Shon he's not in the conversation because he wasn't an egomaniac and self-promoting fool like so many players today. He laid low and let his play do all the talking. I was a Celtic season ticket holder through the 70's & 80's and I've seen them all come and go. He was one of a kind!

When you spend half your career resting for the next game of stirring out with an ingrown toenail, it’s easy to last really long. Bird played through everything like he was The Terminator.

Take this into consideration. Bird was great at everything. He was a phenomenal shooter and passer. He didn't quit until the last buzzer sounded. He challenged not only his opponents but his team as well. Unlike Jordan with respect as well as others, he didn't need to shoot to beat you. He made his team better with assists and rebounds.

Just the fact that Larry was an integral part of saving the NBA from drowning makes him the GOAT, IMO. Add to that his coach of the year and executive of the year, which will likely NEVER happen again, and he's truly in a league of his own, as far as NBA great. I understand that others might be better players in certain, narrow criteria, but Larry truly understood and executed on another level, in ALL facets!

I live close to where Larry grew up in Indiana. In his younger years he played against my brother. I know his roots and I understand his passion for the game. I think it’s in the soil here. It’s not a seasonal sport in Indiana. It’s a 24/7/365 sport here for some reason. You can eventually get a feel for everything that ball can do. Larry felt it. I can tell w hen he’s falling and can still remain conscious of where the goal is and shoots to hit it.

I can't answer that. What I can say is. In 1983. A fifteen year old me ( 53 in thumbnail ) was flippin channels. Larry. Made me stop, & watch. He controlled entire games. Fed all his teammates. Made the games fun, & exciting to watch. PS. Had never watched a game. Before that day. Never missed a Celtics Laker, or Celtics Pistons, game. Until. Larry Retired. Haven't watched more than five minutes since then. I find Today's style of play painfully boring, & hard to watch.

Great reaction. Love the honesty and energy. The vid itself is awesome, too. I think this way, that Michael was the greatest one on one ball player I have ever seen play. He could go through a whole team to score with ease. But Larry Bird was the best all around player I have ever seen. He had no weaknesses. He was a better passer and rebounder than any small forward I have watched, even LeBron. And both Michael and Larry had that clutch gene galore!

Bird told a teammate he spent a lot of practice time shooting left handed because it lessened the pain in his feet. If you watch his games over the years he definitely was a right handed shooter. What's crazy to me is when you see his right hand up close his finger is mangled and crooked - never healed straight.

Love this reaction, and always love your fairmindedness and enthusiasm. Thanks, too, for mentioning Bird's clutchness on defense; he is rarely given credit for his great defense even though he was voted in 3 times as NBA All Defense 2nd team.
I'm wondering, though, if you might consider, when reacting to basketball, enlarging the frame with the game, even though it would mean making the frame with your face smaller, because we're now watching a lot more people and a lot of fast action in what is now a very small frame, v one face that's pretty much stationary.

When he said Bird and Johnson's rivalry saved the NBA, that's no exaggeration. When those two came into the league, there were on 28 teams, and three of them were losing so much money they couldn't meet payroll -- the rest of the league was paying their bills. The finals -- the FINALS -- were on tap delay, showed after midnight.
By the time Bird and Magic were in their third years in the league, not only were regular season and playoff games shown live on network television, pre-season games featuring those two were being shown in prime time.

Yes, Larry was the founder (and 3-time member) of the 50/40/90 club. Something Clayton left off his accolades chart, Larry was voted to the All-Defensive second team 3 times, so he wasn't a slacker on D either. He was one of those guys that didn't try to do it all alone, he made his whole team better. One of the greatest things about his trash-talk was that he would often tell the other team what he was about to do, and they STILL couldn't stop him - not just scrubs, either, but other Hall-of-Famers. How demoralizing is that!?

And Larry could have easily gotten that quadruple double, it was the end of the third quarter and they were up so far on the score & when Larry went out of the game he already had a triple double and they were so far ahead, but the coach and his teammates urged him to go in as he had the entire fourth quarter to get a quadruple double - but Larry just said "nah ive done enough damage" - he only cared about winning and chasing stats didnt interest him - too bad cause that quad-double would have been a great addition to his LEGEND.

When Bird came to the Celtics as a rookie, it became his team from day one. 29-53 before. 61-19 and the conference finals as a rookie without McHale Parrish Ainge Johnson or Walton. He was a basketball player and teammate. To even say top ten and Larry Bird in the same sentence is like putting a white guy on him. Disrespectful. He is number one in my book

3:26 That's David Thompson he was the only other person in the history of the NBA to match Michael Jordan's 48 inch vertical leap! Mike asked him to present the Hall of Fame Award to MJ as he was a North Carolina alumni and MJ's hero.
The world could only hope to know what kind of greatness he would have achieved if not for his addiction to that God awful white powder..

My controversial take however is that he shares that spot with Jordan and Magic.
The three greatest and, without a shadow of a doubt, most important players in NBA history.

One thing many LeBron fans don't consider is that Bird got all his accolades playing for ONE TEAM, unlike some players who chase the championship by changing teams as often as a hooker has Johns.

Larry bird was famous for his beer drinking..Michale tells a story where they were playing Indy at 12 on a Sunday. Larry was out super late drinking with friends and they had to send someone to get him in the hotel room…he came in to locker room 1 hour before game…was quiet and hungover and went and scored 28 points…his mental toughness was unmatched….wasnt the most athletic but he was one of the best. My top 5 is Lebron, MJ, Kareem, Magic and Bird….no offense to wilt, big o, bill Russell but I didn’t see them play..I had MJ 1 until LBJ became leading scorer of all time and is top 5 in assists…best all around player in my book…

James will NEVER live to surpass Jordan in my mind. My top 5 from an old guy : Michael, Bird, Kareem, Magic, Bryant. But there were so many before them v: Dr j, pistol Pete marovich, Jerry West, Bill Russell, etc.
Shon, look up the old McDonald's commercials with Mike and Larry. I bet you'll get a kick out of them playing on being so good

    I’ll die on this hill…
There has never been a more complete all around NBA player that ever played than Prime Larry.
Pre-injury Prime Larry did everything well, was an All D 2nd teamer, and had no holes in his game.
There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do offensively on any spot of the floor, and his hustle and clutch ability was off the charts.
The only player I’d even consider taking over Apex Larry is Apex Jordan, and even he wasn’t the shooter from range Larry was.

This is extremely in Michael Jordan's favour vs. Larry Bird. It was much more lopsided than I originally thought. MJ dominates with the following Points Scored: (14 - 2 - 1) This wasn't even close. I hardly call this a debate. This is more of the GOAT destroying his competition.

BTW, in the 1980-81 season, Bird’s 2nd in the NBA, the Celtics had to beat the Philadelphia 76ers just to get to the Finals to win it all. The 76ers had Julius Erving (“Dr. J”) and Moses Malone, among other all-time greats, on that team. And the Celtics got down 3-1. Only 4% of all teams ever come back from being down 3-1, let alone being down that far against one of the greatest NBA teams in history. So what happened? The Celtics came back in a bruising, fight-filled, gladiatorial series (there’s a famous picture of Dr. J and Bird holding each others’ throats while Malone is holding Bird from behind) where each of the next 3 games was decided by 2 points, 2 points, and 1 point in Boston’s favor. The Celtics prevailed and went on to beat the Houston Rockets in 6 games to win the NBA Championship in Bird’s 2nd year in the league.

I love Michael Jordan. I was a huge fan of him. Watched most of his games when he was playing. But, in most of the games M.J. scored his highest points in, his team lost those games. Not to take away his greatness. Larry Bird was more of a team player. Having more scores from assist, and 3 point shooting, where his team won the majority of those games. So you have to put into perspective what a players key element was, and how the outcome of the game represented what they did in that game. Like you said, "He played winning basketball ".

Irving and Larry used to hate each other, until they did a Converse comercial together in French Lick. When it was time for lunch, Larry told Irving his mom made them both lunch. Well, Irving couldn't say no to that. During lunch Larry's mom said " ‘Magic, you’re my favorite basketball player." The rest is history.
