there's something so heartbreaking about Gin just breaking down and crying. Like since when did a show about people having orgasms from eating food deserve such genuine characters and real ass development for them.
Dude Soup Especially when he becomes the manliest man, and also voiced Dio from JoJo. To see him cry makes it soul crushingly awful
Saiba and Gin were best friends , as if they were brothers-in-law. It makes sense for Gin to break to tears.
All Shipper I’m not saying it’s weird in a bad way, I’m saying I didn’t sign up for a genuine feels trip when I started watching a show about people having orgasms from eating food
@@jgilly223 It's Shounen genre drama and "feels" should've been expected before watching.
It’s still trash to me and will always be trash in my eyes at least that’s what I think.
This is one of the saddest moments in the entire show. The perfect picture of the realities of burnout.
Something like this is totally realistic. Your peers or family forcing you to keep improving to the point where you just want to stop.
JTJWarrior Gamz True.
My life
JTJWarrior Gamz i agree setting ones goals and improving them are a good idea but when others benefit from said goals instead of the one who set them then it takes out all the spirit behind it. Not everyone dreams of becoming a world class chef and even for those who do they do it because they enjoy it and the freedom that comes with it. They shouldn’t be forced to conform to the standards of others. This is why i dislike high end society.
@@Blackmegagun I feel you
Mine.
Senzaemon really went ahead and told Jouichiro to take a break and go on vacation. Burnout isn't something a lot of people see because they will always put the product before the person. Jouichiro went in with a passion for cooking, but people kept putting heavy expectations on his shoulders. He just wanted his cooking to be acknowledged and feel validated, but people kept asking for more. I feel like this whole situation is relatable towards anyone who makes content, not just cooking.
Burnout is the biggest fear in many career fields. People lose their motivation and determination to continue. It's why you'll see the struggles of teaching in the US. Some don't work together and are thus swallowed up by the storm and lose their drive before they survive their first 5 years.
@@XTheCrystalBeastGuyX I know I may sound insensitive, but if you truly enjoy what you're doing, why does burnout become a factor? Yes people do put their expectations on you, but in the end, you keep delivering just like Joichiro did.
Is it the pressure of not failing? The fear that one tiny slip up will cause your reputation to plummet like a stone in water?
This whole episode was insanely beautiful and heartbreaking. It really does focus on the whole premise of how Soma's character is as well. The only difference is that Saiba's talent and confidence made others fear him while Soma's talent and confidence made them hate him. It shows the similarities of how their peers won't admit to taking the extra step to compete with them on their level and intensity. Saiba's downfall was a product of those who cannot fathom human error and simply wrote him off as an effortless genius rather than a chef who had worked really hard to hone his skills. It really shows the advantage of how Soma does not fear ridiculed statements or challenges because he believes that he can continue to create something great. He has the will power to not let others sway his style of cooking. Saiba must of have been so relieved to see that drive in his kid because he wasn't able to do so.
which episode is that ? can't find it
Yeah, people are pretty selfish like that. They wanted so badly to write off his accomplishments as just natural talent. They don't care about the hard work he put in. Not even for one minute. And they certainly don't care how much he was suffering either. All they care about is results, nothing more. So who can blame him for getting exhausted from it all?
Soma was quite lucky to have someone like Erina there though, she's been a goal of his since he joined Totsuki, that helped him in not stopping to improve himself i think
Nick you’re right
there was also how Isshiki mentions it to Eizan in the Autumn Election Finals, where he speaks about why the students still keep insulting Soma and writting him off on dumb luck or stuff even when at that point he had beaten Alice and Mimasaka as well as tying with Kurokiba and causing the judges to go on a big discussion over his scoring during the prelims, that is the way they preserve their own egos and their broken crystal like pride, as admitting Soma is a good chef would mean they arent putting enough effort into it
bro saiba is the true king of this series
he was 2nd seat but gin said he literally was better than him but he just didnt want the first seat because its too much work
until season 5 :(
akaLog dont worry soma beats saiba 3-0
They really should give Saiba at least one season revolved around him. Like his journey and how he met Somas mom. How his journey went from being depressed to being back into cooking.
Everyone is talking about how sad this is, and I'm still wondering why Erina's grandfather looks the exact same. Sure, he still may be old, but it was like 20 years ago so shouldn't he look a bit different.
Magical Girl fitness
Magical Girl lol you do know old people in Japan live longer I’m sure they got the idea from that
hezer marquez So what, old people look the exact same after 20-30 years? Sure, they may live longer, but shouldn't the look remotely different?
Fumio too
Vamsi Pyla well it could be a design used in anime, the master in Kenichi looks the same in flashbacks too
thank goodness he found his wife and was officially saved, and even after she passed, he almost fell into this again but was saved by soma.
This is not only a massive moment for Joichiro, but unironically one for Souma. It truly highlights the difference between Joichiro and Souma, Joichiro has so much talent that nobody (yes including Souma) could never compare. But he didn’t have a purpose or a goal. Souma has no talent but he cooks because he wants to find someone special to drive his culinary skills beyond his fathers. Switch their positions, Souma would thrive and Joichiro would fail.
Something like this also happened to me. Back when I was 6 I played the Violin for over 20 years. During that time when I was in middle school I joined the advanced orchestra at a community college and it was fun. I had to work hard for it with constant practice and my parents constantly telling me to get into it being it's a huge thing at my age. But when I got to High School, I left the CC orchestra to later on join my HS advanced Orchestra and I managed to get in. Overtime during HS I was constantly being told to do this to do that with set goals being made from my parents. I got tired too the point I just stopped too where I didn't want to attend events or go to my music class. I went to get some help from my counselors to where she advised me to take a break and just reestablish myself on what I wanted to do. So I did just that and I took a break playing music for a year at the same time gave me a chance to do things on my own. I ended going to the college I wanted then after that I ended up being a freelancer and a tutor.

Wut

Very nice history!
That's just the way most parents are. And then when you wanna stop and take a break, they wanna get mad and villainize you for it, while completely refusing to acknowledge that *THEY* are the reason for you burning out in the first place.
Honestly, it's kind of unsettling (in a "good" way) how Saiba initially responds to Gin mentioning BLUE, but then actually acknowledges Gin like he didn't even know who he was at first. It shows how drowned he feels by all this.
This happened to me when I started medical school. I worked so hard to get to one place, and once I was there I lost all my will to move forward. Took a leave of absence and haven’t looked at medicine for awhile. I start again this fall. Moral of the story, take all the time you need to get to where you want to go. It definitely will teach you other things about yourself.
Me too, but with math. Failed my first year at uni because I was so burnt out (was the first time I’ve ever failed at something academically). I didn’t get any time to leave math or take a break as I had to spend a year revising for resits. Just had to keep pushing myself. In my last year now and I’m still burnt out, but I’m mentally stronger now and better at dealing with it.
Just remembered this randomly and gotta say that it still hits like a truck. After everything Saiba went through, he was just a light-hearted kid that left his best friends with a "sorry!" as his last words, even though he had suffered in silence for so long... This is heartbreaking and what's worse, realistic, I can totally see this happening, a genius' curse can be really strong.
Now I see what my college counselor ment when she told me to leave everything/the city and venture out on my own for a while. I too have been swallowed by the storm, not seeing where I'm going because I was just fulfilling others high expectations of me.. and just... burnt out.
Where did you get money to venture what the world has to offer because I want to do the same because I don’t know what to do in life and I need to leave the city and find myself
Hope yukihira never ends up like this
I don't think so. It was just Saiba felt no one saw the true value of his cooking. As a scene sometime before this showed, the rich people didn't care about his methodology, just the result
Just Some Guy With A Ultra Instinct Mustache Its actually the reason why we got saiba back story, although soma is not his level in cooking but unlike saiba soma still continue the battle until he figured what to do, which was why saiba said that his son is better than him in that aspect . that story is a great character development not only for joichiro but also for soma
That would never happen to Soma, even Saiba at the end of that episode knew that if Soma were in his situation he would’ve thrived on it because he loves walls it gives him a challenge to overcome, that’s just Soma’s personality.
Isidro Pizano exactly that's the difference between these 2 we're saiba failed, soma won't which is the reason why soma will succeed completely, although saiba is happy with how things turn out though he got to meet soma's mother and have a kid which is soma himself an that aspect saiba can be proud of how his son yurn out but a great story though
Alex Tyrantrex what happens when there is no challenges left
Poor Saiba.
Dejay Page i feel his pain
Gin's face was so cute while crying...
Cry baby, cry...
Fr
Peer pressure at it's finest. The more you do things you enjoy and keep on succeeding, the more people don't understand how hard you tried to be where you are. Expectations pretty much crushed him.
The body and mind have their limits. You can't just keep pushing and straining yourself without proper time to rest, it's only going to lead to pain and misery in the long run. But in some cases, circumstance just flat out will not allow you to take a break, as I recently found out the hard way not that long ago. It's not to complain, I'm just saying I relate to this guy.
Same, college for me felt exactly like that. Knowing you needed rest, but could not afford to because of the constant fear of failure.
@@Haseo123653 AND the very fact that your family members are just flat out not going to let you rest. It's true what they say, sometimes parents really *DON'T* understand (and never will, either).
I get burned out from video games and get upset about it as I tend to love the games I get burned out on. I can only IMAGINE how upsetting it is when the thing you're burned out on is your entire favorite hobby, your goal, AND you wanted career.
I don't think it was just the pressure of continuing to improve . I think it was that everyone else decided that he'll do it alone. I'm sure if Gin or Asahi improved at a quick enough rate, Saiba wouldn't have lost to the storm. He felt abandoned and didn't know how to express it because he didn't understand that that was what was happening to him.
Well its was not the pressure
But as you said having no one besides him
And at the same time having no one seeing his effort and time he put into it
Saiba being the person who lok ves cooking for people felt like nobody cared about it
But about the result and him being at the forefront
This is what happens when people excuse hard work as natural talent
This is what happens when people refuse to admit they're not working as hard as they could
As someone who is near the age of these characters, I have no passion in the same way cooking is for Soma and co.
The only time I could say that I go all out is when I cannot comprehend the work or when I'm in a massive rush. Besides that I rarely feel like what would be called hard work. Depending on what it is I do get called "genius" or "stupid".
The best way I can put it is that my body is in a form of Taoism unless it is impossible to do so and I then crumple.
this hurt so much man i cried like a baby watching this for the first time because i have seen this happen to someone i new very well who was really good at piano but then got cought in the storm and burned out and it hurt to see her like that like she didnt know what happiness was
This actually made me cry since I went through something similar. Cooking and striving to go to the top. I lost myself, my family, my friends and my love. I was only focused on being the best. And ended up losing almost everything and losing myself to the bottle. But now after realizing that there's more it's actually better to limit your desire and not let it consume you.
and then soma was born. he was like if you are in my position you wont probably stop and just keep going.
Having a talent is not a responsability, just the opportunity to make great things, but it's on your choice to do those great things or don't do them, after all, all human beings are born being free.
When you’re so good, it stops being fun
Dio crying. . I mean Gin crying got to me.
Senzaemon's saying is true. They show it many times in this series and Joichiro is jsut one of them. Too great a talent will backfire.
it feels weird seeing gin cry knowing that his voice is the same as DIO's

Azami Nakamura: MARBLES HURT MY SAIBA JOUCHIRO.
Who would have thought that a few years later the man gets his groove back?
Man, when I first watched this scene, it was good but not crazy emotional. But watching it after having problems with anxiety, it really hits home
His back story was so cool 💜
Did they cut the part where Saiba cut his broken leg to keep going on "in through the storm"? It gave a more heartbreaking impact on this scene...
Jojo M yea I think they took it out of the anime but you’re right it is originally in the manga. But I think even in the manga part of that scene is darkened so you see the silhouette of him doing it but not a bunch of blood and bone
Dojima would then use those words with Hayama. Although, when he said it, I'm sure he meant it as a way to deal with burnout, and not becoming a supervillain...
He was suffocating and felt that he was inside on a gage. That's why he left to see the world and be free.
Its a late response to this but i felt like the the visual arts world..my family is indigenous designers, carvers, painters etc. The thing is i love animation and visual arts so much its hard to do my own thing when my familt backlash or tell me to get into traditional design when my own ideas is so abstract or wild that its not into indigenous medium...long tangent but its how i felt for years and was depressed for 3 hears because of this conflict. Im slowly getting over it and my desire to draw again.
This is the best series I have ever seen
I remember tearing up when I first watched this episode.... oh, look, I'm tearing up right now.
Doesn't this kind of feel like the problem with chef Shinomiya's stagnation but to the higher even more difficult extremes?
You're right ! That's probably the reason why Gin Dojima knew about Shinomiya ! :o
Gin saw it happen to Saiba so he feared that Shinomiya would have the same fate as well
I think Shinomiya's issue was different actually. This story is about people writing off hard work as natural talent, thus crushing that individual to keep pushing for greater heights even though they're already working hard to be where they are. In Shinomiya's case, he already achieved a great dream of his, receiving that award, so his issue was feeling disappointed with himself for not having another dream to reach for. Deciding to go for a star or more gave him renewed purpose to go on with.
Joichiro Saiba's past reminds me of the generation of miracles from Kuroko no basket

My boy joichiro is best boi
Yeah he got burnout
I didn't realize how weird it is that Saiba's boy voice is his adult voice until now. His voice is so deep.

The scene were they showed him in the wasteland with a bad foot, in the manga his leg is completely broken, bone sticking out and everything.
The bone snapped out of his leg sticking it out, and then his leg from where the bone snapped and stuck out was ripped off. you can see the imagery that he's lost half his leg

DOJIMA GIN!!!
This sort of thing is why Totsuki and the mindset it drives promotes a toxic environment, to me. Sure you get amazing at cooking but your sense of self-worth and your social life is utterly shattered.
The sad thing is that the competitive nature of Totsuki is what is allowing them to have so many successful graduates as it is simulating what they will deal with in their real life careers as chefs. The culinary arts are very brutal with the amount of work and hours that are demanded of them and how easily they can be replaced.
Better to learn that truth through school where you can retry again than fired in real life and struggling to pay the bills.
Considering the end of the main story, I like how this is Foreshadowing the fact that God's Tongue is in fact a curse.
Have you seen the manga? Its worst.

I cant understand his ptoblem tbh like what
Anukul Sommer let me try to explain as much as I can , he felt no one really understand his way of cooking , the only admired him or fear him because of that no one really bother trying to get better than him plus whatever he hsd made at that was always good for everyone . because of that he couldn't perfect anything since no one found a flaw in his cooking nor bother to even look for a flaw so he couldn't enjoy his way of cooking, because of that he loss his will and reason to be a great chef, take for example soma although he face his father everytime he didn't back down but was more excited to fight his father again so that he could get better which made joichiro think that his son is better than him cause no matter how hard things get he'll continue to fight and get back up to find a solution , which joichiro couldn't find back then which result of him not graduating in totsuki until he met soma's mother he was a empty chef and man. sorry for the long post this should more or less explains I hope
