GizmoSlipTech thanks for making this video and yeah I think I still might want an Alienware laptop cause it really cool and it should be just the correct amount of performance I would want in a laptop and it's also not that thin cause idk why but I don't really like having a thin laptop so the Alienware falls in that sweet spot for me personally and once again thanks for making this video

A laptop suck only if it does not do what it say it does. Dont expect a thin & light laptop to do a gaming laptop eventhough same specs. Do I think Alienware is bad? No. But for the money, I would expect Alienware to have better customer service and replacement/ repair plan when manufacturer defect is present.

Well aw 17 i9 is available at 2800 ish at the end of june. And its performance is out of the world. Yes I hate thick chassis and more weight but hey it leads to better thermals across the board. And I would rather spend a couple hundred bucks more rather than buying smaller weaker machines like blade 15 and gs65

    • @T3hSpoon
      @T3hSpoon 6 лет назад

It overheats @ default clock speeds and has no thermal headroom for actual overclocking.
At least with a GS65/Blade15 you are able to run the hardware in them near their potential.

I can not comprehend the insanity of thinness. It's gotten to the point of madness. You want a laptop that is ultra thin, very light, yet powerful, no heating issues, incredible strong with no flexing, and still have the flexibility of interchanging parts. OK, I've got the answer. Build a time machine and go 100 years into the future. While you're there check up on the PS35 and X-Box-23.7 and rumors of the new Sega game system.

GAMERS who think alienware is trash haven't owned one. They hardly thermal throttle and are built like tanks with Kevlar reinforced chassis. They are now realistically priced and are often enough on sale at DELL that you can grab one for a song. Lastly, dell's customer service is WAAYY better than MSI, ASUS or any of the other gaming laptop brands. I'm speaking from experience. Owned a 17 R2, R4. Also owned a Msi and a Predator 17.

Here's my take on owning 3 alienwares and various other gaming laptops in a row.
Currently I own the 15R3 with the 1070GTX OC. It came without thermal issues out of the box but as with all gaming laptops the thermal paste and thermal pads werent great. after rectifying this I got a really quite AW15R3 which runs at 85c max under full load, so GPU and CPU fully loaded at the same time.
It is true the new 15R4 with the i( is problematic but this is not unique to alienware, from what I understood Intel was kinda cosnervative with their specsheet and did not correctly specify the thermal output while these models where developed. This causes ALL i( laptops to thermal throttle, so from the really thick Asus and MSI models to the thinner AW laptops and the ultrathin MSI's AOrus etc laptops. This is all on Intel to blame and just terrible for the industry as a whoile.
In my opinion Alienware offers the best build quality. The Razer blade and Gigabyte laptops are so fragile they can bend in your laptop messenger bag thanks to the soft aluminum they use. An alienware has an aluminum bottom and top, steel motherboard frame, copper & steel keyboard deck with carbon fibre composite rubberized finish etc. It has zero flex and lasts a lifetime and can survive a drop if you are unlucky.
It jsut sucks users have to repaste their laptops themselves to get the most out of it.

  • @arcticfox5118

So i want to add to your review, I have the I7-8750H+1070 17 R5 model with 16 gigs of ddr4 2666 ram.
i agree with most of what you said, however i find my model with the 1070 never really gets much above 75-77C under heavy load. I think that I9 and 1080 is just too much for the cooling in this system to handle without some tweeks.
Another thing i want to point out is that while the base screen is meh the mid range IPS screen is in my opinion the best best of the offerings and while not as pretty as some screens i have used or seen it is still quite nice.
Next as a trucker power is a big concern for me for rather obvious reasons, The 91WH battery is...ok but only provides around an hour to 1.5 hours with the 1070 running depending on load. I have yet to get the damn thing to switch between the intergrated and dedicated like my inspiron does so i have no idea what the battery life would be like under those conditions. However it does pull more power on idle then a standard 12 volt socket can provide and even pulls more while charging then it can provide. It also pops fuses in my 24 volt socket. This has been solved with a direct link to the battery but the laptop pulls more then a 300W inverter can supply. so 120W vehicle outlets are out.
next the heavy construction is one of the first that holds up well to the heavy vibration of a semi, Most laptops i have owned start to show damage either from the mobo literally cracking to the screen enclosure coming loose after just a week or two if the screen is not braced and/or the laptop is under 15 inches and aluminum with well supported guts. this one is strong enough that there is no problem and the thick bezels are in my opinion a huge plus for the stability they provide the screen as most tend to "flop around'.
another huge plus is the ability to run a VM with no issues for college, Its keyboard and mouse are also firm enough that accidental brushes cause no issues but loose enough to rivial a good solid gaming keyboard. Maybe not premo $200 keyboard quality but pretty close.
thems is my 2 cents anyway after 2 months of constant daily use. After using a dozen brands and models of laptop that fail dismally or last less then 6 months i am happy with my 17 R5

I'm watching on my AW15 R4 right now and the only issue I have is that I didn't know that I had a choice with the G-Sync, I don't have optimus now lol
Otherwise it's great, not amazing but 8/10
Keyboard has good actuation and feel, low response times
Lighting is so good in the dark, it isnt distracting at all
There are 4 predefined fan profiles: Performance, Balance, Quiet, Full Speed
I recommend going Performance because when you go for Balance, the fans sometimes just stop blowing when you're idle.
Highest temperature was 92C from the CPU, 90C from the GPU, and that's because the table im on has already gotten hot from 5 hours of continuous "Grid 2" and was just sucking hot air from the vents at that point. But the day before, max was only 75C-80C even with 8 hours of continuous Assassin's Creed 4. Probably because I lowered my settings on AC4 to high and Grid 2 to max, the clock speed on the 1060 changes depending on what you're doing. Idle clock speed is 189mhz
Low-spec games like CSGO or War Thunder on medium settings are gonna get you around 69-80C max.
You're gonna need a big bag though, we got a 15' bag off of amazon because if we purchased a bag to come along with the laptop there was a chance that the bag wasnt gonna be shipped in time(was overseas). The bag was able to contain the laptop but it's a very tight fit.
It's very big because of that back vent but if you get a 17' bag OR the one that Alienware provides instead, i think you'll be fine
The weight is.. actually fine. I'm 19 and this thing doesn't break me any sweat. Although I've yet to bring it to Uni so i dont know about long duration travels. The weight is just fine, not *too* heavy but still not light.
You can just kill all the lights except for the keyboard when you wanna go low-key
I'm happy with it right now and yeah, it's great!

I've got an Alienware 17 R5. It's definitely thicker than a lot of other laptops, but it stays on my desk most of the time. I don't have room for an actual desktop computer, so having the high performance parts in a structure that's still more compact than a desktop is a huge bonus for me. This isn't going to be the case for everyone, of course. As for quality, it has been of the highest quality with no complaints except one. The Killer 1550 wireless network adapter is absolute garbage. I recommend avoiding Killer Wireless products completely.

I own AWR4 17 for almost one year now, and I had to get the entire motherboard replaced due to multiple blue screen messages, and now it runs flawless. IF you buy AW, make sure you buy warranty. Then you should stress test the entire system over and over, and if there's a weak spot, you find it, and get it fixed. Then from time to time, run stress tests. Nothing is perfect, so just be aware of what you buy, and keep up with maintenance. The AW R4 I own is high spec, and it does run into over-heating issues, but I use Intel Tuning Utility to decrease some of the core features to cool down over-heating issues. You can re-paste to help with over-heating issues, but it doesn't 100% get rid of over-heating, it helps by bringing it down by 15-20%. Check out online Forums. Alienware products depend on how deep your pockets are. Just like with anything expensive. Make sure you can afford it, and the problems. No product in this world is problem-free, and even if it is, it's up until a certain time period. Just be ready $_$

BTW, since you talk so much trash what is your set up because I also have my custom desktop sporting the Intel 9980XE. I've had 2 Alienware laptops. I will never go back because of Dells propriety drivers. I had one of the smaller Alienware laptops, I think 13 inchs and the only video drivers I could get for it were through the Dell website, problem was, they stopped updating their drivers for well over 2 years for the particular model and NVIDIA drivers downloaded from the NVIDIA site would not work. There was a workaround using third-party software and modifying the updated drivers so that it would work but that in itself is completely unacceptable. Forcing you to use drivers that they put out and then to stop updating because, quite frankly they don't care, is a no brainier for me. Never again.

Yes 4 times and they never resolved the issue. They just kept replacing the mother board. And I kept arguing with them how it wasn’t a mother board issue. Then they sent me a brand new one, no difference. I gave up and just sold it on eBay. I loved the laptop, don’t get me wrong, but the constant issue of 100 degrees on the CPU, I knew it wouldn’t last long at those constant temps.

That would be great if intel or Amd makes a only four core four threaded but high clock speed cpu can get much more gaming performance, and keeps the cpu lot cooler and low power hungry.
For example a cpu with 4/4 core @5.2Ghz might better than a cpu with 8/16 cores @ 4.5Ghz in actual gaming workload, while producing much less heat.

I love my alienware, I got an Alienware 17 R5, GTX 1070, i7 8750H......however, about a month ago, it started freezing on me randomly, i assume this is after an alienware update of some software but, i can't pinpoint it, it'll freeze for a few seconds then come back and perform as normal......I'm suspecting possibly bad GPU drivers on either the intel or the 1070, but i'm not sure......it could be something else. I wanna get to the bottom of it as they are pricey laptops, I did buy it at best buy with a protection plan, but don't have the funds to replace it at the moment if I were to have to pay for a replcement (or price difference/adjustment, etc) so i'm trying to fix it.........any suggestions on how i should go about troubleshooting this? I have the new 17 R5 with i9 and GTX 1080. Out of the box it sounded like a 747 on takeoff roll with the fans, 94F average temp and throttled a fair amount. A liquid metal re-paste and slight undervolt and it runs at full bore, no throttling on CPU at an average temp of 84F. The 1080 OC I have never had any thermal throttling issues on. I think the kind of person who would dump that much cash on a laptop isn't afraid to put in a couple hours of work tweaking, and in fact I quite enjoyed tinkering with it. Dell is very forgiving in terms of honoring warranty for modifications like this. I agree with the statement that if you don't want to fiddle with it go for the i7 and 1070.

Currently using the Alienware 15 R3 with the i7-7700, gtx 1070, 16gb ram, 1080p screen with g sync etc. I did get it barely used for $1850CAD (currently about $1430 USD) and it has it's ups and downs. It did unfortunately suffer from thermal issues that were a known issue. So after finally having enough of the laptop crashing every day, I reached out to Dell and after lots of troubleshooting, sent out an on-site tech and fixed the laptop for free. It definitely works better now. After that I did swap out the 2 storage drives for a single 1tb Samsung SSD and that also improved things. I do wish the 99wh battery lasted longer than a couple hours of light use. 2 USB A ports isn't enough for what I do, so I have to use some crap dongle. I really wish that white was a lighting option, etc. When it works, its works pretty darn well but there are definitely some compromises.

Metal plate does not protect the screen from the back side, got a black push mark from the charger while carrying them both in a backpack. Right click on the touchpad died despite the fact that I barely used it. The quality control of Alienware machines is shit indeed, it's a roulette, you may get a good machine but the risk of getting a bad one is high. I can not recommend.

I had an MSI Laptop before Upgrading to an alienware (6700HQ being the CPU w/ a 1060 6gb (15 R3)), however the CPU, that thing thermal throttled like crazy and never broke past 3.1 Ghz due to throttling (the CPU Easily hit 100C under a gaming load), the heat made it almost uncomfortable to use, the software for the RGB lighting control is absolute trash (despite having lots of lighting zones), you're fixed to like, 6/7 colours. Absolutely was not happy with the system in my opinion, I wound up going back to MSI, No throttling issues since.

Well, I have an Alienware 15 R2 that I bought in march 2015 and I am still using it in May 2020. Besides the normal dust cleaning and a change of the battery once, this PC hasn't had any maintenance. It still keeps its performance, but I have blue screens every now and then. I would say the quality of the build is rather good. Ultimately I also played some games on an external 144 hz monitor and it is doable. Some of negative experiences that I had include:
    - it runs rather warm/hot normally, I have noticed that under 60% CPU / GPU the fans do not even start! You feel that temperature on your fingers when you type and I personally don't like it.
    - The battery wears out quickly, I think because of the temperature. AFAIK Lithium battery are not taking well those temperatures.
    - Updates are always late if they actually arrive at all. Software support from DELL is not doing a good enough job for the money I paid on this PC. I am not referring to the latest period, it was like this from the beginning.
    - The default power adapter is definitely insufficient, I had to buy the bigger one.
    - On thing that I did not like is the amount of work needed to change the battery. It is buried behind too many components.

I have a 17r4 with a 1080 and a 7820hk and i have it undervolted, on 2 inch spacers off the table and 2 case fans I’ve rigged up behind the laptop. I still regularly get 93° on the cpu. I’ve already ruined my motherboard once and I’m trying so hard not to ruin it again

It's funny how so many youtube creators think that most people buy performance laptops for video editing and hence require the sd card slot, but most cases of people buying Alienware or any performance laptop or PC I have seen are either doing some developer stuff that requires computation power or gaming. In both of these cases SD card slots are completey outdated and unused technology, what with all the phone manufacturers moving away from expandable storage. I know there are people who do video editing and there are also people who do other things which I have not mentioned, but I do also believe that people behind the Alienware market research know what kind of people they get as customers and so the lack of an SD card, but that's just my opinion

I have a 17 R5 with a the 8th gen i7 and a 1070, 16gb of RAM and 5tb of SSD storage (added aftermarket) with the 1440p 120Hz screen. I can play any AAA title out there maxed out on the 1440p screen easily with zero cooling issues. I made my own fan curve for cooling just for shiggles to cool even better than the presets. After feeling the quality of material choice over the competition (MSI ect) gaming laptops....the Alienware took the cake easily. The cooling has been redesigned from the previous R4, and I highly doubt that you'll encounter cooling issues, and even if you did with stock presets, you can change them and most likely negate any heat issues.

My experience with my 15R2 has been horrible to the point that I will never buy another one. It's had issues from day one. It locks up while watching movies in an air conditioned environment. Multiple lockups while gaming. Its very frustrating.

Been an Alienware owner for 10 years, owning both Desktop and Laptops. My current laptop is 6years old, Alienware 17 R1 had issues couple of months of first purchase all repaired in house next day. Everyone has their own experiences but mine has been pretty good. When this one dies shall be buying another one.

I have an Alienware 13 r3, and I maxed it out by installing 32 gb RAM and 2 TB SSDs in both its slots. I installed linux on it, it was kinda painful to install Bumble Bee to run the graphics card, but after it was done, it was an amazing machine. It feels like a tank, it's upgradability and I/O is very good and I got an amazing performance with Linux on it.
The only downside is that the Alienware command center does not support linux, otherwise, I would have removed windows entirely.

WHY are you comparing an overclocked card with a stock one and then say they are almost the same? max q 1080 can be overclocked really well, as shown in Acer predator triton 700. Also, a max q 1080 will be noticeably better at higher resulutions thanks it's bigger amount of cuda cores. It's also, while faster, a little cooler than gtx 1070

Dude. Great video, congrats. I had an alienware 17 r4 last year and as you said touchpad is great, keyboard is awesome, and as an extra the speakers are great as well. If you have the money go ahead and buy it. You will never regret buying it ever...

Anyone who thinks Alienware is garbage just doesn't really know anything about computers. However, from a technical standpoint, they are overpriced when you break it down to performance per dollar. That said, they do have some other features such as durable chassis and an abundance of LEDs which likely increases the price.

Two years later had a fan making noise in my 17 R4 with a 1060. Replaced the fans and used a carbon thermal cloth instead of paste. Paired it with a new 27 inch qhd monitor for Modern Warfare. Barely got 60 fps at Nivida optimizes setting and always ran hot. GPU was hitting 89c with a bad fan. Now I'm run 90fps, game is much smoother and staying around mid to upper 60's Celsius during matches on GPU temp with temps in the room hitting about 80

I don't know man, i still use an Alienware m11x r3 from like 2011 (for school). It wasn't that expensive at the time, got it for like 850euro's. The best built machine that I have ever owned and love it to this day.

Ultimately - Dell sales always make an Alienware Less money than the competition by a long shot. Nobody should be buying at MSRP. My AW15R4 costs $1600. GS65, Razer, or Aero 15X with a paltry 512GB of storage run $2200 or MORE. AW15 comes with 512GB + 1TB HDD, along with 2 storage slots that are easy to expand.
Your video didn't really dispel the bad info here, and missed a few plusses. That said, my initial experience with my 15R4 has been of thermal throttling and likely a need to repaste in the near future. I wish the GS65 was easier to expand storage, but it's a stupid design inside. Aero 15X has a second slot, so kudos there. Razer is awesome looking, but only one M.2 SLOT! AW15 has 4!!!! drive bays. Plus, all the slim and lights run MAX-Q 1070s.

I have a 2015 A15 R1, still runs like a champ! Cost me 1900€ back then, it goes everywhere I go, as I travel quite a lot for work. Nothing has ever gone wrong, only the headphone jack won't send a signal anymore, but I'm using an external sound device anyway and after 5 years, I guess that's ok. So I can only vouch for Alienware, at least for the old systems.

I've owned their 5k Alienware 18 they used to have back in 2014 and it was the best machine I have ever played on. I just recently built a 2500 desktop and I still miss my mobile Alienware 18, incredible machine.
