The new Mercedes EQS has landed in Australia, and the first 2022 EQS available is the AMG EQS53 - the flagship of the lineup that costs $328K! That’s quite a bit more than the Tesla Model S Plaid, which you can’t currently order but was once priced at $187K. There is also the incoming BMW i7, which is an even more formal luxury sedan than the hatchback EQS - and will start around $250K, we think.
So, which full luxury EV would you go for? In today’s review, editor Tom Baker finds that the EQS53 is serene, sporty and accomplished, if a little thirsty on volts compared to a Tesla.
As always, we don’t accept advertising from car manufacturers, and we’re powered by Budget Direct - so this is an independent, honest review of the Mercedes EQS.

i mean, seriously, I love cars. Always have. Love electric cars even more. But 300k... I just could not comprehend spending that much on a sedan.
Us who can’t comprehend that type of cash aren’t the target audience, I’ll be here in 10 years to sweep it for 20k though 👍🏽
it's ok. We aren't all on the same level of wealth. If you make 20k a week, this one is doable. Obviously you don't. Personally, I make 20k a year. And retirement looms large
you're gunna start making big bucks in the short term, and you'll buy one of these new. I can feel it
Really liked the shots and visuals of this review. Looks great, bravo team
Very good review I thoroughly enjoyed it thanks
Totally agree - looks much better in the flesh than in videos/pictures
That navy blue is probably the nicest looking EQS I've seen. Great production as always tom, some of those shots were brilliant. Out of curiosity what was the test route you took the navy blue EQS on?
Is that second road putty road?
The more I look at it, the more I like it. I prefer it in that red.
Love this car. I just have to save up.
This track looks like what is seen in Need for Speed 5 ?
I'd hate all those screens on at night, I dim my gauges to as dark as possible at night.
For someone in the market for this type of car, why would you choose this EQS compared to Porsche Taycan Turbo S? Looks (proportion) are horrible (saw it in person). At this price point, would love to know how many they sell for the entire year.
It's an individual choice. As much as I'd prefer the Taycan it would be a boring world if everyone drove the same car.
I, too, am a big fan of Porchase.
Im pretty sure Mercedes knows what they are doing. Its a lot cheaper in USA. Australia has high luxury car tax.
@@JohnLam3 Damn autocorrect.
@@BobbyDazzler888 Watching John Cadogan, puts a perspective of how car journalists are manupilated for a particular style of coverage. Press cars given to them to follow a very particular window to review and release. If you see Chasing Cars original style video releases, they do a lot better. So, I really want to see how many are actually sold at this price point. They should have been dunking on how it would be a failure in sales for this price point compared to other markets. But, if they do that, blacklisted!
All that interior lighting makes it look a bit Bangkok Night Club.
But don't worry - it's, "ONLY", $330,000 dollars...and with the Mercedes Benz Price Guarantee - you are guaranteed to pay the HIGHEST POSSIBLE PRICE.
All this will make you feel soooo special.
A 10 year (250,000) Warranty on the Battery is EXCELLENT - good job on that part.
@ g ride Sounds like you have spent too much time in those Bangkok bars ;-) Besides that, so a RR Phantom is ONLY $2 mill+, a Ghost is only around $1mill (both RR I'm pricing fully specced and is just approximate), a Bentley is ONLY $700k+. So what's your point?? Yes, these cars are damn expensive. And yes currently for all CARS you are guaranteed to pay the highest price possible due to Covid, lockdowns in China, electronic components shortages, rising inflation around the world and etc etc.
Hmmmmm
This man isn't enthusiastic enough. Very Australian of him. Mercedes want him to be so much more excited. That's what Americans are for
I’m not a salesman, I’m here to give you an honest opinion. If you want a Mercedes ad, they have a RUclips channel.
Why does every electric car have to look like a pebble 🙄
CdA
ever heard of drag coefficient?
misleading! This starts at $147K NOT $320K
Wrong. Are you perhaps assuming everybody is in the United States?
Same centre vents as I have in a 3 series and 8 series BMWs. They are useless. Extremely difficult, almost impossible to aim perfectly, for myself and even others. Most don't notice it until they start to attempt to aim it for themselves. Test drove a new Dodge Ram DT and no issues. But it seems everyone is going to these extremely thin centre vents. Absolutely horrible. Will be a toughy when it comes to buying a new car.
Have you tried them
This lump weights 2.7 tonnes. And if you think your getting 500k out of it I've got a bridge you might be interested in.
You’d easily get 500 cause you drive like a grandma
I think you'll find the performance model 3 is the better choice, if you are after some good zoom and don't need so much Mercedes self confessed refinement. Let's not go bling
Yeah but as a daily driver Mercedes is just better
People with this kinda money just buy a RR.
I bought a Polo TDI for less than the price of the Heads up display on this model. The diesel polo will outlast this spaceship….with probably less lifetime emissions…
RR’s are for knobs
@@jew931 enjoy!
The price baffles me. If this sells in respectable numbers my idea of success is totally warped and wrong.
It’s not meant to sell in numbers - it’s an S-Class grade vehicle.
Too much screen for me.
I will take Tesla S Long Range all day long
Everyone is on the same page with this one yeah? It’s a considerably unpleasant looking car yeah?
Not really, I've seen worse.
The amount of pleasure that the buyers get out of this is severely limited. Let us be honest. In any case, pleasure is not what life is about. Life is about honour, duty and problem solving
