I don't know what impresses me the most: The complexity of Rush's music or the fact that they played music with this level of complexity for three hours at a time. Not only that, Geddy did it while singing and playing the keyboards and foot synths. They make me I feel like a waste of chemicals. Jeez
This has long been the song with my favorite instrumental break in rock music. All three of them are doing lead instrument solos at the same time with such high level skill and creativity it's stunning. That said. this is a wonderful version of Geddy's part. If it's not 100% faithful to the original, it's not because you can't do it his way but that you chose to add your own touches. I love your guitar and I love your playing. Rock on!
Seriously Tim, I’ve been listening to Rush for well over 40 years and listened to many bass players trying to play like Geddy, you have nailed it my friend it is an absolute pleasure watching and listening to you play, keep it up fella.
Nice Tim.Me & my original drummer from 1981. Are recording Free Will. This will be the first time playing Free Will in 40 years. Of course I will be singing and playing Geddy once Again! I’ll let you know when it’s done my Bass Brother!
Nice!!! Superb, awesome tone.... I'm obsessed with bass covers and my fav bass is the Rickenbacker (I don't play lol)... Super enjoyable, I can't stop watching lol... 🙃🎸
I used to play (a less than perfect version of) this back in the early '80s & now here I am decades later attempting to finally get it right by watching videos of Tim Starace. Great job Tim!
Watching Tim's videos lately and every time I wanna post it's the best bass cover of that song I've ever heard. Since that is boring AF. I'm gonna say it once hear. If Tim plays it, it's most likely the best cover of it. The guys who originally played these songs, can't even keep up with what they played on the record. What impeccable timing.
Well. I would say that in the case of Rush (and I’m sure of a few other bands) and Geddy Lee in specific as this is a bass cover, they played things even better on stage live than on record. So I would say you comment is true for some bands but I wouldn’t ever apply it to Rush. Still it’s an awesome cover.
I am glad I found your channel. I LOVE your attention to the rhythm of Geddy. That's the most important to me...the timing of his playing and how others can replicate it. Thank you.
The tone is spot on, and playing is absolutely on fire!! I haven't found anybody confirming it, but Freewill definitely sounds like the Rick and not the Jazz to me. I'll probably get a Fireglo, but I'd be so happy to get a Rick sometime in that white tuxedo color!
Just love it. Trying out new earbuds at work today to drown out the sound of the trucks. I'm just nodding my head along Mr. Starace and with this new gear I can really hear how the Geddy Lee pedal has split the Bass signal into two. It really sounds awesome now that I can hear the separation. It's like TWO BASSES. Brilliant. I need a YYZ pedal.
TIM! You absolutely KILLED THIS, man! OUTSTANDING in every way, shape and form! I played this tune back in the early 80's with my band on a 78 Rick 4001 - but I never had it NEARLY this good! Standing ovation, sir!
Holy $&!t!, you made that songs yours and at the same time played it to the song! Just discovered your performances. Picked my bass right up and started jamming along; first time I tried playing this song and you got me halfway there...can't wait to hear and see more. You're an inspiration.
When you started the 6/8 bass part, I closed my eyes and it might as well have been Geddy. I mentioned in another comment that I'm a drummer/pianist but damn I wanna bass. It's hard to beat that Fender Jazz or the Rickenbacker sound. My first bass hero, Steve Harris, has always loved playing Fender. I'm a big fan of a bassist named, Mike Watt, from bands like fIREHOSE and Minutemen, and as I watched one of your videos I was reminded of his tone.
I can get SO much closer to this tone with my US Music Man Sterlings than I ever could on any Rickie, you and Geddy have some sorta voodoo going on, haha! Awesome playing (I can't play those weirdo necks very well either, hahaha!). Thanks, man!
Your performance is Spectacular! Fu@@ing Brilliant! Before watching your video, I had 'thought' about doing a bass video of this song. On second thought, I'll pass! Your Ric, its tone, your impeccable, flawless playing, ALL WITH FEELING, and you play TIGHT with the original band. Man, this is S-I-Z-Z-L-I-N-G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The thing with Geddy is that he didn’t have to and didn’t need to put in the awesome little phrases such as at 2:30........but he did. Tim ..I salute you!
I got bitten hard when I first heard this band when they released Permanent Waves. This was the first song of theirs that I figured out on bass as a total newbie in 1980, when all my high school friends thought this band was stupid and too hard to figure out how to play. LOL! Thanks for showing me how that middle section is (supposed to be played). BTW, is White Ric getting a hipshot, or staying un-moded?

Skills with the bass: 10
Goatee: 10+
Facial expressions / head bops: epic

It's like all the planets have aligned when they do their triple solo thing!
Flawlessly played with loads of character, and as I've said this before - that sound! Amazing, Tim.

It does not get much better than this. Awesome job Tim.

It's usually between Tim and TJH. These two are all you need lol

Excellent the best bass cover of rush I've ever seen!
Perfect use of your freewill Tim, excellent.

Wicked awesome playing. Cheers!
You nailed it, fair play to you 👍
The thing with Geddy is that he didn’t have to and didn’t need to put in the awesome little phrases such as at 2:30........but he did.

Definitely need a Ric though :)

Great! Bravo!
Bootifull 👍
This song has the best instrumental section in the world.
Absolutely awesome Geddy Lee look out that rick is awesome which model is it?
I love the embellishments for extra spice!
much respect.
yeah buddy!
Sounds great I'm a fender precision player but I'm tempted to get a Rickenbacker after hearing that 😂
EPIC!
Nice!
Nice job sir.
Would you rather be a 'gamer', or a 'player'?
Start practicing🎸
Well played....
Did Geddy Lee playing it on a Rick or on his Jazz with the neck pickup solo'd? That's my question! To me it sounds more Jazz-esque!
But I could be wrong, don't take my words for granted :p
His Ric, both pups full on
You must be Geddys father....good job
genius
Now...try singing and playing Taurus pedals along with the bass.
😉

capo
muy capo
you sir are a bad ass
Ah, I can practise guitar on top of it :D
You are master Tim! Do you have badass bridge on your Ricky?
Dude, how do you get your Geddy sound? Especially on the signature jazz bass. I have one w a crate amp and can’t seem to replicate his sound.
Great as usual Tim. Love the sound. Do you plug your tech21 into a preamp before the audio interface? Been looking at the 610
solo. Thanks.
Are you just using the Gedal? Without other stuff? Lol I need that tone on my Rick
EBS Multicomp
Fuck yeah dude!!!
I'd love to see thunder fingers here play some who.
