For people considering to buy this model. I repadded and repasted with liquid metal my aw 17 r4. I get idle 60c and max 70c when running any game. I followed iunlock’s guide on reddit and a youtube video. First time unassembling an electronic ever and took me 6hrs, a rather enjoyable experience actually. Experienced people should be able to get it done in less than 2hrs since I feel like if I were to unassemble again, it would probably take me 40 mins since I know what I’m doing. @@SERGE_Tech Glad you are doing better. Suffer from depression as well and I ended up ordering the Alienware M17 laptop only to have one of the speakers crackle and then ordered a refurbished R5 with a GTX 1070, but HP ended up offering the Omen 17 with 4k screen at that time with the RTX 2080 and ended up getting that instead. I don't really play shooter games, so 60 FPS isn't really a big deal to me. Omen 17 has been great and from a price point was saving almost $1500 with a longer warranty.

Amazing video!!!! I never see before a complete noise test, heat test and upgrade tutorial in thr same video for the alienware notebook. Thanks for explanation. I think buy one in a next few months

I bought the Alienware 17 R4 with the 1070 and 6 months in it started making a loud noise. I had to beg Best Buy to take it back. They exchanged me with a 1080 as long as I paid the difference in price between 1070 and 1080. I made the call and did the exchange thinking I got a faulty Alienware. I took my new Alienware with the 1080 home and played it but a week later one of the cores hit 99 C(intel 7700k). Alienware told me its technically not overheating because the package temp was not 99. I thought this was BS, so I refunded my 2800 Alienware R4 and bought an Ibuypower Snowblind for 1899 with a GTX 1080 ti. That's right! I saved damn near 1000 and got a better computer. I have had the snowblind for about 4 months and I have yet to see the CPU(intel 8700k) go over 80C. Long story short, I'd think twice about buying an Alienware 17 for those who are looking. They are expensive!
dont know what you were expecting. Like, i have a msi gl62m with i7 7700hq and gtx 1050ti. My 7700hq ALWAYS overheatup to 95c. And consider that i have it paired with a gtx 1050ti. Its just, theyr hot as the desktop counterpart. i7 7700x are all so goddam hot.
Al vi K Wow thats crazy. I expected to get what I paid for. I refuse to buy a 2800 dollar computer and the temperatures are 99 C. However, I have heard the 7700’s run on the hotter side. Thanks man appreciate it!
The thing is, thats just too much for a portable device in my opnion. If i have to spend 3k for a notebook, i would rather go alienware 15 with i7 + 1050ti + alienware amp than 1080 max-q. Theres no point on putting a 1070-performance 1080 inside of it if you can put it outside (and its pretty cheap tbh). And, also, you have upgradeability and your future proof.

how long ago did you buy it? maybe you can do an exchange or a return? also keep in mind even models that are 4 years old still perform decent so depends on what you bought? what are the specs of the item you bought?
I just got the 15 R4 for 1100 bucks on clearance and I haven’t had the CPU go over 67 degrees and the GeForce over 47 degrees yet ... I was worried cuz ppl said it overheats easily but I’m enjoying it
@@SERGE_Tech I 'm talking about the slot labeled SSD-1. It's for a NVMe 2242, I think. My 17R5 has one. It is below the fan on the left and next to slot labeled SSD-2.
XTU analysis: After gaming for 4 hours in RUST US WEST Facepunch 1 the GPU is at 58-61C The CPU is about 68-75C in about 1 hour of gaming and checking intel extreme tuning utility XTU reported 4 instances that lasted about 1 half a second of power limit throttling, However no thermal throttling. odd because I had a few thermal throttling drops that did not affect the game my first day but it seems like the cooling is breaking in the paste maybe? im not sure how to explain in only that the performance seems to be even better. the core voltage jumps up and down between 1.258v down to 1.107 continuously. Core TDP 25watt to 34watt CPU ghz 3.8 to 3.1

I’m really sorry to hear that something like that happened to you but I’m very glad at the same time that you’re ok now! Thanks for the reply. However, this computer was little bit out of my budget but I think this computer is just perfect for a lot of things like gaming and more. Instead, I bought MSI gl63 which has i7 intel core Nvdia gtx1050ti I love the computer especially the option that is given to its users to be able to upgrade it but the material of the laptop holds a lot of fingerprints and it is very sensitive so if you drop it too bad but overall it is doing just fine! And I bought it for $950!
I bought the same laptop as you today at Best Buy. Only difference is mine has a GTX 1070 8GB card. They had it 200 off and I paid 1600. I have heard that many people under volt the CPU and GPU. That you can do this without any risk of damaging your laptop. The benefit of this is that under volting will yield better performance because you will generate less heat and prevent the laptop from ever throttling. Have you tried doing this on your laptop? Also is there a way to adjust the fan speed so I can set it to 100% while gaming? Have you ever tried an external GPU before? My plan is to buy the top of the line Geforce card when they release the next generation cards later this year and use it as an external card for 4k HDR gaming. Do you know how well external GPU's work and do they perform as good as a card plugged directly into a PCIE 16x 3.0 slot on a motherboard?
Very impressed with the performance. I wonder if the firmware is tweaking the cooling dynamically since it seems to be doing a better job. Would be nice to have a statement from alienware/dell it self.
People keep saying this is expensive. It’s not really. Laptops have a premium anyway. You can get a mid range gaming with a 1050ti pc at the cost of a low end laptop with a 1030 performance. So even tho your paying top dollar for 1080 and i9. It is expensive to me but if you go i7 and 1070 at around 1800. It’s quite reasonable even tho a desktop you’d get a 1080 ti. But remember laptop comes with screen and mobility convenience which is the premium your also paying for

Just curious, If you had a choice between this Alienware 17 R5 2018 and a GP63 Leopard VR Ready Gaming Laptop which would you choose? Love your videos. Keep up the Great work!
I may have missed it but you did not talk about the small "SSD-1" slot next to the PCIE slot. Is that another spot for a smaller m.2? It looks too small.
Best 17 inch/15 gaming laptop according to you? Requirements: Good build quality, good screen with 4k/ 144hz display options Excellent performance Good keyboard feel
AndreasH900 why should u even buy a big gaming laptop n the first place, just build a pc that has a fucking 1080 ti in it lol. That’s what I did then brought the Microsoft surface book 2 with a gtx 1060 in it that’s more powerful then the Alienware laptop not only it can all so be a hand held tablet. Reason I say it’s more powerful is the fact the Microsoft surface book 2 has a OC 1060 with i7 8750CK 4.8ghz with 32gb ram and a amazing 17 hour battery life and 6 hour battery life playing AAA games non stop
Awesome bro! My opinion like theres no point of having a 5.2 KG (Estimate) laptop where you could get something like the surface book 2 with a Overclocked or Overclockable GTX 1060 because thermals are good.
You mentioned 4 drives but didn't elaborates . . . Max capacity per drive is what? And I'm guessing where you installed the 960 evo, next to it was a 2242 slot - is that the 4th?
just to let you know.. on some sales pitch with this laptop... it claims it has touch screen.. even the sales guy demonstrated it did on video.. but it does not have it.. plus.. when i tried getting information online with dell.. the operator barely spoke english.. when i tried to call back.. i got the round around with their speech operator then was put on hold for almost 20 mins when i finally hung up.. i was looking to make a purchase of this.. but if i had problems afterwards.. good luck on getting service online.. dells online or phone service is the worse.. so be sure to check this out ahead of time just incase..
Debating between this (with GTX 1070) or going a different route with the Asus GM501 Zephyrus M. Concern is over heat and noise between the two. Thoughts?
Patrick Scott i own a 17 with a 1070. Temps arent too bad. The laptop is very thick and heavy so they can fit in a good deal of cooling. I have no personal experience with the zephyrus but what i can tell you is that it is extremely thin in comparison. Its about an inch shorter too i believe. The bottom of the asus does open up letting your hardware breathe more when you open the laptop itself up. My alienwares noise is pretty quiet when not under load and perfectly acceptable when under load. Hope i have been of some help.
Patrick Scott I believe we have the same config then. I7 8750h, 1070, and the 120hz 1440p display. It is an excellent TN panel and i havent had to replace anything yet but i will probably do a liquid metal repaste just to keep temps down a bit more
Great review, thx. I have a vip question. Today I ordered a mid priced unit. I am a beginning photographer and bought this solely for photo and video editing, not gaming. I splurged and ordered the 4K display. A few minutes ago I watched a Laptop magazine video review of the R5 and I THINK, but am not 100% certain, that one of the reviewers said that a 4K display is overkill and that a 1080 would suffice. Do you agree? It will save me over $300! Fingers crossed that you receive this message stat. Thank you! /Rebecca
Quick question: I see some reviewers mention to get the 120Hz model if you are a hard core gamer. Is that 120Hz the screen frequency only? E.g. I'm considering getting one of these for work, and plugging in a 42" monitor/screen. Will a GTX 1060 drive a screen that large without any noticeable tearing? Or would I need to get the 1070 to run at 120Hz?

I'm trying to understand how you got the black chassis... All I see online is Silver regardless, unless this model is the FHD and not Q or UHD. The silver is horrible.
Hello! I am debating between this one (8th Gen 17 8750H 1070 version) and the MSI GS65 15: 144hz monitor and would like your input. How is the screen on this one in terms of brightness, color representation, etc. Whites being white, blacks being black and how vivid does it look? Thank you in advance for any input you may give me!
Hey Serge I have a question: I just ordered my Alienware 17 and it brings the 1TB hdd+128gb ssd. Can I swap the 1TB for a Baracuda 1TB hdd/ssd ?(hybrid) or should I leave the 1TB hdd it brings? Hope to here from you soon. Should be getting my laptop soon. Oh one other thing, if I can put on my baracuda hybrid drive, should I put it the laptop before I boot it for the first time? Thanks!
1st time so this video it’s was awesome but i have question i also own 17 R5 & is the NvME plug & play for 17 R5 or still i have to change something in the system totally noob here! Hope you reply tnx bro... already subscribe 👍
Hi Serge, I bought the 15r4 with the 8950HK and 1080GTX and Im experiencing high temp spikes in the upper 90s out of the box. I asked for a replacement and the second one showed similar performance. I have heard that 8th gen processors run very hot but im not sure if I should return this machine or try to undervolt and probably change thermal pasting instead as this is an issue im gonna see in most laptops with these specs.
Hi Serge. Can you tell me is there a big difference between a gtx1080 and agtx1070. I will be getting one of these laptops to use Autocad and revit. Thanks m8.
How is your hp Omen 15 doing? Bought after watching your review but having frame drops due to heating and sometimes plugged in not charging while gaming??
lokesh rai honestly man frame drops are a normal thing on a laptop almost every laptop I have had has some kind of frame drop. But here’s the answer. Sometimes manufacturers put horrible paste on the processors so if you do a processor repaste it will help solve some if not all heating issues. Basically it entails dismantling the laptop and applying a type of gell to cool it better. I did it recently on a 13” Alienware and it helped greatly by reducing temps around 20c
Thnx for rplyng man... In my case, in India hp is quite a named brand & I payed some extra bucks for the same but getting to this kind of performance made me a little disheartened. That is why I asked you about your hp pc, since I bought the same base model.
Hi Serge. i used a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse and a wireless headset. AND also use the oculus rift for movie and game from time to time. Now the problem is the USB port limitation on this laptop. i have a cheat Usb hut that sometimes its work and sometimes it doesn't... Any advice on what USB port that works really good on this alienware 17 laptop. thanks.
well they should all be good but sometimes usb ports can die out. I have had this happen on half of my systems. I'm not sure why they suck so much. If your gonna use a hub, try this one out: amzn.to/35fQ0dg 40% off discount code DKQG6L4Z Also make sure you use a hub thats connecting to the usb C/thunderbolt port. Can you link me what hub you are using?
Smaller bezel means the smaller case, means less space for hardware which means higher temperatures, ultimately reducing the longevity of the components. They could've fitted a larger screen which means a more expensive device. People whine about the dumbest details.
Adolf Hitler - The Aorus X9 is superior to this in everyway, it has the same CPU and GPU, much larger SSD, much better screen, more ports, and... what's that? It's thinner and lighter, and has smaller bezels? AND is the same price?!
3 years ago i did a 2014 macbook vs 2015 macbook video while also doing fitness videos the tech video perfromed better so i switched to tech and i always liked laptops so i continued on to refine the formula
I'm considering buying this laptop for gaming and online teaching. I work as an online teacher, so I'm wondering if the fan will make a lot of noise while I am teaching and not gaming?
It shouldn’t make too much noise while teaching and this can even be adjusted if it becomes an issue. Feel free to reach out if it ever becomes an issue.
Great video man! Im waiting for my laptop in the mail at the moment. I bought a 1070 gtx with a 1080p screen. Do you think 1080 is a big difference from 4k? I bought 1080p because better battery life and its cheaper. How do you think cs go will look on 1080p screen?
the 1080 and both 1070 do have 8gb of vram so in theory they both can run in 4k but on the most demanding games a 1080 may help it has more cores and stronger mem mhz take a look at this example here ruclips.net/video/HUW7YnwfzGs/видео.html
thermal Throttling? still? bet bad thermal paste again. my 15 R3 went down from avarage 95C to 78C from just changing the paste to Gelid Ex. Dell must sort this out ,using graphite thermal pads or similar.

Glad to see you got the i7 instead of the i9
Dude I thought you went into witness protection, good to see your back keep it up bro. RUclips needs uou
I also thought I went into some kind of protection mode as well. Long story short I gave up for a little while because my life got kinda crazy.
To remove power limits, change out the 240w PSU for the 330w PSU. It'll stop power-throttling.
Will it work with the r4 too?
@@s1gnex yes

@@SERGE_Tech Glad you are doing better. Suffer from depression as well and I ended up ordering the Alienware M17 laptop only to have one of the speakers crackle and then ordered a refurbished R5 with a GTX 1070, but HP ended up offering the Omen 17 with 4k screen at that time with the RTX 2080 and ended up getting that instead. I don't really play shooter games, so 60 FPS isn't really a big deal to me. Omen 17 has been great and from a price point was saving almost $1500 with a longer warranty.
It's so easy now to upgrade the laptop (not as customisable as a PC, indeed, however it's good to know options are there)
Have you seen the area 51 it even allows you to upgrade gpu and cpu, and these are both desktop class not mobile bs, take a look heres a link:

thank you so much for showcasing some RUST gameplay lol. It looks like a low pixelated simple game but not many computers can run it at great settings! Thanks for the review youve earned my sub well done.
Amazing video!!!! I never see before a complete noise test, heat test and upgrade tutorial in thr same video for the alienware notebook. Thanks for explanation. I think buy one in a next few months

@SERGE... now that you've had it and ran it for several months a RE-review and up date on any pros and cons specific any encountered issues and resolves would be awesome....
Have you considered buying the 330w PSU to replace the included 240w PSU? The extra heading should help reduce power limitations
welcome back man, keep making videos!
Thanks! Hope I don’t stop again. Making videos stresses me out so much sometimes that I need a break i also had some interesting life events which I’ll probably talk about in my next update video.
Keep up the reviews

Al vi K Couldn’t agree more man. Exactly!
Amaze Productions i repadded and repasted with liquid metal my aw 17 r4. I get idle 60c and max 70c. I am happy :)
Amazing video loved it to bits

I JUST BOUGHT THE OLD MODEL FUDGE MY LIFE AND NOW THEY COME OUT WITH THIS
how long ago did you buy it? maybe you can do an exchange or a return? also keep in mind even models that are 4 years old still perform decent so depends on what you bought?
what are the specs of the item you bought?
I just got the 15 R4 for 1100 bucks on clearance and I haven’t had the CPU go over 67 degrees and the GeForce over 47 degrees yet ... I was worried cuz ppl said it overheats easily but I’m enjoying it
Nobody talks about the SSD-1 slot. It's hard to find an NVMe 2242. I love my 17R5!
do you mean the sata slot? or what do you mean?
@@SERGE_Tech I 'm talking about the slot labeled SSD-1. It's for a NVMe 2242, I think. My 17R5 has one. It is below the fan on the left and next to slot labeled SSD-2.
I'm not even here cause I'm interested in the AW17. Am very happy with my AW13R3. Love the small size, steel reinforcement, etc.
XTU analysis:
After gaming for 4 hours in RUST US WEST Facepunch 1
the GPU is at 58-61C
The CPU is about 68-75C
in about 1 hour of gaming and checking intel extreme tuning utility XTU reported 4 instances that lasted about 1 half a second of power limit throttling, However no thermal throttling.
odd because I had a few thermal throttling drops that did not affect the game my first day but it seems like the cooling is breaking in the paste maybe? im not sure how to explain in only that the performance seems to be even better.
the core voltage jumps up and down between 1.258v down to 1.107 continuously.
Core TDP 25watt to 34watt
CPU ghz 3.8 to 3.1
I'm continuously stressing the machine and its holding up next up would be to force the gpu and cpu to 100 utilization.
High Serge I just purchased an Alienware 17r5 and bought a Samsung 970 pro to up grade it. I am having problems with compatibility. Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. Love all your tech tips and watching your channel makes me realize I know enough to ask for help. Your review was what made me purchase my 17r5 and try to customize it.

Dang niceeee! That’s a really awesome computer MSI has been doing a real good job lately.
Any backlight bleed?
But remember laptop comes with screen and mobility convenience which is the premium your also paying for
Keep up the good work!👌🏿💯

I actually just applied for Dell credit to buy this machine and was approved. But when I went to build the machine I discovered that there was only 2 USB ports and NO optical drive? Guess I'll wait for R6 and hope that all changes.
Wrong, NVMe drives are about 10 - 20X slower than dram.
Worth it to buy this laptop if going into college for engineering. Primarily CAD work, but also looking for a nice gaming computer
Would you recommend this as a desktop replacement? Or you think any of the other 6 core gaming laptops are more worth of my money. Thanks :)

Just curious, If you had a choice between this Alienware 17 R5 2018 and a GP63 Leopard VR Ready Gaming Laptop which would you choose? Love your videos. Keep up the Great work!
FLATLINERACER definitely alienware 17r5
I may have missed it but you did not talk about the small "SSD-1" slot next to the PCIE slot. Is that another spot for a smaller m.2? It looks too small.
Best 17 inch/15 gaming laptop according to you?
Requirements:
Good build quality, good screen with 4k/ 144hz display options
Excellent performance
Good keyboard feel
Glad you are back, what were you doing all these days?
i love my 15 r4 ! i got the gtx 1060 only because ill buy the graphics amp latter on down the road.
The 1060 is still an amazing card!
Yeah coming from a gtx 780 it’s a lot better
Lmao 1060 on a 15 r4, I would of gotten atleast a 1070 xD
Why does everyone who review the Alienware laptops fail to mention the fact it has no HDD lights?
Just brought the 17 R5, very pleased with it so far.
what do you need the hdd lights for? just wondering?
hows the heat i was thinking of getting it just scared of all these heat issues i mean there from months ago but
SERGE you can tell a lot from the lights, like is a program running or not is something running in the background .
beau ryan No over heating on my laptop which has a GTX 1060 and I7 8750H.
Valuable video

Super glad you like it! I'll always try to make it better as well so if you get any ideas let me know.
SERGE Yes sure!
Older Reviews on Dell's own website mention terrible battery life in these Alienware 17 laptop. I wonder if these bad batterys have been addressed...
Thank you! /Rebecca
How did you manage the 8750 and the 1080? Dell is only allowing me to build the 1080 with the i9.
In the US they only sell i9 + 1080, you can get i7 + 1080 in other coubtries.
Man ur videos are the best. Loved. I'll like to ask you about how once I install a new pci ssd on my laptop I move the OS from the old hdd. Thanks.
Hope you subscribe! I would love to stick around and make more videos!
How much the new Thermal Management has improved from Alienware 17 R4?
Quick question: I see some reviewers mention to get the 120Hz model if you are a hard core gamer. Is that 120Hz the screen frequency only? E.g. I'm considering getting one of these for work, and plugging in a 42" monitor/screen. Will a GTX 1060 drive a screen that large without any noticeable tearing? Or would I need to get the 1070 to run at 120Hz?
All AW 17 with GTX 1080 comes with 330watt AC charger, why did your come with 240watts?
wondering the exact same thing actually.
Because it's a 1070, there's no 1080 in the R5's without getting the I9.
Beautiful review. Thank you.
This laptop also don't have a card reader. I have the R4 model and I love it.
When is this laptop getting a GTX 2070?

@@SERGE_Tech thank you for responding and I am glad to hear you are fine now. I have the R4 and it's beautiful in every semantic.
Could you test the battery life with the new Alienware 17R5 please? Thank you! And I also buy this laptop, but I didn't choose the hdd. I want to add it by myself. But I'm wondering whether the laptop without hdd has hard disk bracket. If it doesn't have. It is a problem for me to add a hdd.
This convinced me to want to buy it more
I'm trying to understand how you got the black chassis... All I see online is Silver regardless, unless this model is the FHD and not Q or UHD. The silver is horrible.
you should've removed battery connector before doing anything like removing or inserting anything in to the laptop
Is it worthy buying a laptop like this for professional using? For example, 3D modeling with revit or solidworks.
in those applications it will run exceptionally well.
good review.
Glad you like it! Let me know if you wanna see anything else?
Where did you find a configuration with the GTX 1080 and 8750h? I thought that 1080 versions only came with the 8950hk.
Very Nice !
Thanks!

Plug in play with most drives. Some drives require you to format them. Give it a shot.
SERGE tnx bro 👍
If your gonna use a hub, try this one out:

Also make sure you use a hub thats connecting to the usb C/thunderbolt port.
Can you link me what hub you are using?
Cool! How can you get the option Core i7 with GTX 1080 SERGE? I didn't see that option on Dell website
I just wish it had slimmer display bazzels like the Gigabyte Aero 15X or the MSI GS65.
Yeah there pretty large bezel although it protects the screen better that way honestly I prefer smaller bezel for more screen ratio.
AND is the same price?!
what are you smoking? non of what you just said is true lol.
Young Kelz - Me or him? Because you could go check the specifications on the Aorus X9 (2018) vs. the Alienware 17 R5, everything I said is factual.
Excellent Excellent review,What inspired you to make review videos On these laptops
3 years ago i did a 2014 macbook vs 2015 macbook video while also doing fitness videos the tech video perfromed better so i switched to tech and i always liked laptops so i continued on to refine the formula
why do you ask?
I'm considering buying this laptop for gaming and online teaching. I work as an online teacher, so I'm wondering if the fan will make a lot of noise while I am teaching and not gaming?
It shouldn’t make too much noise while teaching and this can even be adjusted if it becomes an issue. Feel free to reach out if it ever becomes an issue.
Great video man! Im waiting for my laptop in the mail at the moment. I bought a 1070 gtx with a 1080p screen. Do you think 1080 is a big difference from 4k? I bought 1080p because better battery life and its cheaper. How do you think cs go will look on 1080p screen?
the 1080 and both 1070 do have 8gb of vram so in theory they both can run in 4k but on the most demanding games a 1080 may help it has more cores and stronger mem mhz take a look at this example here ruclips.net/video/HUW7YnwfzGs/видео.html
but you can always adjust games to run better by tweaking settings.
thermal Throttling? still? bet bad thermal paste again. my 15 R3 went down from avarage 95C to 78C from just changing the paste to Gelid Ex. Dell must sort this out ,using graphite thermal pads or similar.
Alot of the game fps are cap and the title blocks the fps. Can u make a specific benchmark video for the laptop?
Which laptop is best video editing and development around $1000. I was looking for MSI GL63(i7-8750h,128GB SSD). Is that good or any better is available??
That's one hell of a review man. Now you get a 15 pounds thumbs up 😌
I fell into a deep depression after I made this review so I never got around to replying to these comments... Did you ever end up getting the Alienware r5? What machine did you get instead if you didn't? Are you still searching for a laptop? I have been doing much better and want to continue making useful tech videos, you need anything, anything at all let me know I would love to make more tech content. If you haven't yet subscribed I would highly encourage you as it will help the channel out greatly. Thanks for commenting :)
