For some reason people think this is why I didn't have much time in the last HC video. Guys this was filmed weeks ago. I didn't have time because I'm currently in Ghana for two weeks, you can see more if you follow me on Instagram!

Oooh. I've been to Corfe Castle! They called it a "medieval skyscraper". Apparently the ruin is a bit atypical in that it was actually demolished, rather than just abandoned; the result of negotiations for repayment after a military defeat. The point where the castle was located was too strategic and was to never be used again.
The guys who took it (let in by a traitor) realised that they couldnt hold it and so to avoid it being recaptured, BOOM.
I was just sitting here wondering how castles fall into ruin like this. Like a fire wouldn’t do it since it’s vast majority stone. So I was wondering did people just leave it abandoned for 100s of years? But surely someone would want to snatch that up and live in it. But I got my answer for this one. It was intentionally destroyed.
@@rachelcookie321 Yea, you can see the main gate is broken in the center and sagged away oddly; that's not something simple neglect will do.
@@rachelcookie321 Well, there are a lot of castle ruins here in Germany. Some of them were indeed used for a long time and just kinda started to fall apart because they weren't properly maintained. Others got damaged during war, keep in mind, the first cannons in Europe were used in like the 13th century. Some were partly taken apart because people wanted to build other stuff and just took the material from the castle or it was in the way of something they wanted to build at that place. A lot of castles were heavily damaged during the Thirty Year's War, during the Napoleonic Wars (Napoleon captured a bunch of castles and deliberately blew them up) or were used during WW1 or WW2 as command posts and were then targeted by artillery. Some castles were also heavily modified after the medieval age to serve either as more modern fortresses or as more palace-like residences of rich people. In German we actually differentiate between Burg and Schloss - both is translated into English as castle. A Burg is the kind of fortified structure from the medieval age that was used as a residence for nobles and also often served as a economical and administrative center for a region while a Schloss is more of a post-medieval residence that mostly looks nice and may have purely decorative features that look like fortification.
But like actually, it was not that rare for castles to be demolished at some point. In the case of Corfe castle, it was actually partly demolished along many other castles in the 17th century as a result of the English Civil War and the near villages partly demolished the castle on their own to get stone to rebuild their own houses after the war. Which is really not that special.
@@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei a burg sounds like a fortress while a schloss sounds like a palace based off your descriptions.
I absolutely love the “Grian editing” drawing. It’s so cute, and includes things from the previous Hermitcraft seasons. The pesky bird mug and the Sahara laptop.

Living only 20 minutes from the actual castle and having visited it millions of times, it looks so good and realistic! Well done grian!

Huh, I guess the equivalent for me in Texas would be living nearby a Civil war or revolutionary war battlefield.
Unless you count the Alamo of course.
I also live about 20 minutes from Corfe Castle! Poole?

Grian didn't actually build the real castle, just the minecraft version.
I live next door to a military camp....
I love that Grian can capture the realism of the old ruins, add a bit of artistic intent, and make it look like a real structure.
Imagine being such a good builder, that even Mojang recognizes your talents. Grian has a true skill for building.

I love how they recreated the actual landscape around Corfe as well as the modern day roads and the Swanage heritage steam railway and then asked him to re build the castle to it’s civil war days
@フリスクチャンネル lmfao nice try
The landscaping is one of the most aesthetic parts of this build. A lot of focus in the ruins, but it's all brought together by the scenery. This is great!
irs insane that they even put in the forest and farmland around the ruins, it adds so much to the final product
Yeah, I thought the same thing. Scar would be proud :)

It was a sad excuse for a "recreation".

This video shows that the creativity of Minecraft truly is endless. The whole interview, historic building, the "fake studio", all the different building styles, it truly is incredible what can be achieved with Minecraft and talent. Amazing video.

Many of those walls and buildings at the time would have been shades of white. They washed the walls and covered them with a lime mixture to protect them from the elements and also make them look more attractive. It's very unlikely that the castles would have been just grey stone. There would have been some sort of plastering done to the exterior.
yes. and probably alot more wood. Its easier to build with and was wa more used back in the day.
Interesting!
yeah but i think he means that in Minecraft its mostly just stone and the little details added in real life which add texture aren't easily available without a full texture job
This is why I like Bdoubleo's diorite castles
There would also be a lot of wooden huts within the castle walls and next to the road leading up to them. But I don't think that was the goal of this project. :)
Hey grain, I know this will probably go unnoticed, but you should check out the Castle of Sintra in Portugal, its probably one of the only castles in existence with so many contrasty colors, and some contrasting shapes that somehow all work together. Not saying to build it, but it could be of some inspiration for a future build!

YES
Pleasantly surprised to see my reconstruction of Corfe Castle in this video! It's the one at 3:55, you can view the animation on my channel. May I just ask to be credited in the description please?
I also agree with Grian that it is really difficult doing a reconstruction of this castle, with all of the variations that exist between illustrations and especially that it was expanded over time! I remember reading quite a few books about the castle. My version is also a bit earlier than the other illustrations, so it is missing certain things, such as the viewpoint/balcony, right of the keep. And had other extra things, such as the wooden structure above the gate.
I really enjoyed watching your build Grian and I think you did a fantastic job, it looks amazing! Makes me want to get back to Minecraft.
For everyone else, I recommend going for a visit, it is a great castle and the surrounding landscape is gorgeous.

we need a castle siege series on this map
Defenders have to defend their castle , and they have to grow their own crops within the castle walls because they cannot leave the castle to collect food at the wheat fields ,
Attackers have to set up camp in the surrounding fields and try to defeat the defenders using attrition , strategy and attacks on the castle , possibly even using basic TNT cannons or modded stuff

This is so gorgeous! The drone footage really emphasises how this would have stood up out of the land for miles to see. Amazing build, Grian!
Grian should be commissioned to create naturally generated structures for minecraft, it'd be great from creating a bridge between the community and the devs. Also Grian is just an amazing builder and would help make new structure fit better in the game and feel alive.
So true they should hire him
The naturally generated structures are really simple and unimpressive on purpose. To inspire people to use it as a foundation and build impressive stuff (ancient cities are exceptions ofc)
Grian trying to pronounce the different parts of the build is hilarious 😂

Only British people would think a place 20 minutes from a fairly large city is remote
@@ducklordthegreat352 Considering that Dorset is the only county without a motorway and that we really only have two actual cities which are Poole and Bournemouth which are also mainly counted as one as they are right next to each other. They may not be grander castles, but there are plenty of hidden gems in the US that are worth visiting. Ancient Native, African, and European stuff..
