Bit of a correction on your statement about helmets not being designed to stop pistol rounds. An NIJ IIIA helmet is designed to stop up to a 44 magnum fired at around 1400 FPS. This information should be published in the open in what's known as a V50 Ballistic Test, and a Ballistic Penetration Test. While there is (unfortunately) no NIJ Certification for ballistic helmets, you should still be able to obtain NIJ test results from any manufacturer, as all helmets should be tested against the NIJ Standards. Your results with the subsonic .22LR are indicative of a fiberglass helmet wrapped in two individual layers of aramid. Those two layers of aramid are more effort than most of these knock-off brands usually use. You're also shooting near the crown, which is supposed to be the strongest point of the helmet because that's where the material is the strongest. It's a shame that Google and Meta allow these companies to falsely advertise their products in this way. We've been speaking to them about this for what feels like ages now. Always check for publicly published NIJ test results from an accredited 3rd party lab when you're looking at helmets. @@KarstRats suppressors don't slow down bullets and they don't net you less range. Subsonic *rounds* are slower and have less range. Suppressors actually increase your muzzle velocity by an amount dependent on the round fired and the overall barrel length. This happens because they create a longer channel for the powder to propel the round, just with a bit more dissipation than an equal length of barrel. If you had a 14-inch AR shooting .223 supers at 2600fps, and you threw a 6-inch can on your muzzle without changing ammo, you'd expect velocity gains something in the ballpark of 150fps. An unsuppressed 20-inch barrel could launch the same round at 2800-3000fps. Faster than a 14+6in barrel and suppressor combo, but said combo is still faster than an unsuppressed 14-inch.
@@shaunnormandy yes. They do. Surpressors ultimately push more gas backwards instead of letting the projectile capture it and turn it into velocity.
That's why surpressed guns have sooooo much gas that comes out of the ejection port and around the charging handle.... That pressure change because of gases moving to different places does definitely slow a projectile down.
Not SO cheap. I mean, you can buy a small sheet of titanium for 200 bucks, and beat it with a hammer to a sort of shape. You would waaaay better with that than this.
I couldn't agree more!
Who could've guessed? A 179$ helmet doesn't work. Wowee. Color me shocked.
$199 helmet does though. Handgun rounds anyway. Botach/Longfris ballistic helmet. It's cheap chinesium but it works. Back face deformation is pretty severe though.
