*phew*. WHAT A VLOG. this week's video is the well requested QUERYING VLOG. i have been querying project.ghost for a little under 3 months. and i've had my EXPERIENCE of the query trenches. watch me cry, crumble and struggle through querying my book for 20 minutes. i really want the true feelings of writers to be more at the forefront of authortube. i want people to find relatability and comfort in my experiences. i want to be open and share the struggles as well as the exciting times of a writer's journey. and if that means crying in front of the camera - so be it.
i am not giving up on this book, and i am doing mentally okay - so please don't worry about me! i really just wanted to capture a writer's suffering - a writer's vulnerable moments - to express how we are all so human and to spread the word that: writing SUCKS sometimes. i hope you truthfully gain something from this vlog - it took me a while to compile and also some of my soul to put on the internet. so please watch the whole way thru to help me know you appreciate me!! thank you, so much. for everything. i adore you all ♡✧。
(some additional things to add to the vlog)
    - please excuse the terrible footage!
    - please excuse my terrible state in LITERALLY ALL THE CLIPS
    - sorry for me spelling some words wrong/grammar in the subtitles (i was editing this video for WEEKS so my brain is not okay)
    - and yes, i cannot spell mediocre.

@@TiaLove28 this is a good recommendation. It won’t necessarily mean you will keep on self publishing. But it is a good stepping stone. I’ve had professors who self published their first few novels, then found an agent. So that is also an option for you

@@nadineehlers711 thank you!! yeah i thought maybe it would be a bit easier. publishing houses are looking at the money and overall popularity. but that doesn't mean it's not a story worth reading. i don't think i'd go through a publishing house to start off either 💞

Ana, please don‘t ever give up on something that means so much to you. Print out your book, design a cute cover that you like. Put it on a shelf for everyone to see and show it to everyone. You made this!!! No matter whether it‘s published yet or not. It‘s a story only you could come up with, and one day, it will be released into the world. Maybe that day is tomorrow, maybe in a year, maybe ten. But until then, be proud of what you made! ❤️ sending you love from Germany!

Being from a country where it is very rare to find someone passionate about writing, I understand how you feel, Ana. My parents know I write, but they have never praised me for it or even tried to read it. I've never had someone tell me that my writing is good and I've never had anyone tell me it's awesome or great to have a very abstract hobby like people my age. The feeling of being alone is the worst for me as someone who has been writing on my own for my entire life. Ana in my eyes you are an amazing person and all your projects and the way that you are so passionate about writing made me love your channel with all my heart. Keep trying girl! In my opinion, agents only accept trending genres. I've heard of many authors that have become best sellers that got 1000+ rejections from agents. I will always want to read your books and I know one day you'll find an agent that would love your book. As always, love you, Ana❤

Hello Ana, I am also an aspiring author, and though I haven't sent my book out yet, I get what you're going through. The doubts, the despair, the disappointment. I am also lonely and don't get much support from my family as a writer. But I think it's important to be your own rock in this situation. You have a dream, and you're headed towards it, that's the most important thing. Keep writing, because we writers cannot live without it (I've tried), and the world will learn of you one day!

Your book will be read, it will be loved, it will be hated, but that's what makes it real. Although not published often, novellas can be amazing, for example: Animal Farm, Little Prince, A Christmas Carol, and more. Being a writer myself I know it can be heartbreaking when you pour your heart, soul, mind, time, energy, everything you have into your story and the characters you love and publishers reject or completely ignore, it digs deep but your can't let it find a home within you. Your not alone

I'm really sorry this has been such a tough time for you, I'm also in the writing process and I can feel your anxiety and dejection through the screen like its my own.
Something to remind you of, hopefully it will be encouraging: A Wrinkle In Time was rejected 26 or so times before it was accepted, and now it's beloved by many. It's not about a number, it's about who you reach, when it comes to querying, I think.
Keep reaching out, don't give up on your novella, because it will fall into the right person's lap sooner or later, and it will most definitely be given the chance it deserves. Writing is such a personal thing, and I wholeheartedly believe it will reach someone--be it a publisher or a reader--and it will change a little piece of them that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.
Don't give up on your work! It will never give up on you 💕💖💞

i've been watching your channel for a while now. you are hands down my favourite writer youtuber. you explain things perfectly for my brain to understand and learn and you're entertaining as well. when i learned we were the same age i was genuinely shocked, it gave me even more hope for my writing as i always figured my age was a boundary, but it isn't
i live in america unfortunately, but i also understand having friends online and in other countries, sometimes halfway across the world, and being alone is awful, i feel it pretty much daily. this may not do anything but, your videos have single handedly given me the motivation to write again, and i appreciate you and your channel. being friends with a person like you would be wonderful, and so i hope that soon you find people physically that you can enjoy spending time with, cause you definitely deserve it, everyone does
best of luck to you and i shall continue watching your videos :)

it’s such a HUGE accomplishment to even have written a book and completed it! Not everyone can say they’ve written a book! I envy that because I’ve had a book idea for over a year and every time I struggle to start writing it. In all this time I’ve not even written a few pages 😅I end up hating everything I write and scrapping it. It makes me wonder if I’ll ever even complete a draft for it. Anyways, you should be really proud you’ve completed a book and with the amount of passion and drive you have I’m certain that you’ll find success, it might just take more time than you want. But hey, you already have thousands of people who would love to read your book including me so that should bring you some comfort

Wipe those tears gurl. The world does not deserve them. I know how hard it is to be a writer. My time in Sri Lanka, it had been very hard because well, there are fewer people here who'd publish a book by a non-native person. Now in England, it's not much different. They refuse my books because well, they are novellas. I've cried so much about being rejected for a whole five projects I've written. And why? simply cause their novellas. It's hard. I know. I think I know better than anyone. And what does my family say? "You're not experienced enough to be a writer anyway. Try thinking about your high school life."
I can go on and on about my life but I won't. Right now, you need to know that you're not alone. I'm only 15 years old and probably my advice isn't gonna be important. But just know that you are doing great. You are an awesome person. You're a great singer, a passionate songwriter, and a very creative and talented writer. Don't worry about what other people think. Slowly work your way up to writing a novel. It's not easy, believe me I always fail at trying big books but one day, it'll be worth it. All those novellas you wrote, find someone who appreciates it Find someone who'd say, "Wow. This is great. We can publish this without a doubt." Don't dwell on one thing. You'll do fine bestie. Luv you. 🥰💗

Have you thought about mentioning your follower count/RUclips channel in your query letter? I've read that that can help because it shows you already have an established audience who wants to buy your book. This is primarily a business for them, so showing that you have the ability to market your book might help.
So many authors have experienced this and then later become published. It's hard to receive the rejection, but each one is leading you to that acceptance letter. I remember listening to Stephen King say that he would pin dozens of his rejection letters to his wall. Then one day he got an acceptance for Carrie and a 400k advance. You got this!

Hi, writer here! I wanted to comment on what you said about potentially pursuing a career in law. I had a similar debate last year. I had always wanted to be a full-time author and when people told me it was impossible or that I should find a real job (which was often) it only made me want to do it more. Anyway, after moving out on my own I had this realisation that I had stopped enjoying writing, and part of the reason why is because I had put huge pressure on my books to be financially lucrative. When I decided to pursue a stable career, what happened was my joy for writing actually came back because I could finally write more freely. I guess what I’m trying to say is, don’t see a career as “giving up” on your dream. See it as a way to support your dream. You can still get published even if you have a full-time job, and in fact that’s the case for pretty much every author out there.

I'm not going through the traditionally-published route but from what I've seen, you're feeling the exact same thing EVERY person I respect as a writer has gone through. The insecurity, the rejection, the self-doubt, the isolation, the exhaustion. So I just want to say that, you're not going through anything abnormal. And this is not to invalidate your feelings, but to tell you that this is the road. This is the process. You're on the right track. Right on schedule. DOING FINE. You're simply in what has been described as THE hardest part of the process by almost anyone, querying/submission/etc. This the part where everyone breaks down, everyone starts to question their choices. The fact that you're there means you pushed through the part 99% of people never even make it to to actually get to the REAL difficult part. All you have to do is keep going to get through it. I barely found your channel, but I can tell when someone has the passion to make them successful and you have it. KEEP GOING.

I am terrified of starting querying one day when a book is as ready as I can make it, but videos like these, where people show the truth, the good, the bad, the weeks of quiet can help so man writers. It is extremely brave if you to show all of this to us, to open up and make ither wtiters feel less alone in their journey.
Writing can be such a solitary life and often times peoplenonly show the good parts... I appreciate videos about the reality of writing and querying.

Thank you for sharing this tough part of the writing journey, it is so cathartic tbh thank you, thank you. I'm glad you're moving forward with focusing on something else, as simply the length of Project Ghost is def too short for publishers to risk on---that means the idea itself is not what's being rejected, thats a silver lining right there.

Ana, my heart goes out to you right now. I completely understand how you are feeling. I've felt that same imposter syndrome to the point that I've never made it past the outlining stage of any of my ideas. But you have inspired me to keep going. I love your content and getting to follow along with your writing/publishing journey while I'm on my own journey. You are a wonderful person, and the world is better with you in it. Friendships are hard, especially as an introvert. But just know that there are people out there who care about you and want to see you succeed.
Side note, I just joined your discord! Can't wait to make so many new writer friends

ana - I’m 19 and australian as well, we’re in the same boat! I’m always feeling like I won’t be able to publish internationally, especially because my manuscripts are always so rooted in australian places and culture that it wouldn’t be understood internationally, whereas if I were american it wouldn’t be a problem hahah. It’s definitely discouraging :( but we’ll get there!! we’re young and learning and have so much time!
you could always look into self-publishing as well. you get so much freedom with it and you already have such a great platform of potential readers :)

The waiting for fish to jump in your boat analogy proves everything I need to know about who you’re going to become. Stop worrying so much!!! Stop being like a little kid who’s only excited before they’re spoken down to, keep the kid in you while enduring the adult life stuff. Be like, there and you’re like ok let’s see how much this world can try to make me cry and go home and lets show them how undaunted I am at what usually stops other people from continuing. Be that!!!!! You got this you got everything stop stop worrying!

I dont do a lot of writing personally, but I do like watching videos of the writing process and your channel was piqued my interest because of that. Overtime, I grew to be really invested in your journey as a writer and was always checking up on your videos from time to time and cheering for you to succeed. So to come back and see you discouraged by the challenges you are facing makes me sympathize with you. Although I genuinely appreciate you being transparent in your journey, I want to encourage you to keep going. Although I can't relate to these specific writing challenges you are having, I can relate to that feeling of loneliness and hopelessness when faced with an obstacle in the way of your dream. You are right, it can be lonely, frustrating, and you might even get to the point of self-doubt and fear. But even in times such as these, this is your opportunity to power through. Everyone who dreams big goes through times such as these, but only those who persevere are the ones who succeed.
You can do it Ana. You clearly have a passion for writing and I know your light will shine through one way or another. You are an inspiration to all of us to chase our dreams. Don't lose hope. We are all cheering for you.

I think it´s admirable how open you have been in this video, thank you Ana 😊
It´s certainly difficult to show your story to the world. It´s something you have worked so hard for and got so attached to that you´re almost giving a part of youself away.
I´m sorry you have past through that (i would give you a huggg :) 🥺
I´m also a student and aspiring author and i understand the struggles of not been able to write many times a week. But that´s okay! We have to study and do other things and it´s totally valid to write whenever we can! The important thing is to do what we love and persue our talent!!
You know? You gave me an idea! In a few years, i may create a space for young writers to publish their stories, regardless of length or genre!
Thank you for all your encoraging videos, including this one. They are so helpfull and touchy.
P.S. : I would definitely buy proyect ghost if you end up self publishing!!

You mentioned at this start of this about not knowing any Australian authors - my mind immediately went to Graeme Simsion. I know a different genre to yours (and technically born in NZ) but his Rosie books are incredible (award winning and optioned for film). Maybe worth seeing if bookstores nearest you ever do author signings, and then you can ask them questions about how they got published. Libraries also sometimes have a local authors section. Either of these are worth checking out, trawling the acknowledgements sections of their books to see who their agent is.
Feeling your pain, I know querying is where I'll go eventually but I'm tapping up self-pub first to try to build an audience for my books and then leverage that in my queries.

Hey Ana...I feel loneliness all the time when I write. Not only writing, even other creative things such as designing, painting ,reading ,dancing, you name it. I do understand the bad side of being a writer. My friends doesn't even care to read whatever I wrote, not even a page. They don't even read anymore, which we always do. I don't even see a way that I can publish my books, also because I live in somewhere like Australia, where I don't feel like there's many authors here. I watch you videos because I can relate to you better than other authortubers out there. You're doing great, even through the pain...❤️

Watching the first clip of your vlog nearly broke me 😭 as someone who is sort of in the industry- I’d like to offer my two cents. But please please take take them with lots of grain of salt!! 🙈
    1. I agree with the comment you mentioned in the video! Most agents are looking for full length novels! Not a ton of traditional publishers will publish a novella unless the author is super well known. And that’s usually after they successfully sold full-length novels. In any case, almost all literary agents are looking for novels. For novellas, what do you think about considering small presses? There are a lot of independent presses that will publish your novella for you! The process is quite similar (pitch, synopsis) but you’re pitching to that indie publisher and not a literary agent
    2. When I query, I’d like to make sure the book is finished and as polished as possible! Agents aren’t necessarily only looking for ideas, they are looking for writers who know the book they are writing (genre and age category), writers who know how to finish a book, and writers who know how to take on feedback.
    3. There are plenty of Australian writers who are traditionally published through literary agents! I recently read a book written by Vanessa Len who is an Australian author. Also Shelley Parker-Chan is also an Australian author and her series she who became the sun who has been Hugo nominated and also won many awards!
You’re doing great!! Take your time and enjoy the books you’re writing ☺️

I feel this, like being grateful you are living where you live, but you just feel your hopes crumble sometimes when you see how most big authors come from the UK/US (I'm from Germany, and while my parents and friends see the potential in me and the way I use my words, I do feel like I keep on self-sabotaging especially because I'm scared I'll a.) never finish because of my habits breaking of ADHD and b.) my story is boring and not marketable c.) the place I live in (Germany) and writing in English and then ever being recognized is sometimes feeling like im delusional or like i just genuinely suck, so yes I feel you kind of.)
