PS: It's only silent in some parts due to copyright, but it doesn't interfere with the dialogue
Semi-autobiographical tale from the early life of director Franco Zeffirelli looks at the illegitimate son of an Italian businessman. The boy's mother has died, and he is raised by an Englishwoman in pre-WWII Fascist Italy. Living to each other in Florence, and presided over by an ambassador's widow, a group of Englishwomen live a sheltered existence which they believe is guaranteed personal protection in a tea reception given by Il Duce. However, as war breaks out, the women are interned. Occasionally in this English colony is a wealthy American, who visits among her travels and marriages to wealthy older men. She respects the "Scorpioni", as they are known, and secretly arranges for their stay in a hotel. The ambassador's widow finds her vulgar and tries to ignore her, but when the United States enters the war, the American too is taken into custody. Only then does she discover that her Italian lover has tricked her into signing over all her money and modern art collection to him, and is now arranging her execution. This obliges all to join forces. Lily Tomlin also appears as an American archaeologist working at a dig in the city.

She should officially stop touring and make movies but not stop making albums and performing all together, I would die if she stopped, my Queen please NEVER stop, please live to be 1000 years old....only you could pull it off and still look flawless!

He veered from the true story quite a bit here according to his account of what actually happened to the Scorpioni of the 1930s & 1940s.
He explained that they raised him, but they were taken away to a camp of some kind from Florence & he never saw them again.
I think the director just wanted to paint a happy ending for them rather than a sad one.

I cannot understand the age of Joan's personnage. If she had a groom dead in 1914-18, she could have in 1914 18-25 y.o. 1935-1914=21 years. So her age in 1935 is 39-46. After 25 unmarried girl became a spinster. But she looks much older than 39-46.

America only joined the war after Pearl Harbor in December 1941..so Luka could be around 14, I guess?

Thank you so much for a delightful film. It was a good tonic for me. Would you be able to post any more of Cher's movies? I'm particularly keen on Burlesque, Mask, Mermaids, Moonstruck and Silkwood. There is another movie in which she plays a pro-choice character, but I simply cannot remember the name of that one. I 'd love to see that one as well. Thanks again. I have liked and subscribed..

They went in something bigger to them. The italians. Should remain like switzerland. I always tought they not adapted to be in war. Best did art, music and eating. Mussolini was a catastrophic thing for them
