Film Industry #22: What Do Producers Do?

- What do Producers do? Well, everything! Well not everything but they do a ton of work. They get everything in motion for a film to be completed, seen, and hopefully make money.
As promised I jump right into what Producers do for filmmaking. Last time we covered the Executive producer, now we get into the world of producers and what that entails in every stage: Pre-production, production, and Post production.
Ultimately Producers are responsible for the entirety of the film, they are the reason it succeeds or if its a huge flop.
Producers do so much! But they also get a lot of help, I'll be covering those people that assist the Producers in #23.

Ajaykumar Akula hmm my top one would be "rebel without a crew" such a good one! then I'd suggest "making good scripts, great" great directors also write. those are the ones that come to mind immediately. I'd have to think for the 3rd

How do they secure funding? Where would someone go to get the funding? Maybe a video on 'show me the money' or similar title would help. Thanks!
+AxelSituation funding can come from a lot of places. I covered this in a video from awhile ago... oh yes I remember now. I'll post it for you.
But in a nutshell for indie the money can come from crowd funding, some filmmakers max out credit cards, some get money from rich friends or relatives. Some network n set up meetings to pitch their idea n get investors that way.

what are your expertise and what do you prefer to do in the film world: producer, director, assistant, cameraman
I am a 1st AD. I dont really care to produce to be honest. its a lot of babysitting lol You have to double check everyone's work. I'l stick to logistics and running set.
Is the executive producer at the top of the producer hierarchy? I've heard they are then I've heard Producer is and executive producer is below them?
sometimes yes, sometimes no. It def depends on the show or movie to be honest. because it does change.
So the executive producer is higher than the producer? because tv shows/reality show use EP
yes in a lot of cases they are. it depends on the deal that was made, what is stated in contracts, and what they are "allowed" to weigh in on. It def depends on the show, or project.

Can you just produce a film with no known knowledge and just hire out and outsource everything?
you can. actually. I've seen ppl do that. and you learn as you go that way. which there isnt anything wrong with that but you start with your own projects though in that regard. in the bigger budget world that doesnt happen really. To be honest it does happen but more in the role of executive producer role. they have the money and Idea but they dont know how film works so they hire the producers that do.
