    Hope everyone enjoyed!! I haven't done this previously, but in the spirit of usefulness (and also because I didn't use as much on screen text because the video was so long), here's the complete script:

    “I’m just a random guy on RUclips making videos about TV shows.” Please don’t diminish your work. Almost everything in society today tells us that having opinions either means your right or your against me, and that’s not the case. Being able to analyze something and find the nuance in it is normal and what a lot of people want. I just listened to your “Masculinity” video and I appreciate the end of the video where you take a minute to break down where your view could be skewed or uninformed. It’s important in the world, so don’t undervalue what you’re doing. I promise you the majority of your viewers don’t.

      Yes. Schnee's ability to consider all sides of an issue and invent new sides as need shows that he is an intellectual of both humility and merit. Our intellectual culture would surely be much improved if the people responsible for guiding discourse on serious issues behaved with the same thoughtfulness and evenhandedness with which Schnee discusses Netflix shows.

    I think the key difference between a 'why' question and a 'what' question mostly comes down to a matter of intentionality and specificity. 'Why' questions more than anything tend to be very generalized, vague, and just establish that there is a lack of knowledge on the topic; they can also be very easy to just answer with "I don't know." A good 'what' question will focus in on more detailed aspects of the subject, and once they are asked, and you take the time to think about them, you can come to SOME kind of conclusion just from the nature of how they are structured.

      yes i agree here, i was doing on nelson mandela and i kept asking why nelson was a good leader, but if you instead ask what makes a good leader, and then work backwards you can get much further, this is why 'why' questions arent bad questions they just cant be your final question. If you question is a why question you need to dig deeper, why questions are focus questions.Anyway idk

      God, I’m sorry! I think film analysis teaching really tends to suffer, because it’s a visual medium, and all it’s masters are going to be experts at saying things visually. It’s really hard for someone to then turn around and explain with words what’s almost subconscious as a visual. It’s like an extra layer to that classic problem of experts in something being really bad teachers sometimes.

It really is amazing how the path of knowledge can spread its seed from professor to pupil and so forth from centuries beforehand. @@schnee1 so I started with the basic description of "An antagonist with personal significance to the hero"
      And from there looked at characters I felt embodied that and started to notice patterns. I ultimately created 4 subclasses (for lack of a better term).
      Note these are not mutually exclusive per se. Some can be a mix of 2 or more, and sometimes you can have characters who are each other's nemesese but in different subclasses.
      Type 1: Doppelganger
      The nemesis who is a variant of the hero. Whether in a literal sense like an evil clone or the like, or a more symbolic sense like a dark mirror or narrative foil. (You can have a doppelganger who isn't a nemesis, but there is noticeable overlap)
      Example: Asch (Tales of the Abyss)
      Type 2: Trauma
      A nemesis who had a severe negative impact on the hero's past that left them emotionally and/or physically scarred. Often but not always the inciting incident.
      Example: Ridley (Metroid)
      Type 3: Legacy
      The nemesis who did not have start off as a personal foe (or was of minimal personal significance) but grew into nemesis status through long-lasting and/or repeated conflicts.
      Example: The Joker (Batman)
      Type 4: Hard Counter
      The nemesis who is the walking embodiment of the hero's flaws and weaknesses and is able to exploit them to make the hero struggle more than any other foe.
      Example: Syndrome (The Incredibles)

This video in and of itself is one of those closer-to-the-truth structures for me. It perfectly encapsulates years and years of conversations and attempts to bridge the gaps between my internal world and what the people in my life see… wow. Frick. I’m stopping to write this an hour-ish into the video, just sitting, paused, to try and process what this means for me… my brain is doing all sorts of complicated things, frick. Adding this to the list of things to show the people in my life ig 😅
    Edit: Man. having finished this, the whole “thinking about the process of thinking” thing explains a lot about me as a person, especially in contrast to others. I’ve been actively thinking about *how* I think since I was maybe 10? I didn’t and still don’t see how understanding the process of generating ideas would ruin it, because it can only lead to generating more ideas, and ideas about ideas, etc.
    (This isn’t me saying i’m better or smth lol. I’m just autistic and ADHD, so I couldn’t shut my brain up even if I wanted to. Plus, there were HUGE shortcomings to my approach to things, both at that age and onward- it just happened to point me in the right direction long-term.)

    i just wanted to say i found the authorial intentions part in the overanalysis section really compelling. i've often had the exact train of thought you described for the last 10% of people (even about my own theories) and the way you argued the value of the analysis and how much of art is subconscious was really persuasive for me.

    “Questions are your only tools to understand anything” I love this quote mainly just because of how true it is. You can’t ever truly understand something unless you ask questions. You can get what someone is saying with no question asked, but to understand what someone MEANS with no questions is simply impossible. Questions are essential to figure out the true meaning of something. “Why did Powder vomit the firelight?” “Why did she ask if they were still sisters?” “Why did she make two chairs?” Questions are the golden ticket to answering questions and understanding the simplest of things on the deepest level. Well stated :)

    It's wild how some of these things are things I've implemented in bits and pieces when I'm like, explaining why I am (in terms of political belief) an anarachist, or why gender is a colonial construct, or infodumping about an album I like, or ranting about something in a tumblr post or discord DM. Like, examining your own biases and stepping back away from what you know, forgetting the facts, that's something I've been doing a lot with my political opinions and understandings of social issues, and even my relationship to my own queerness. Being confident until proven wrong, and being humble when flaws in your own ideas become apparent, are incredibly important to discourse and discussion and coming to a greater understanding with your peers. I’m currently taking a complex system and I find it so interesting how forgetting the facts 37:00 parallels to the concept of reductionism and the pitfalls of applying it in scientific methodology. We just talked about in class how when applying a heavily reductionist approach you can get so lost in looking at the details isolated that you miss any emergent properties that can occur when those individual parts interact. My viewing of this video came at such a perfect time, what a crazy coincidence.

    Love the video. I tried using some points and giving examples to myself while watching. So for example lets ask why. Chainsaw man related part 2 spoilers!!! Why has the story slowed down/gives the feeling of slowing down. Ok, here are what questions. What is our MC doing, our MC wishes for a normal life, he wishes for a normal life as it's his dream. Normal life is slow sometimes and boring, which is being shown via the story slowly moving.
    That was a random example I came up on the spot, but it works for me. Great video and thanks, as I enjoy analysis as a process in general for stories especially.

    Thank you for explaining al this so condensed. You are a briljant guy, with a briljant background in many ways. My advice is: don't undermine that.
    I find it brave that you speak out that you get uncomfortable with many people wanting to know how your brain works. But man, thank you for sharing it like this.
    So, I do understand you... I play guitar for 20 years now, but any well practiced student would be at my level in a couple of years, I'm not that 'skilled' or 'practiced', but I am very experienced and music is just in my heart and soul. But analysis and storytelling as well, and you have been such an amazing source to listen to!
    And now learning your backstory and a bit of character arc ;) haha
    But seriously, I understand your discomfort, but you must realize how amazing your mind seems to be for most average people.
    You look up to your teachers and so many others.
    I consider myself pretty intellectual compared to my peers, but I would consider you a teacher for sure.
    When I play guitar, sing or dance, you might think that I am good... and that is just because you would not truly know what you are talking about.
    But I know where I stand, and I look up as well.
    My teacher would say to me, when I ended first place in competition: it is not because you were that good, the rest was just a lot worse, buddy
    The right kind of love to pass on to you now I guess ;) Look at in from all sides
    You have helped me a lot with this video. It is like listening to myself 5 years from now. I was just listening to my own rhetoric for a part, but you have gave me quite some more pieces of the puzzle, understanding and clarity.

    A very simplified form of analysis that I see you follow is the 5 common topics. It follows the form of definition, comparison, circumstance, relationship and testimony/authority. I suggest everybody give it a quick look. It’s a model that when implemented, gives you a structure for critical thinking.

  • @BeekersSqueakers

    These have a lot of similarities to analysis tools used in engineering (my profression).
    For finding the root cause to problems we use the "5 Whys" technique in which we ask "why" about a problem and then ask "why" again to each subsequent answer atleast 5 times. The hope being that the deeper you look the simpler your solution can be and you can potentially fix other problems you didnt even know you had.
    Too often I see people stop asking "why" too soon and they miss the opprtunity for more impactful solutions.
    The importance is just to ask recursive questions. It doesn't matter if its a "what" or a "why". "Why" is just more relevant to engineering since we're looking at causality.

    I think intentionality when it comes to overanalyzing depends on the creators behind a creation; some creators do things subconsciously (say some Stephen King works), some don't care about it at all, and some are very deliberate (Phil Lord/Chris Miller or Neil Druckmann). This is where knowing the creators, actors, animators, etc. make things easier. I like a blind playthrough/watch before looking at creator's intended meaning or how deliberate they are with the creative process.

    Bit of a comment on the subject of this video: I think what Mr. Schnee is talking about here is actually more about interpretation than about analysis. For me, the word analysis implies that there is one underlying explanation or solution, and you just have to find it. While interpretation is still an act of meaning-making which relies on logic, but the number of valid interpretations is open-ended. When it comes to narrative pieces of art, there often isn't the one right explanation, there's several which would make sense.

    Y'know I'd actually be incredibly interested on your opinion on videos by MatPat aka Game Theory, Film Theory, etc. Im here (51:55) after you tell the invisible ball story and you're explaining how people try and make things more complicated thru analisis and confusing and that just reminded me so much of some of his theories and how frustrated he can get when making them, especially his FNAF ones. I have no idea if what you explained is actually happening in some of his theories but its the first example that came to my mind after that part. Have you ever watched any of his theories? What do y'all think?

    • @schnee1
      @schnee1  Год назад +1

      MatPat's approach is interesting, definitely worth defining. The why of the theories on that channel is pretty straightforward: entertainment, but the what they zero in on actually mirrors something I talk about in that same soccer ball section of the video: transformativeness. Even though those theories are not looking to be well supported (on purpose), they always end up producing a version of events that's completely different than the surface level picture -- and the more radically different the better. It mirrors that awesome feeling of reaching that deeper level of reality where everything looks different... but its just the feeling of that, not the reality. It would be like coming up with a bunch of alternate "theories of everything" in physics that aesthetically look and feel like general relativity, just to have fun bending your brain that way. (And i do think those theory channels are intentionally just theory-playtime. They're not trying to get to any actual real meaning, it's just fun.)

    Fascinating. I recall learning the bits before 14:00 was basically the reason the scientific method transformed humanity around the 15th-16th century, and it was just _mystifying._ I'm glad this is being disseminated like this, and as much as I'd like to say that this video _isn't_ actually too dry, I'm disappointed with the turnout 😅
    Also, hate to """"accuse"""" someone of being humble, because of how hard it can be to deal with myself but... 55:40 _you _*_sure_* it's not as specific. That was _quite_ on the nose there, G! 😁
    _Also,_ also, 1:13:00 fortunately, I actually seem to do that _too_ often, or rather, I did it too often without having a proper basis on which I was thinking. Not _terribly_ off base in many, but still, yeah. I like to say "I think, therefore, I think some more"...

    I myself did not watch all the way through i enjoy coming to my on conclusion but i don't spend to much time on it and enjoy hearing what others think but one section i was really wanting to hear was the overanalysis section. Although i myself never analyze too much, I always get mad when people get mad at people who do. Let people enjoy media the way the want to as long as it isn't hurting anyone. When you do go into deep analysis into stories there's a certain point you should recognize where your starting to stray away from the authors intent but that's fine and as long as you recognize it it shouldn't be harmful to authors . I mention this because plenty of authors like tatsuki fujimoto were put under alot of stress from these deep conclusion people drew to that he had no intention of writing. I couldn't agree more with the first point you made about how analysis isn't always overanalysis. Tatsuki wrote a short story about the pressure and stress he was being put under and when people went on to explain it many people kept saying there were taking things to deep when they just explained the message. thx for reading this youtube rant if you did.

    Great stuff. I think criticism is in a sense the deconstruction, or maybe better the reverse engineering, of someone else's creative process. In my own creative process I am quite aware of a cycle of analysis and synthesis. In the synthesis phase (in this context when you are formulating theories) I think it is really important to suspend adopting a judging mindset. You touched on this in your "forget the facts" rule. I really think this is crucial to prevent you from short-circuiting yourself. I really believe the postponement of judgement and the creation of a sense of intellectual and creative space is maybe the most important part of the method for me. Thanks for all of this interesting stuff you are producing. Appreciate the editing and density of the content as well. Cheers.

      I mean hey I had no idea who the mannings were and it was just as impressive to see QEMT 😆
      Question though: Would you actually characterize this as the brisker method applied to literature? I've been trying to think of whether I would say that's accurate, and I was especially thinking of it after I heard you also say in the intro ep of your podcast that you used the brisker method in finance. Part of me just sees it as using the rigor and clarity necessary for brisker learning, but not the brisker method itself -- which is a specific type of inductive categorization. But then maybe that's essentially what the brisker method is? Is it just any inductive categorization with rigorous standards of clarity? Or can you really call it the brisker derech if its not gemara/halacha? Is this question just semantics? I dont know, what do you think?

    • @user-bt5kr7ng7k
      @user-bt5kr7ng7k 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@schnee1 Teacher #5 has told me in the past that the Brisker method is just proper thinking and can be applied to every area. I am certain that I have fruitfully applied it in physics (like we do on our podcast "Physics to God"), and it's telling that a lot of the examples in your video were from physics. Your video has made me wonder whether when I analyze the World of Medrash (stories from the Torah) if I'm just applying the Brisker method to narratives (something similar to what you're doing). That being said, there are certain aspects of the Talmud and science that don't translate to literature, but I'll think about whether I can define exactly what they are. Very thought provoking...

    • @schnee1
      @schnee1  11 месяцев назад

      Ok whoa "brisker method is just proper thinking" is a WILD thing to say in my opinion -- do you agree with stating it that way? assuming you wouldnt say 2 + 2 = 4 is brisker method, how would you understand his statement? (i think i have an idea, but i want to hear your take)

    • @user-bt5kr7ng7k
      @user-bt5kr7ng7k 11 месяцев назад

      @@schnee1 I don't think he meant all proper thinking is the brisker method. I think he meant that the brisker method is a universal method of proper thinking, and can therefore be applied to any area.
      So, even in the case of 2+2=4, if you were to try to analyze the conceptual underpinnings of arithmetic and simplify it until you found its basic principles, that would be an instance of applying the brisker method. (I think it famously took Russel and Whitehead until page 379 of the Principia Mathematica to prove 2+2=4 from basic axioms. So even that has much depth.)
      Moreover, I think Teacher #5 was also implying that the Brisker method is just trying to define how the human mind works when it deeply analyzes any area using conceptual categories. i.e. Aristotle was using it long ago. Additionally, part of the novelty of Reb Chaim Brisker was in formulating this universal method of proper thinking in modern categories and giving it precise terminology.
      I'd like to hear your thoughts. Teacher #5 very often lends himself to various interpretations.
