves weren’t skipping around in the cotton fields snapping their fingers 🙄
I se what they tried to do, but as a person who performed this song, I feel like the execution wasn’t the best. But if you listen to the actual singing, it’s pretty good!
It would have been better if they had just stood still and sang the song. It is inappropriate to snap fingers in a sacred Negro Spiritual, such as this. It is nice that many individuals and choirs have chosen this genre of music as they seek to expand their repertoire. It is also important to undrstand proper song etiquette. How often have you seen or heard finger snapping during Ave Maria? Out of order! SMH
Ave Maria is not anywhere near the same genre as this piece. Snapping in gospel music is EXTREMELY common. This is one of the best renditions of this piece that I have seen on RUclips. The clearly were invested in this song, unlike so many. Yes, they are clearly not native English speakers, so there is some unusual vowel formation. Otherwise, it was great. I only wish the recording did it better justice.
The phrasing is odd and the choreography is awful. Spirituals are not meant to be performed with choreography. They should be sung with conviction and this sounds very amateur. The choir also has very poor vowel shape. Not a good performance.
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! The vowels and consonants are wrong, they have inverted the chords in a weird way (so the notes are wrong), and they're snapping. THEY ARE SNAPPING!!!! That's full-on choreography. What an abomination.....BTW, I sang for Moses Hogan in the studio and on tour so I know what I'm talking about! Do not come for me.
drilladise The finger snapping ruins the piece! I just sang this piece for our past concert and this is just awful. Very poor balance and vowel shape. The choreography is also ridiculous.
An interesting piano and forte playing. But what exactly was so bad? They sang clearly smooth and with a slighly groove. Not every foreigner need to sing it in the traditional way like any colored US citizens can sing it... Europe or asian guys simply don't have the feeling for that. We simply dont have that much soul ^^. So they interpreted it in their own way. I liked it.
I respect your opinion musically and your correct that music is up to the interpretation of the conductor or teacher. However, the term colored may not be the best term to use in 2018. Have a good day.
This could have been so powerful if this ensemble understood the assignment!
The conductor's energy is contagious. The choreography was a little much for my taste but I never knock youth when they are singing about the Lord.
Welcome! Can't tell where you are from...but great job! Blessings!

Right! This is the first video I've ever disliked on RUclips.

They were obviously invested in the piece. There is nothing worse than bland Gospel music.
