  • Ever noticed the long list of producers on your call sheet or in the credits of just about any film - blockbuster or indie alike? Producer, Executive Producer, Line Producer... Surely, these producers can't all be doing the same thing, so what exactly are their respective roles and why do you need them? A few words on the subject from (producer) Buz Wallick...
Buz Wallick is an independent producer in Los Angeles, California. Born and raised in Northern California, he cultivated a love and fascination with cinema. Buz has the unique background of being self taught and working on the crew of over 100 projects, including Cinematographer of the award winning documentary Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy . In 2012 Buz began to produce and with his extensive knowledge of film production Buz does what he loves to do; tell stories through the art of cinema.

What confuses me is, when you watch any TV show, you see a lot of "producers" and "executive producers". Many of the producers are some of the actors of the show, but always the names of these producers appear in different moments on the screen. Why? Why not show them all at once and is there a hierarchy in the names and when they appear on the screen?

I just want someone to answer this question for me if an actor decided to start proudcing do they still have to pay their agent as well

Depending on the contract you have with your agent:
      1) You WOULD have to pay the Agent if they got you the role, whether by themselves, or in collaborated efforts with Publicists, etc...
      2) You would NOT if you booked the role by yourself. For example, if you started producing and got yourself a role, in your own project.
      3) However, I have heard of contracts with Agents/Managers where they get paid regardless of how you get a role.
*** But remember, contracts vary from Agent to Agent. This is just some basic info for starters.

Unless Director wrote the script and is the one who brings onboard the cast and crew. Then Executive producer and Director are usually equal in experience or close.

Producer. The producer usually hires the director. But sometimes they're the same person.

It also depends on the film industry you make the movie in. For example US film industry is all about producers, they own the movie and the rights. It's much more of a bussiness, where as in Europe it's a lot of artsy, low budget projects. In Europe it's usually the director that has a bigger role in the movie or both of them. In short I would say this: USA: Producer>Director, Europe: Producer=Director
