Rick Beato just released on his channel a 3 yr old video he took of you at NAM, I think he said. It was amazing. He criticised Rolling Stone for leaving you off the top 250 list. I couldn't agree more. ❤
Frank, I feel like I've known you for years, you were the first phenomenal "outside" player who to me, broke new ground a long while ago! Yes you still blow my mind!
I also loved when you're using in the past the FG Signature Yamaha, Marshall JMP-1, 1000 watts power amp, TC electronic and Marshall cab...one of the tones I liked so much (also ANY tone from Frank is unique anyway!! ;-)
I met Frank at Mumbai airport in 2015. He was ahead of me in the security line and the folks were giving him a tough time asking him to open out his guitar gig bag and asked him to show the guitar, turn it around etc. etc. I knew who Frank Gambale was. And I had seen him with Chick Corea playing in a Japanese Sushi Bar in Oakland here a few years back. I just walked and went ahead and told the security - यह सज्जन बहुत ही मशहूर Guitarist हाँ। मैं इन्हें बहुत अच्छी तरह के जानता हूँ। इन्हें please जाने दीजिए। The security guy looked at me with a “Who the fuck are you” expression. I just maintained my straight face. Then a few people later I crossed security. And lo and behold. Frank was actually waiting for me after security. He was very thankful for my intervention. I told him you are a guitar god to many of us and I told him I saw him with Chick Corea. We fondly remembered that show. We were on the same Korean Air flight to Seoul. I was heading back to SF. He was going to Japan to play a concert. We said goodbye in Seoul.
This was the era (Yamaha era) of Gambales playing that got 14 year old metal head me into fusion and jazz. I was already into "shredding" and was technically proficient. When I heard Frank it was the first time since I first picked up the guitar that I had no fucking clue what he was doing. I thought I had sweep picking down because I could play a couple Yngwie tunes. 🤣🤣🤣 Turns out, I was completely wrong.
Remember watxhing the full "Concert with Class" back in the day, Frank excellent as always. My fave FG song is Katahdin, I wish there was a live version somewhere. I'd say Katahdin is FG's most sophisticated playing. That whole record actually...
