    Passed my class 2 test in November (I started watching your channel back when you passed) and have been driving boxed vehicles, today I joined a agency and possibly driving a curtain sider.
    Went out with someone who done it for twenty years etc and while he showed me I still repeatedly did it a few times until I got used to it.
    For some reason just now I searched for this on RUclips as I remember you did a video and it’s still been helpful even today.
    Whatever has happened to you just remember you helped a lot of new drivers out with your videos 👍

    I was always taught ABC in the military.
    A- Acceleration. Wrap a strap around the back of your load to stop it sliding back through acceleration.
    B- Braking. Wrap a strap around the front of your load to stop your load sliding forward. Use the bulkhead where possible also.
    C- Cornering. Strap over the top to prevent your load from toppling over in a corner.
    Just something that’s always stuck in my head from driver training in Leconfield. 😀

    Its great to hear this advice from the perspective of a relatively new driver. I'm just coming off a 26yr bus career (hint: you don't strap them down!) and started doing 7.5t this week while I'm waiting for a class 1 or 2 job. Seeing how easy you are finding the techniques and also learning as you go on is just the type of thing I need to hear.

    All of this is stellar advice for a new driver. Well done for explaining it simply and being down to earth.
    You're right - when you first start you feel like a bit of a lemon, not knowing how to strap properly and it can feel quite overwhelming as a new driver. But, like you said, unless you physically get to do it you won't learn.

    With iron drain pipes and metal channels that can and have done with me and that is slide out, I wrap the strap around the pipes one on each end and then put one or 2 more straps the normal way and if think it could still slide out I would strap a pallet or 2 upright on front of the load. Slight double over kill but I've had the load slide out before and since I started doing it that way it never slid out again.

    They really need to change how they teach securing a load in driver training in the UK (not sure if it's different in other countries). That little frame gives you zero preparation. With ratchet straps being the most difficult thing to learn (for me anyway) in terms of load security, I feel what they should do is at the start of each lesson (mine was done over a week, so in theory 7 days) have the student demonstrate using the ratchet straps to secure the water bottles or what ever it is. And at the end of the day do the same but unstrapping it. I was literally given not even an hour on that tiny frame thing. It really is a bad way of teaching. Repettitiveness is a hell of a better teacher than a once or twice over.
    EDIT: I just got off my first job today so forgot to mention this when I posted (only a few minutes ago :P) but I ended up putting them through the opposite way round which apparently makes it so you can ratchet it down but can't release them very easily. Why is this stuff not explained in detail?

  • @spiderman01980
    @spiderman01980 4 года назад

    One place I worked before was a nightmare trying to explain to other drivers how to spread the load and use the straps. One guy kept overloading the front axle and time after time I explained to him and management and they just ignored me till one lorry had to go in for front suspension damage as it was severely pulling to left. One guy I explained to, to have the hooks on the outside, every time I got the lorry he would roll the straps with the hooks on the inside so I would have to unroll and roll them up again. Guy just wouldn't listen till one day he through the strap over nearly hitting a warehouse staff and nearly smashing the side marker on the lorry and the warehouse manager had to explain to him the correct way. Place I am at now we are not allowed to check the load and one day I had obout 15 cages only held into place with safety bar, sometimes there's no safety bar. Guy that loaded the lorry didn't know how to use them and I don't think he knew what the straps job was, don't think he realised they were to stop the cages from moving. He just picked them up and started strapping till he couldn't strap no more and I could pick the strap up and hold it about 3ft away from the cages, the one at the back came out of the side and was just laying on the floor. I contacted my agency and made a huge complaint as the company refused to allow me to check the security of the load before they seal it. In places where you are not allowed to check the load you need to make sure that you have requested to check the load and that they have refused you access to the load and it's all done in writing or over email. They need to tell you what method has been used and that it has been done by a trained and competent person.

    • @Deady2012
      @Deady2012  4 года назад

      Very sound advice that! I'd absolutely hate to be told that i can't check my load. That's the whole reason i'm there lol. I need to make sure it's going to get to where it needs to in one piece haha!

  • @spiderman01980
    @spiderman01980 4 года назад

    Today it happened. Did my 1st delivery everything was fine, I check the next lot of cages and the strap that hook on the side of the box and it's a little bit loose so I tighten it. I put the safety bar across that slots into the holes on the side of the box I check it's in properly and it's all good. I get to my 2nd delivery I turn the music off wind the windows down and start turning around and reversing and I can hear this knocking in the back and am thinking it must be the cages at the front moving a bit, I open the shutter and the strap and bar have come off the side and the cages rolled around with the items falling out them and getting crushed. Basically the trailor needs a bit of tidy up as half the straps are broken and some of the slots are bent, I told the transport manager and he says they haven't got any money to buy anymore straps. Can you believe it, cost over safety. Am gonna have to start carrying my own straps.

    • @Deady2012
      @Deady2012  4 года назад

      That's shocking that! Don't buy your own straps. They NEED to provide them. Ridiculous that mate!

    • @spiderman01980
      @spiderman01980 4 года назад

      @@Deady2012 if I told you the company I work for, which I obviously can't for "legal reasons", you would be even more shocked. Yet they sent me to Scannia to get a lorry serviced which in the end they found a fault with and one of the engineers kindly gave me a lift back to the depot as he lives around the corner. Now they waste their money paying me to sit there doing nothing for 6 hours and don't let me mention the distance and time we waste to go and fuel up at one of the main site "to save money", which in the end ends up costing more in wasted fuel and wages. Yet they won't spend £70 on a new set of straps.

    Firstly and most importantly DO NOT make reference to been on tacho break when doing these videos. DVSA will class your videos as OTHER WORK.
    Also straps……some straps have stitching on both sides.
    Other than that…..you gave some really good advice on load security.

    Its Much better to put the strap back through the hole once you get used to doing it every time it becomes normal and it's not extra work.. as for putting 3 straps on sand 2 would do so thats extra one is extra work . New drivers and there ways .. sipple as that you do your way people do there's..

    Advice
    You said you was on your break......you should not be doing anything with your straps or curtains whilst on a break.
    European Union (EU) rules on drivers' hours and working time - simplified ...
    A break is any period of time during your working day when you are not carrying out any driving or any other work. This time must be used just to relax and recuperate. Can I take my break in my vehicle? Yes, as long as you are not doing any other work and are using the time to recuperate.

    • @Deady2012
      @Deady2012  4 года назад

      I was relaxing and recouperating. My way of relaxing is to vlog. This is my hobby. Hobbies are done in free time. Is Marlin fishing 'Other Work'? It's harder than driving a wagon, but let me tell you, when i'm in Bermuda.... I'm marlin fishing regardless of what EU rules say.
      Peace out pal. Thanks for watching.
