The point of the bush flight is to observe the wonderful scenery. Flying "direct" ruins exactly that. You are not only following the nav log to get from A to B. You might as well climb high and fly as the crow flies - but that isn't bush flying. Following the nav log means you get to see what the "planners" wanted you to see, therefore the journey is the destination, rather than getting from here to there as quick as possible. Follow the log, guys.
100% Always recommended to do the bush trips in their entirety. But in the event that you need to Re-Fly a leg because of this reason or that reason, it's nice having the ability to fly direct if you need to :)
I disagree - partially at least - I don't think it ruins it at all, it's a different way to fly the flights, some bush flying is indeed about flying through the valleys and canyons as you mention, but other times it's about the destination, landing on short unimproved airstrips, or flying high enough to take in more of the scenery, or just flying bush planes with friends. People can fly the trip how they see fit. I know some pilots in real life would do the same - flying through tight valleys when my plane could fly over it is not the choice I personally would make; but that's the wonders of the simulator, you can do what you want, the guide was simply designed to help those that may have had questions about specific things, or those that struggled to follow the log (It's not for everyone). Doing the trips was one of the most enjoyable sets of flights I've flown in a long time, flying high or low.
A quick tip for anyone like me, who has nose planted the plane when braking and failed the leg of a bush trip, is to pull back on the yoke/stick as you brake as gently as possible to avoid nose planting the planes
If you have trouble finding an airport you can visit it outside the bush trip section and you’ll be starting from the runway. You can then take off and get an idea of the local surroundings for when you approach it on a bush trip leg. I completed the US but after landing at Mariposa there was no confirmation I’d finished but all the legs were marked as completed.
There are basically 3 ways to do it: 1. use the given headings and timings (medium) 2. use the given descriptions (hardest) 3. use the VFR map and try to follow the line * (easiest) * Note that the line given to you on the VFR map does NOT correspond to the headings/timings given to you in method 1 Using the VFR map is probably the easiest. Turn on isoline map and use the elevation info to identify mountains and valleys. Combine this with lakes and rivers and you should be able to orientate yourself if you ever get lost. If you do get lost, just climb to like 10k feet and have a look around. Use Active Pause if you have to. I used a combination of all 3 methods and didn't have much trouble with the USA bush trip. The hardest part is finding exactly where to land. Study the airport photos. Don't feed like you need to spot every grass strip immediately and then go for the landing; you will probably need to do fly-bys on most of the non paved airports.
4. Easier compared to Option 3: Use an app like ForeFlight, plug in the airports on the leg you are flying, use Flight Events to connect MSFS and Foreflight and you can track your exact location and head toward your destination.
Thank you! I was stuck at leg 7 and couldn't understand what I was doing wrong. I tried both of the parallel runways but they didn't work, had no idea that the perpendicular one was the actual runway.
I had done 5 legs until I read here that you can't use the sim rate to speed up things. So I restarted from scratch without usnig it. I'm glad I did - staring out of the windows and observing all the little details is so satisying and relaxing..

I ran out on one leg and had to land on the highway. After finding the repair and refuel solution I argued that I'd waved down a car who helped me out in refuelling and so flew on from there.
Appreciate you making this video! I'm doing the Patagonia flight now and was wondering if my progress be saved! Good to know I don't need to sit at my PC for 8 hours!
found if you call the fuel truck you do need to be parked in a parking spot at the airport which has a fuel truck available. Seems to be bit touchy though. But the repair and refuel hotkey works too.
All you need to know....it better be clear weather cos none of the GPS or autoflight/NAV instruments can be relied on ! But if you reload a saved flight you can no longer change weather or time of day......
Great Video and Thanks. After the most recent patch, my navigation log information is completely blank for all segments of the Breckenridge to Mariposa-Yosemite bush trip. (I completed the first 5 segments.) I haven't checked the other bush trips. Your tips will get me from point a to point b. Thank you.
Hi there, thanks for all the info here but I have a couple of questions so hope you can help. do you actually have to land at each runway listed , does it matter which direction you land from regardless of direction and how do you know if you achieved the leg?
Yes, you have to land at every runway, I do not believe it matters which direction you land, but you need to stop on the runway, then the sim will freeze for a second and then go to a menu
I flew a flight to Banff BC. The airport is still there in FS2020, but looks abandoned and there is no IACO code for it in FS2020. Can you save this abandoned airport/landing sight for a future departing/starting point? Calgary to Banff is a fun mountain flight to do.
To answer my own question, yes . . . If you save your flight at Banff, BC, the next time you reload the flight the aircraft will re-spawn on the runway threshold., ready for takeoff.
I wish I would have found this before trying this bush trip (and my first). I found the nav log to be pretty hard to follow at times. I used my iPad and google maps to get road directions since most flights follow roads (not always). An other tip would be if you get lost, altitude is your friend. By climbing way up sometimes helps is spotting things like lakes, yet can make roads hard to see in thick trees. Pretty cool, going to try the Alaskan trip next if I can figure out how to fly the constant speed prop X-Cub.
Completed the Nevada Bush Trip TWICE (all 25 legs), never pressed Back On Track, never used Dev Mode or time speed up or any other weird stuff. No really bad landings. All legs got the completed checkmarks and Bush Trips menu now shows 100% completed, but the Goldrush achievement didn't unlock when landing at the last leg, Mariposa-Yosemite. I did the Balkans and Patagonia Bush Trips the same way and both of their achievements popped when landing at the last airport. Very frustrating. Is the Goldrush achievement buggy? I wish Asobo would work on a software tool that tracks progress leg by leg or identifies the problem where it thinks you did something to disqualify the achievement. At this point I don't want to fly all 25 legs again until I know what's wrong. Does anyone have any ideas or the same problem?
I've got the same issue but with the balkans one. The only thing I can think of is, I did crash a few times I chose load from last checkpoint rather than start of leg. Not sure... just clutching at straws. Also not sure if they updated the navigation but I get white lines showing the route in my plane where other youtube videos don't show these. I've set navigation to true to life but still have the white lines showing the route.
Regarding fuel, I'm in the middle of the Balkans bush trip as I watch this. At the start of every leg so far I've gotten a message on-screen upon load-in letting me know my aircraft has been refueled. I don't know if this is something unique to the Balkans trip or if it's a new feature that's been added in an update after this video was made, but I can confirm that the Weight and Balance menu is missing for me as well; although since it's been refueling my Cessna for me I haven't needed to worry about it. I do have a question, though: Is there an achievement for not using the autopilot at all throughout the trip (if the plane has one)? I have yet to use it so far, but it's getting tempting as I get frustrated with going back and forth from flying the plane to looking at VFR charts on my MacBook. I like to use heading and altitude hold to free my hands up to do other things and use the mouse to look around, but I don't wanna lose an achievement for something so simple.
awesome vid if you dont mind me asking what screen recorder do you use? (does that even matter ?) what do you do to upload it in HD ? is it recorded while your monitor is at 1440p or 4k?
I'm on leg 4 of the u.s. bush trip and somehow i do not have a nav log. I didn't have it for leg 3 but i managed with just the map. But nothing for leg 4 so im wondering if it is a bug or normal. In the quick menu it says navlog is accessible but nothing show when i click on it or use the default n key.
Unfortunately, it may have gotten moved off-screen, I had an issue with that; when I moved it the log ended up way up in the corner and now I can't 'reach it' with the mouse. I am not sure how to fix that.
Vaillant 44 I regularly experience this and there's not even the options menu. I think it's a bug. I have to quit out of bush trip and then it gives me the option to restart that leg and all's fixed.
Is the air strip on leg 11 the one that looks like a small arrow pointing to the northwest with what looks like a parking lot. Or is it the one in the middle of the field with the two blue houses West of the thin parallell dirt road:).?
i did the new bush flight without assist and at one point had to navigate without the glass cockpit bc it wouldn't turn on lolz landed at the last airport and it wouldn't end the mission so i have to re due the 600+ mile mission plus no achievement lmfao also didn't refuel once and had like 2 or 3 gal left in my left wing.
If i understand (english is not my native language) if you land and press key you configured for refly you can refuel without failed the mission ? you can land anywhere or somewhere special ?
Im stuck leg 11 of the California- nevada bushtrip. Leg 11 is from Spanishsprings to palomino airport. I can't find the damn airport. The airport is supposedly just a dusty air strip that blends in with the desert enviroment. This one of my major gripes with the bushtrips some of airstrips are so annoying to find and locate. Anyone in comment section having finished this part of the bushtrip i would highly appriciate your help:).
I had issues with one of the later legs of tge US bush trip so I just googled the starting airfield to the destination and somewhat planned it out manually. The distance between the 2 points and the time to get between the 2. I tried to keep the same speed to get the timing close.
I can't get in to record right now, but here's a quick image I made in paint to better illustrate it, the runway is the rectangular outline i.imgur.com/ATpYoQw.jpg
In the Yosemite Bush trip, I am two stops away from completing it, but MSFS2020 won't give me the credit for landing at the site. Once I land, it doesn't stop and give me the completed check mark. I also completed the Santorini trip and I was a bit saddened that I didn't unlock any achievements or a earn a badge of any kind.
If you're doing the Bush Trip challenges the white line should appear. Something may be bugged! Be sure to center your view on the VFR Map to your aircraft to make sure you're looking in the correct area ~
Why didn't the devs include the option to fly without GPS in world map also like bush flights? You can always open VFR in world map play and see your aircraft icon on map, whilst it's removed in bush flights.
Does anyone know how to change time in the bush series? Currently I'm on the Nevada portion and it's dark, I can't see anything which kind of defeats the whole purpose. You'd think there would be an easy way to move time forward but if there is I can't figure it out. I have an Xbox Series S if that helps.
My first bush trip. I’ve flown the first leg of the Yosemite Mariposa route twice now and have apparently had my times logged. But the bush menu still shows 0%, I have an aircraft icon next to the first leg and continue is greyed out on the second leg (hence me flying it twice now). Am I missing something? Why am I unable to exit and then start the second leg?
So I skipped a bunch of the airports and flew until I was almost out of gas, like 2 hours, and then landed at a destination I was supposed to, looked up your video, and exited. No progress saved
I can't get in to record right now, but here's a quick image I made in paint to better illustrate it, the runway is the rectangular outline i.imgur.com/ATpYoQw.jpg
Very good video. The simulator doesn’t seem to save my progress when I complete a leg of a bush trip. I stop on the runway and the window pups up saying that I completed the leg. When I exit to the main menu and want to continue later on, I have to start all over again because the progress wasn’t saved. Any idea what is wrong here? Thanks
These are fun. I did the Patagonia trip without a problem (once I figured out how to refuel). But there are still other bugs. The one I can't fix now on the Breckenridge-Mariposa trip is that 7 legs in, MSFS has reverted to real-time. Since I am trying to fly in the evening, it's dark and impossible. Anyone know how to reset to daylight in a bush trip? Thanks.
Thanks for this very helpful video. However, I don’t like the default plane because the vision is so restricted. is there anyway to fly the bush trips with my preferred aircraft and still get the notes, etc.?
Does anybody know if difficulty settings affect the achievment progress for bush trips? does it have to be true to life ? thanks in advance and sorry if its in the video and i missed it
Am i the only one who has the problem Where checkpoints dosent count? It happends for me when i am taking off from the second airport. Anyone know what it is caused or how to fix it.
This feature is horribly buggy. Sometimes you will get stuck and need to google how to remove save files to recover. The nav log will go empty (all nav log steps are gone), and it becomes nearly impossible to complete your Bush Trip.
The game won't recognize my stop at Black Rock City. Flown the whole leg twice, and stopped dead center of the strip. Anybody have an idea what's going wrong?
Well I landed at an airport next to the one you’re supposed to land at on your first leg and it didn’t save, I’m gonna say no to the second question to anyone here
They must have changed it because I paused a bush flight in the air, went to the main menu and closed the game. Came back the next day and I was in the same spot frozen in the air.
I'm not sure how to do it if you are on the first leg, I know that if you make it to the first airport+ you can switch legs and click "reset from", but I'm not sure about how to do it on the first leg
@@pilotben97 Thanks man. I see know that there is a reset after you complete a leg. I guess my ocd kicked in and didn't want to got through completion only to reset. I ended up just deleting the folder for the trip and it seems to have worked without any issues.
Does this trip ever progress into the evening/nighttime? Having a blast so far, but wish it wasn't always 4pm, or whatever time of mid-day it seems to be. Great guide, btw! And thank you!
Don't believe so, hopefully in the future they'll have some night trips! We're creating some bush flight plans you could do on your own of course if you ever fancy that ~
They do not currently. I think the assumption is you're stopping every couple legs for overnights and to sleep and flying only during the day. Night flights would be kinda unrealistic in the cub as it has nothing for IFR flight. Maybe for the other aircraft they could do it, but again it's all supposed to be VFR.
@@cebrady yea, I thought about that too. Plus the fact that the Bush Trips are meant to be about sightseeing and whatnot. I still think it'd be sweet if we had some really early morning dawn, and dusk scenarios. Just to change it up a bit
Very good video and tips. Love bush and off airport landings. Check Facebook and MSFS 2020 BUSH PILOTS. Also check out Copper Canyon, Mexico. Awesome scenery and undocumented strips.
Everything You Need To Know: They don't f@#king work!!! I have a love hate relationship with FS2020. I absolutely love it when it's working. However, it almost drives me insane when the entire game crashes to the desktop on final after a two or three hour flight, or when you fly these bush trip legs only to land and not have anything you have done count. They need to work on getting these issues worked out before they push out more content.
I think the achievement is bugged. I just finished a 6 hour bush trip without stopping.. pretty much half my day gone lol and I never pressed 'back on track' once. I landed at every airport I was supposed to too. That really bums me out. Also I didn't get the achievement for doing all landing challenges. Saying I'm on 80 odd % complete but every one of them has a tick on. This game is just broken for xbox i guess
I have the same problem with regards to the landing challenges. I have a rating on all of the ones required, yet says I only have 87%. I saw a tip somewhere to check each airport involved in the logbook and make sure it just says LANDINGS 1 and has 0 in take offs because if you land and bounce too high, it counts it as a touch and go and fails it. Whether this is true or not, im unsure but am going to check it out later.
I’m trying to figure out how to reset the Patagonia trip because I did use autopilot and my GPS systems to get there. Completed the whole trip but It didn’t give me the achievement
¡Buena suerte!

@@danielthompson6010 True, also another reason to do it.
I agree, but if you dont have a large amount of time and want to finish it in one day, it is always good to go direct on 1 or 2 smaller legs

This one was very difficult for me as well, sad thing is I live 6 miles from there at one point.
In the Yosemite Bush trip, I am two stops away from completing it, but MSFS2020 won't give me the credit for landing at the site. Once I land, it doesn't stop and give me the completed check mark. I also completed the Santorini trip and I was a bit saddened that I didn't unlock any achievements or a earn a badge of any kind.
why didn't i have the white line in my VFR map?? it's so difficult to find the right way
If you're doing the Bush Trip challenges the white line should appear. Something may be bugged! Be sure to center your view on the VFR Map to your aircraft to make sure you're looking in the correct area ~
@@SimulatedAviation thank you! it's confuse me for a long time
I have question. How do I ask to clearance to land?
Can u explain how to start mission from the beginn ?? Pls.
Restart.
So I skipped a bunch of the airports and flew until I was almost out of gas, like 2 hours, and then landed at a destination I was supposed to, looked up your video, and exited. No progress saved
i cant seem to use a noraml flight save it and start in the same place, even when i save
Hi could you show me the approach to the leg 11 palomino airport:).?
I can't get in to record right now, but here's a quick image I made in paint to better illustrate it, the runway is the rectangular outline i.imgur.com/ATpYoQw.jpg
@@pilotben97 thank you so much i have been trying to land on every thing that remotely looks like an airstrip in that area in desperation:).
Could not see my third leg airport. Circled and circled then ran out of gas. What now? When I hit restart I’m back where I landed out of gas.
Thanks.
My question is do I have to land at each leg. Last time I attempted a bush trip followed the vfr all the way to the end and the game crashed on me
Thanks for this very helpful video. However, I don’t like the default plane because the vision is so restricted. is there anyway to fly the bush trips with my preferred aircraft and still get the notes, etc.?
How do I disable "Get me Back on track" feature? don't understand how that work
I fly every checkpoint in bushtrip but it doesnt end at 100%. Do you know why?
How do I get the new bush trips
Does anybody know if difficulty settings affect the achievment progress for bush trips? does it have to be true to life ? thanks in advance and sorry if its in the video and i missed it
how do you restart a bush flight too
Have you finished the Longest Flight bush trip?, estimated to take 94 hours.
Does using the hotkey to repair and refuel not spoil the achievement? Feels like cheating. Can you do it in mid-air?
Am i the only one who has the problem Where checkpoints dosent count? It happends for me when i am taking off from the second airport. Anyone know what it is caused or how to fix it.
This feature is horribly buggy. Sometimes you will get stuck and need to google how to remove save files to recover. The nav log will go empty (all nav log steps are gone), and it becomes nearly impossible to complete your Bush Trip.
The game won't recognize my stop at Black Rock City. Flown the whole leg twice, and stopped dead center of the strip. Anybody have an idea what's going wrong?
Mine stopped recognizing landings as soon as I updated the new patch last week...it doesn't work anymore
Uhoh!
why cant i fly the bushtrips? it wont allow me
'Back on track' has stopped working for bush trips since the last update and also your plane isnt on the VR map anymore, has anyone noticed?
Do you know if the fuel problem has been fixed or do you still have to set up a hot key? Just downloaded a few days ago . A lot to take in.
I landed at Mina but it didn't save my progress :(
Uhohhh No Buenoo :(
Well I landed at an airport next to the one you’re supposed to land at on your first leg and it didn’t save, I’m gonna say no to the second question to anyone here
They must have changed it because I paused a bush flight in the air, went to the main menu and closed the game. Came back the next day and I was in the same spot frozen in the air.
How do you reset the trip? I messed the first leg up and want to reset the entire trip, but I'm still stuck in the air from where I exited.
ForeFlight. If you have it, it will make this a breeze.
Will definitely give Copper Canyon, Mexico a look! :) Glad ya enjoyed it!
I want this game soo bad but the price is just soo dang high
Completed the whole trip but It didn’t give me the achievement
having said that...
i need this video in Spanish, my english is so bad :(((
