Definitely more competitive, not just because of the propolation system, the overall package is lightyears ahead of the Ford era S90 ... Especially the interior, most definitely the interior. The only cars I can think of the top of my head are the CT6 Plugin-Hybrid & the 530e. As always, excellent work M!
Is the engine animation at the beginning from the D5, since it has the compressed air tank for the turbo (the green) or did they start doing that on the petrol engines as well?
I didn't hear how far this car goes in electric-only mode. The XC60 PHEV is said to go 18 miles without the gas engine engaged. Any word on when the V90 will get the PHEV treatment? Does the S90 PHEV still have the too-small 15.9-gallon gas tank that the V90 XC has? I want fewer trips to gas stations, not more -- whether for gas-only or PHEV cars! For a long car like the S90 and V90, it's surprising that they couldn't retain the old 21-gallon gas tanks.
I like the car but a bit concerned why some Volvos are selling for well below MSRP. A friend recently bought a loaded XC90 (non-hybrid) for $59.5K - well below the $73K MSRP. His wife loves the car - a great kid hauler not lacking power. But the drop in price from MSRP (I don't think there were any rebates) is puzzling.
Tully3674 the fact that the xc90 ranked horribly in the recent consumer reports doesn't help. I grew up w volvos in my family. I've been trying to convince my parents to replace their aging Lexus w a safe new Volvo. But the Lexus has been extremely reliable and trouble free and they don't want to deal w the hassle of an unreliable car, no matter how safe it's supposed to be.
One foot in the grave, one foot out. The future is most definitely electric, I love Volvo they make simply beautiful cars. I have the feeling that a lot of conventional car manufacturers will fall by the wayside like Kodak did in not accepting and even denying the existence of digital cameras. Tesla is confident about the future, and even offer free charging for life at their official charging points!! Manufacturing Hybrid vehicles IMO is an indication of a reluctance to drop old ways and move toward newer more efficient future technologies.
Very good points. I know it is the future and I know oil is running out, but unfortunately at this point, I would struggle to put $80k on a car that has a turbocharged and supercharged four banger...that's also a hybrid. You are adding tremendous complexity that to me is unproven. Is it going to implode once the warranty is out? how does it handle -20 degree and 120 degree weather? I look forward to episode 2 but seriously the driving dynamics would have to be out of this world for me to even consider a test drive. I feel other more successful applications of downsizing/forced induction would get my money such as Mercedes' new 4.0tt V8. Audi should be rolling out some new engine lineup with the new A8/A7 as well.
weirdshibainu there are companies making synthetic fuel for engines without our using oil to reduce co2 and produced no co2 when making the fuel, they say it's will be available by 2025
You can't be serious, in the fact that actually would take a German car, over a Volvo? A Volvo is one of the most reliable cars around, and whereas Mercedes has a lot of "prestige" to the name, in reality, Mercedes cars are crap. A Volvo is the best kind of car on the planet no doubt.
Richard Williams It would be the same as any other luxury car in the world. This is the norm for cars soon and Volvo will be ahead of everyone else by a few years.
This is the first step to all electric cars, its coming like it or not, it will be better when its all electric as now too much to go wrong, electric motors are far simpler !! so would be more reliable I feel.
Give Volvo credit for trying to extend the life of the petro-fueled engine. The writing's on the wall, these are the last days of gasoline powered automobiles. Cities, like London, can ban petro-fueled vehicles - tipping the scales in favor of "majority-electric" and all-electric cars. After that legislation can make your choice for you!

Very clear, short and precise review. Really really awesome. Tq bro.
1:04 is the D5 diesel with air compressor. Not sure why you are showing it in a video for T8.
What is the electrical cost to charge these vs running fuel.
At the end-WERE IS THAT?---with all those nice homes in the background?--looks AMAZING!
Does anyone know if there's any energy recovery from the rear wheels or is it only the Integrated Start-up Generator up front?
Is the engine animation at the beginning from the D5, since it has the compressed air tank for the turbo (the green) or did they start doing that on the petrol engines as well?
The rear center headrest looks like it protrudes a lot. Does it affect rearward visibility?
Is there a building number or something that I could reference I want to look at these exact features say on Volvos website

This was supposed to get 400hp with the addition of a hybrid electric motor system. What happened?
The engine you showed in animation was the D5 diesel engine...

Would you care to review a G30 M550i Xdrive anytime soon ? If so, when ? Thanks in advance and have a nice day
Finally, a Daqing made Volvo S90 is available in the US market.

Alternative: Tesla Model S
2012daffyduck very true. Although for a bit more money and the interior is a step behind IMO
186bingo oil is not running out...bureaucrats are arbitrarily killing the i.c.e. in the name of the global warming hoax

No, if the extra price doesn’t make economical sense.
I could only imagine the cost of this thing when the warranty runs out and you gotta pay outta pocket SMH
Richard Williams It would be the same as any other luxury car in the world. This is the norm for cars soon and Volvo will be ahead of everyone else by a few years.
Over 50% of mid-size luxury cars are leased in the USA. Out of pocket expenses don’t tend to happen alas.
One answer. You lease.

interesting, you called it a luxury sedan . How do you seperate premium cars from luxury cars?
Valdis Vitols a momentum d5 is a premium car. Inscription t8 is a luxury car

It's an awesome car but Volvo should stop using 4 cylinder engines on flagship cars
Why? They are more powerful and more reliable than those of the other competitors, like Audi, VW, Mercedes and BMW.
It's a nice car but it needs a real engine instead of a shitty 4-cylinder and hybrid bullshit. I prefer the V8 in my S80.
