    Folks - I may have been a little premature in posting this review as not all suppliers yet have stock (it is new to the market) - give it a few days and check back, I'm assured all usual suppliers will have stock soon....

      I won't buy Oxford anymore regardless on reviews, once lost the keys to a disk lock ... Took me a total of 5 seconds to remove it, last yeah I bought the first line of textiles they released, done maybe 1500 miles in 2 months and between the shoulder and elbow just started coming apart (Not even on stitching!) ... however this is due to my experience with their build quality, I don't trust them haha.

      I tried this jacket on at the motorcycle show and it fitted very well if a bit short on the arm length given that I have monkey arms...it was very comfy not very thick so maybe the reviews could tell us what it's like in the cold and I don't mean 9'c lol

    Thanks so much for the thorough review. I'd already just purchased this set and was wondering just how good it would actually be for the money, not having seen any reviews before I bought it (silly on my part I know) but this review has made me much happier about my purchase. So few reviews actually show it being used in all weather for real. So it's great to see you actually using this stuff. Thanks for your video it's a real relief.

However I still use it during the summer as the Rukka suit is a bit thick for summer and doesn't have the ventilation. I've gotta say, I like the look of this Oxford suit, and for the price, it's a winner.

    Tried a set of these on at the bike show last week. I liked them a lot. Three things to point out: the armour is not the top spec but you can change this of course, the back armour pocket is quite small so coverage is limited, and lastly, they don't do an XL long leg in the blue suit. Real shame as I would have bought them on the spot. I'm going to wait until they come into my local shop at Helmet City and have a look at the other colours that weren't at the bike show. I know it's not gortex blah, blah, blah but this is a great suit for the money. It's also very hard to find anywhere at the moment. The Oxford guy I spoke to expects more stock to be distributed by Xmas. That's handy!

    I just got the jacket and think it's excellent. I have my CBT tomorrow and will be doing my DAS in winter. So I wanted a good jacket for the training. It's the fifth jacket I tried but have sent all the others back. As soon as I put the Oxford Mondial on it felt just right. It fits me well and has all the features I want such as waterproof without a liner, removable thermal liner, good pocket options and good ventilation. In fact it fits me better than all the other jackets I tried. I am 5ft 8", 38" or 39" chest and usually between a small and medium in clothing. The medium in this jacket fits me well.
    I would like the neck to close tighter and higher, which is a downside. But the only other criticism is that the jacket doesn't look very exciting. It's just a plain black jacket and doesn't look flashy. It's a tool to get a job done. Nothing more and nothing less. Maybe the grey, like yours, would have looked a little more exciting. But I'm happy with it. Of all the jackets I tried this was the best all rounder and the best value. I will probably now get the trousers because I'm impressed with the jacket.

    That’s really good value. I looked at replacing my Rukka jacket recently and it’s about £1000 just for the jacket. I’ll have to give this suit a look.

    • @jamesfisher1827
      @jamesfisher1827 6 лет назад

      1990 Yes, mine was brought around the same time and I have proofed it once or twice in that time and it’s still keeps the worse weather at bay. The only thing that has failed on my Rukka jacket is the back protector broke and the Rukka one I replaced it with has come apart in the middle. However I can either buy another back protector or bond the two pieces together somehow.

    I purchased a pair of Oxford pants (not the Mondial) in August 2017. The seam split in November 17. Oxford did replace the pants in January 18, and I started using the new pair in April 18 when the weather cooled off. The second pair also split on the seam, in a different spot, by July 18.
    I have subsequently purchased a pair of Alpinestars laminated pants which to date have given me no cause for concern.

  • @andrewdmccurdy
    @andrewdmccurdy 6 лет назад +6

    Agree about using a bonded textile suit. I've use a badlands klim suit and it's so good not to have to worry about carrying extra liners. Bit more expensive than this Oxford setup (🙄) but it's good to know that more manufacturers are now offering the same at cheaper price points.

    • @ramblinwithwreck
      @ramblinwithwreck 5 лет назад

      The Klim is a nice looking top and I'm sure it's worth every penny. But, it's $1,000. This top looks to be available on Amazon for under $200.

    One more thing that's awesome about laminate textiles is that once you've been in the wet weather for a while and then stopped it doesn't hold any water to speak of. Very good for commuting, in my old layered stuff i would get to work and then at the end of the day have to put on horrible soggy gear, with laminated stuff it dries almost straight away as the water is just on the surface

    This outfit seems to be similar in concept to the Aerostich jacket and trousers (made in Duluth, Minnesota USA) that I have been using for a number of years. You are sure right about the convenience of not having to stop to adjust your clothing to handle changing weather conditions when you wear an outfit such as these. The 'Stich motorcycle gear is fairly popular here.

  • @bazerwazer6180
    @bazerwazer6180 6 лет назад +5

    Thanks TMF, however water resistance is surely not the single most important aspect of motorcycle apparel? Unfortunately, abrasion and burst resistance rarely seem to be tested in gear reviews (other than by the likes of Ride mag etc,) and manufacturers seem to use the fitment of CE rated armour as a smokescreen for their products overall safety. There are CE standards for material abrasion resistance, seam strength etc, yet few manufactuers appear to submit their garments for testing, including some of the really high end brands such as Klim and Rukka. Personally, I feel it's time the industry got it's act together over this, so that the bike buying public can evaluate (objectively) whether their bike clothing is fit for purpose. A bin liner is waterproof - sticking some CE approved armour into it surely doesn't make it protective?
    Interestingly, I purchased a two piece riding suit from Aldi a couple of years ago for under £200, and the entire outfit (not merely the armour) is CE rated.....

It cost me £269 in the summer + back protector, but now the price has dropped to £199 at SBS, so it's great value. i'm in the market atm for warmer trousers rather than jeans with long johns so will take a look, but im not one to ride when it's raining and dont commute, so may opt for the duchinni pacific trousers, which look to provide value at less than a third the price, but im still undecided until i try them on, so thanks for the info

I’ve had to have a bath to warm my neither regions up. It’s ok for a bit, hence why this test works but, longer distance, nope.

    Excellent. I’ll be in the market for something like this. I have a mesh jacket for summer, relies on less than 40 degs heat. My other textile suit weighs a ton and the waterproof lining leaves you soaking in sweat. So I bought a waterproof over jacket to carry with me and have ditched the lining. I’d advise the daughter to use the pressure washer next time.

      I have several jackets depending on the season and where I'm going. I have my touring jacket when I'm away for any length of time. Three layers. I normally only need the waterproof layer zipped in unless it gets very hot (Aussie here).
      I'm now a recreational motorcyclist, if the weather is shite, I don't ride. I have several Australian made Dririder jackets which are very good, including a mesh jacket in summer time.

    I bought one of these recently and on the first day of wearing it was tested in thirty miles of torrential rain. In itself it was waterproof, but despite being on an adventure bike, (so behind a screen) cold water found its way down the low neck of the jacket, bypassing all that clever laminated material. The other area where I was a little disappointed is the size of the (optional) back protector. It is 10 cms shorter than the back protector in my previous jacket and only protects the upper half of the spine. On the plus side it costs less than £200 and doesn't wet out like my previous jacket!

    Great review, seems like pretty good value for what you get, glad to see it has CE rated armor padding included. I also use a Knox mesh shirt with back & chest protectors, guess that could also be used with this jacket as well. Not having to faff with rain jackets is a great bonus. Cheers TMF :-)

    Your timing is perfect (or is it really my timing?) I just purchased the Merlin Horizon 3 in 1 jacket and pants on Black Friday sale here in the States. Who knew I didn't need 3 different layers? My Aerostitch suit is 11 years old and still going strong but it is not waterproof, as I've found out on quite a few occasions. Well, might have to wait another decade to jump into today's tech. Story of my life. ;)

    Thanks TMF. I have been waiting for this review for many weeks now. It looks an excellent buy for the price and speaking to friends even the £1000 jackets start to leak after a few years.
    I would rather spend £450 and replace after 4 years than £1400 and replace after 5 years.
    Only problem is the new suits are not generally available yet but I was told by Oxford that more stock is expected very soon

    TMF firstly let me say I love your channel, keep up the sterling work. 😎
    However I purchased the Mondial suit just over a month ago and it's now leaking in the seat area. The dealer (Infinity) are going to send the suit back to oxford under warranty but the staff informed me they have had quite a few suits returned for leaking. Hopefully the new suit will be "as advertised" waterproof. 🤞🤞🤞

    - How does it dry? Does it drip for a few hours until it dries up a bit? With regular rain gear you can just shake it a bit and it's mostly dry. I suspect this stays moist on the outside for a while, which will make walking around in it in buildings and such a bit inconvenient. Also after taking it off you probably need to hang it to dry? Can't lay it on anything as it will leave a wet spot. It's all fine and dandy when returning home or to a hotel, but might prove a bit uncomfortable when camping for example.
    - I have to say I feel a bit sceptical about it not being too hot in summer. My regular, non-waterproof jacket with good venting (just zipper vents, no panel vents like this has) is a bit on the toasty side in 30* heat, this I imagine would be unbearable, but maybe the membranes do their job.
    - Bit of a shame you didn't test out the thermal liner. I get the point that a separate jacket might be a better option, but when you're testing gear it would be nice to get a feel for the entire thing as designed and sold.
    - As others have mentioned - will it last though? When the membrane gives at some point the whole thing is useless.
    All that said the price is really great and since you've tested it really is waterproof it'a a great option for all those unsure weather days. Will defo have a look once it's available somewhere around here.

    I've never experienced a motorbike waterproof that is truly waterproof or indeed breathable, particularly the rubbish one piece over suit packamac type things. I think the best out there is the American Aerostitch brand over clothing suits but they're really expensive and have practical downsides. These seem great!

    Good review!....and I'm sure junior TMF enjoyed it!. The other great thing about the laminated gear is the lack of bulk. I do the same as you re the liner...i never use it, just have a good quality, slim puffa jacket underneath. It's great when you work out a set of gear that does what you want! Steve

    Looks good, although I tend to wear over jackets anyway because I find riding everyday no matter how good the textile jackets are they become very grubby. Also having an extra layer helps so much with keeping the wind out. Maybe I'm just not spending enough?! 🤣

    Thank you for the review. I find it useful as you ve tested it yourself for quite some time. It is so much more than any promotional material. I ve got one remark though: 22 C is not at all hot weather :) I am especially concerned about laminated suit performance in higher temperatures such as 30-35 C. For colder months and rainy days it seems to be doing its job.
    You ve mentioned that you ve been using this kit in Spain as well. How was it performing over there?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

Thank you for your excellent videos.

    A very comprehensive test MF and for the price what's not to like- I can see this being a top seller. Time will tell on what the quality is like compared to Rukka etc but at around a quarter of the price it'll bring laminated kit to many bikers who would otherwise have to compromise. Where as the oxford is an all year round suit my Rukka stuff is a tad warm during summer so that's another thing in the Oxfords favour., though the protection on the Rukka stuff is first rate (not that I've had to try it out) so I'd suspect the D30 armour and cordura/Kevlar type construction on the Rukka might have the edge there which you'd expect beings it is so expensive. One thing you didn't mention where all the laminate suits win over the lined ones is how quickly they dry out as the outer doesn't get so wet. That's a real plus for commuters or bikers going on tour as when you put you kit on again to either ride home on a commute or the next morning on tour after being out in the rain the suit is much drier-often completely dry while the traditional stuff is still wet.

    Jacket is warm, waterproof and its cheap for a laminated without DWR treatment. It has as a waterproof membrane laminated to the outer liner called dry2dry with a 10000mm hydrostatic head which is less than 1/3 of the 28000mm not 3xs more expensive stay dry for 11 hours shifts under heavy stormy rains (not 2 or 3h like this one) goretex pro laminated 3l membranes. This jacket because it doesn't have a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment on the outer liner soaks up loads of water and stays wet for 2 to 3 days depending on your house's temperature. Sent back and will never buy a non laminated goretex pro jacket without a DWR treatment on the outer again as without this it gets soaked and takes 2 to 3 days to dry without using the heater as required which is not good for professional every day use but for an occasional sunday greenlaning outing should be fine. You get what you pay for.
