I wasn't clear in my description during the video so I'll pin this up front. All the original backgrounds from the arcade are still here. The alternate backgrounds you see are optional. This is also not "zoomed in" as some have hypothesized. The characters look larger because of the differences in resolution. Finally, there are no special techniques being used here that couldn't have been pulled off in 1994. This should have been possible with a decent team of developers back then, even with a development cycle of 6-10 months. This work was done mostly by one individual as a passion project.
A while ago I was thinking, with my limited knowledge on game development, that if 3DO got a port back in 94, it wouldn't have turned out nearly as good as this guy's excellent work. But i'm glad to know that I was wrong, and that the 3DO would've had the best console port back then. But at least we're potentially going to have it once this is finished. Serious props to the guy that did this!
Amazing work man! After all these amazing ports for Saturn and 32X released by the community I really felt the 3DO deserved more love! Once it's finished I wanna make a custom disc, with box art and all, of your port, I wanna have this gem sitting with the best games released for 3DO, Road Rash, Gex, Need for Speed, etc. In my entire collection the 3DO is my favorite 32bit console! :)
Hey 3DOHD! I just ran across Sega Lord's X review was hoping you would've saw it. Glad you did. I did the beta on my channel yesterday and, I've got to invest in a Wireless controller adaptor for the 3DO, trying to do moves with the Goldstar Controller was a pain. And the Sheng Tsung morph was flawless. Congrats sir and keep it up!
I don't really care about Mortal Kombat but I will say that the scrolling in this is extremely impressive for the 3DO. Plenty of overlapping parallax layers at a full 60fps. That's something Street Fighter 2 Turbo couldn't do. It's also something Gex couldn't do.
To add onto my individual comment, the issue here is this was made in the 2020s and optimized to the max, where youre comparing games that were made with primitive technology with deadlines and budgets. Of course with modern modding/editing tools and what not, a game could look much better than its counterparts that were official releases decades ago. That's my main problem with anyone trying to compare, it's just not applicable or fair really.
@@Moneytakerbaby Thank you. This 100%. Making games look good today using modern programs and hardware without any time limitations is not a good comparison to what the game would of looked like if it was originally released back in the early 90's. To think the 3D0 could of done something the Ps1 and Saturn couldn't do back in the era is nonsensical.
Yeah, especially some of the enhanced backgrounds. The portal stage has a really cool pseudo-3D effect on the platforms leading to the portal that I don't think is in any other version. It looks awesome imo.
I remember owning an FZ-10 that apparently fell off a truck in Staten Island New York and my uncle just so happened to find it and give it to us. Mazer and killing time were my childhood. It was a very fun console.
For sure. That tech at that time with a more traditional pricing/profit structure could have changed everything. If they'd launched at $399 or less, and had perfect ports of Mortal Kombat and DOOM by 1994 backed by the major EA software like Road Rash and Madden, 3DO could have become a major force in the US.
My older brother and I chipped in a pay check and bought a FZ-10 model back then. We played the shit out of Wing Commander 3, Wolfenstein 3D, and Road Rash. Will definitely check this out once its done!
I played this yesterday on my 3DO via an ODE. I agree with your review 100%. The uniqueness of this port is fantastic and should remain intact. It has fun new combos and idiosyncrasies that make it a joy to play. Liu Kang, for example, can do his flying kick in the air. So, in the corner, you can get this combo: jump kick, air flying kick, bicycle kick, crouching low punch, uppercut. Good times!
As a 3DO kid, I was so hyped when I read in my Gamepro magazine hat UMK3 was set to release on 3DO. I waited & waited & waited, then nothing. After how good the SSF2 Turbo port was, I thought UMK3 would be great! This is the first I'm heading of an MK2 port, but that would've been great too. I actually grew up playing MK2 on MS-DOS 😅
I was so jealous whenever I would see a 3DO ad back in the day, I could never afford it back then. You’re 100% right, it was such a beast of a console, and had some really good games.
Most systems were held back by timetables more than lack of hardware. This is so true with what we are seeing with new games coming out on classic systems.
I was lucky to live close to a mom and pops video rental store when I was a kid in the 90s, the owner was a major gamer, he had every console available to rent at the time, everything from the SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, 3DO, Saturn, PS1, etc even the CD-i, to rent for $10 a night including a game. I was able to try all of these consoles out as a kid thanks to that place. Its too bad more kids couldn't experience the 3DO at the time without shelling out a lot of cash.
I always think the Saturn port of MKII deserves the mod treatment from some talented Sega fan. The game really LOOKS top notch on Saturn, it could just do with sound restoration and some performance tweaks.
If Mortal Kombat 2 were officially ported to 3do back in the day, I'm pretty sure it won't be any different from the ps1 or Saturn version.. or even worse if it were released during the early 3do launch day because nobody don't know how to optimise the game on the console yet

Yes, the TG-16 was actually a very capable console, SF2 runs great on it. NEC's north American marketing division did everything wrong. I would have packed the console with a 2 way splitter and an extra controller, with Bloody Wolf as a pack in game. Rambo and Schwarzenegger movies were at their peak back in those days, Bloody Wolf was one of the most awesome shooters on any console at the time, I am positive the TG-16 would have flown off the shelves and smoked the SNES and Genesis.
@@ImWithTeamTrinity I don't know if it would have smoked both of them, but it certainly could have given them a run for their money, the PC Engine did finish 2nd that generation in the Japanese home market. I remember NEC did a local mall tour with the TG-16 back then, I played Bonk's Adventure for at least 30 minutes straight, all while wearing a Super Mario Bros 2 T shirt, the NEC staff must have had a laugh with that one.
I love homebrew games made decades after the end of the system's commercial life, because the people making them tend to know the system inside and out and can do things official developers couldn't have dreamed of.
We are using the same SDK and recreated toolset that devs had back in the 90's. 3dohd has only been programming 3do for 2 years. He's very new to the homebrew scene.
This is an example of why consoles started to just rush to the next thing. Imagine developers took the adequate time to build and learn and develop, to each consoles maximum experience, modders and developers have proven the sega and snes and PlayStation and Saturn, all got ended for the next big thing, before they had even begun to scratch the surface of its limits . They think they hit its limits and move one, but they hadn’t come close to its real limits. It’s just something I think about pretty often, like we are getting talk of the ps6 already when they imo havnt even begun to get close to the full potential of the ps4 let alone the ps5
Great to see the old 3DO getting some love! I had one back in 94/95 and a very good collection of games, It was a very good console I had a great time with it and I'll never forget Wing Commander 3 one of my all time favourite games. Shame the system was actually ahead of it's time and of course way too expensive but I loved it.
If the IA is not like the arcade, that's an improvement IMHO. The arcade IA was ass, designed so that would loose by the second or third fight at most. It reads all your inputs so it can perform the perfect counter atack before the atack has even begun. Plus, it straight up cheats, being able to grab you from distances or in situations you would never be able to, cancel moves you can't and get up instantly. There was a video on how much it cheats on you making you feel you are just terrible at the game.
I'm glad you touched on the gameplay being so different. I haven't seen anyone else mention this yet so far. It is definitely very much its own version of MK2. But that isn't a bad thing!
THIS LOOKS AMAZING! Mad praise to the Dev team! The Pit II fatality looks so damn good 👍. Love the background tweaks, I'm sure putting in a few different codes to play as Smoke or Jade wouldn't offend the purests! I know I wouldn't mind, 😉 Great job, guys!
Can you imagine if this had actually been released back in the day on the ol' 3do?? But then again the love poured into this version has no comparison.kick ass!🤘💀
Regarding your VRAM question... The 3DO has 2MB of DRAM and 1MB of VRAM. The thing about the 3DO's design though is that VRAM is not needed to be the place where CEL graphics data is stored. Only the framebuffer memory is really required to be in VRAM and any data you wish to use the high performance copying of VRAM (SPORT). Assets can be stored in DRAM and VRAM. We certainly haven't been able to ignore RAM limitations though.
I love seeing ports like this. The 3DO was really powerful, ahead of it's time to say the least. I wonder how a port of MKII for the jaguar would've stacked up to this?

Agree! Incredible port! And all these new alternative Backgrounds(Arena). Specially i like the background with the 3DO Covers! LET IT BE ITS OWN THING!!!
I reckoned they lowered the price out of desperation to increase sales, was a reasonably powerful machine for it's time, but just didn't have the games to back it up.
If they only had released this back in the day when everybody made fun of me because I sold both my Genesis and SNES to buy a gameless 3DO, things would have been different.
it comes to my mind the conversion of the first Street Fighter for pc Engine CD... also, it was made with a different gameplay than the original cabinet... And Also in that case the developers did an amazing job because finally the special moves of the first Street Fighter were non longer random generated.
If they manage to fix the AI from input reading, that's better than the arcade version in my eyes. I always disliked older Mortal Kombats AI would just read the inputs.
Don't care much for Mortal Kombat, but I can't help but being impressed with the work shown here. I wonder how they got all the arcade assets - did they manage to extract them directly from the arcade roms or did they run the game in MAME, stepping through every animation, ripping frame by frame?
Totally agree with you. We don’t need another port of the same gameplay. We all know the exploits by now. Good for the devs to make their own play style.
one of my most 'wish i could go back in time'' is refusing a brand new, sealed, with 5 games 3DO for $150 from a friend's shop who got the 3do by mistake. The sender said it is a hassle to take it back and my friend only needed to pay for fees and shipping and labor and paperwork, and that was $150 if with the games. He was kind enough to tell me he has a ''Black playstation that he needs to get rid off at the store'' and i said no....i weep to this day, but even so, $150 was a lot of money back then, so i do understand why i said no....still, this bugs me over 30 years later.
As u say killer software titles make or break a console I was a day one buyer of the 3do and had lots of fun with games like the horde , gex , road rash , need for speed If only Konami and acclaim could of got some amazing ports it could of helped
Mk ii's music and level design make it so iconic, classic and nostalgic. The new mks are to much of a super hero vibe. Mk 2 seemed like an advancement of 1 on some erie sci fi kung fu tournament stuff. The tune right when you input a fatality is so dope. And the little jingle after you do is also. I just wish they had some type of combo system back then similar to 3. Just to make replay value now a little better.
I believe that the 3DO was not only more expensive when ignoring inflation (Neo Geo AES: $649.99, 3DO: $699.99) but was still more expensive if it's included.

If they only had released this back in the day when everybody made fun of me because I sold both my Genesis and SNES to buy a gameless 3DO, things would have been different.
😂
I never made fun of you bro but thanks for the Genesis you gave me, I traded it in for more SNES games.
Looks great and those backgrounds are fantastic!
UMK3 almost got ported to the 3DO back in the day.
This looks like an awesome port!
I will not make be thorw out my SNES version but what I tryed under 3DO emulation I liked.
It’s not even worth bothering with the 16 bit versions of MK2 now with this 3DO port existing now.
The change in the AI is for the better. I despise Midway's philosophy of the player exploiting the AI to have a fighting chance.
it comes to my mind the conversion of the first Street Fighter for pc Engine CD... also, it was made with a different gameplay than the original cabinet... And Also in that case the developers did an amazing job because finally the special moves of the first Street Fighter were non longer random generated.
If they manage to fix the AI from input reading, that's better than the arcade version in my eyes. I always disliked older Mortal Kombats AI would just read the inputs.
They were made to be quarter munchers. It got annoying after a while and everyone resorted to jump kicking.
Don't care much for Mortal Kombat, but I can't help but being impressed with the work shown here. I wonder how they got all the arcade assets - did they manage to extract them directly from the arcade roms or did they run the game in MAME, stepping through every animation, ripping frame by frame?
3DOHD used MK Warehouse. Check it out, super cool website
This is incredible. Imagine this in 94 omg.
I love the new backgrounds. They fit in well with the atmosphere of the game
As u say killer software titles make or break a console
I was a day one buyer of the 3do and had lots of fun with games like the horde , gex , road rash , need for speed
If only Konami and acclaim could of got some amazing ports it could of helped
Need For Speed with 18fps
Dude, this looks unbelievable
