THANK YOU so much for the time and effort you put into this awesome video. Not only was it a pleasure to watch but it offers great information for those of us who will be riding the Pass for the first time!!
I currently excersize from Cumberland to the Brush tunnel and then back. One day I will head to Frostburg but I get exhausted once I reach Willowcock Road.
From Cumberland to Dakota Ave. is the usual Sunday bike ride for my dad in I all summer long because we are so busy, but when we aren't busy we ride from Cumberland to the Brush Tunnel and come back. I've only ridden the trail from Frostburg to Cumberland and I also have done Frostburg to Wellersburg, PA. and I've been on the trail from Rockwood to Myersdale, PA. Some people have said that the Great Allegheny Passage starts at PNC Park in Pittsburgh is that true?
Yes this all down hill very little pedaling required (a real fun ride). However you will pay for such an easy down hill ride when you pedal back to Frostburg. The return trip takes twice the time, just pace yourself, gear down and take as many rest stops and needed. It's all fun pedaling in both directions, Enjoy
ETCruzer We decided to park in Cumberland and get a shuttle from Cumberland to the Deal Trailhead. After a slight uphill from Deal to the Continental Divide, all downhill to Cumberland!!
Hello Everyone, I have a question, since I just learned about this Frostburg - Cumberland, MD Train/Bike Route. Is the bike trail "Downhill" from Frostburg to Cumberland, or "Downhill" in the opposite direction? Thanks. If anyone is interested, another really great Bike Trail, is "The Virginia Creeper Trail".com located in Southern, VA, on I-81, at Exit 19, in Abingdon, VA. Check out the website. This is a 34 mile long hard-packed dirt rail-bed, and "The Flat Section" 17 mile section runs Eastward from Abingdon to Damascus. (Damascus is located on Hwy. 58.) There are 7 bike shops in Damascus, and all of them offer shuttle van service up to Whitetop Station, where the 17 mile down the mountain section begins. The first 3 miles are at about a 6% downgrade, and then the next 10-11 miles are at about 3-4%. The last 1-2 miles are flat back into Damascus. The shuttle we use is "J C's Outdoors Bike Shop", which is located at the far eastern end of Damascus, which means it is the first shop you come to upon the return trip to your vehicle. (There's also a great ice cream/Yogurt Shop across the street!) Shuttle fees are usually $15 per person, and about $13 with a group. You can also rent bikes and the shuttle, with a helmet, for about $25. The shuttle ride takes about 45 minutes, and even with stopping for photo pops and lunch at a great restaurant which is located about 3/4 of the way down the Trail, you can get back to your car by 1:30 or 2 PM. "Die Hards" can park a vehicle at The Trailhead in Abingdon, as we do, and bike to Damascus, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The trail serves about 250,000 visitors each year, and is especially crowded during foliage season, so I suggest using it on Mondays - Thursdays if you can. WARNING!!! If you try this trail out, you will DEFINITELY want to do it again....and again....and again. Also, real "Die Hards" and many "Locals" choose to ride it both directions. This season will be our 10th year in a row that we have done it..... Two other highlights are that the upper section crosses The Appalachian Hiking Trail, and repeatedly crosses The Upper and Lower Halsted River.... Enjoy! (There is a good Holiday Inn Express in Abingdon, at Exit 19 and I-81, which serves a great breakfast. There also is one bike shop in Abingdon, located just down the street from The Trailhead, and all of the shops offer shuttle service between Abingdon and Damascus, for those who want to do the full 34 miles....) From the Frostburg train station you'll enter a switchback trail that takes you down to the trailhead and from there it's an easy enjoyable downhill ride all the way to Cumberland. You'll Love It!
I did this ride twice now starting at Deal and Meyersdale respectively. Gorgeous ride. Thank you for sharing!

Born in Frostburg. Miss what it was. But it is still pretty cool
Nicely done. I lived in Cumberland for 38 years.
Awesome! You got footage of the train! I actually got to ride in the cab of steam locomotive #734. It is $225 per person to ride in.
excellent video. What a fun ride it is. I did it this summer and plan on doing it again next year but without video.
This is great, I have been biking on the C&O but my wife and I have been wondering what the GAP between FB and Cumberland is like. Thanks..

@caddisart I'm not sure ask ETCruzer it looks like a GoPro to me.
I've read that this is essentially all downhill? Is that true, and is it essentially minimal pedaling from Frostburg to Cumberland?

The uphill isn’t so bad, is amazingly smooth.
