You’re definitely not alone man, 10-11 hours a day of nothing but a windshield and the same roads in front of you, you have a week’s worth of thoughts a day. And the podcasts, audiobooks, and music don’t fill all that time sometimes.

I am a rookie here and I was really into a bad depression with constant suicidal thoughts 💭every day , and one day I went to a bridge to jump off because at that time life had no meaning, and I didn’t have much to leave for, My family was all back in Uganda, my wife was bipolar and we kept fighting everyday so the American dream instead became a curse for me.
I couldn’t jump off the bridge for some reason and I remember going inside the house and praying to God, I testify to you all that Jesus healed me from that depression and he gave me new purpose in life that keeps me going everyday. I promise he can do the same for you. “PRAYER WORKS “ JESUS IS REAL and he is willing to help whoever reaches out.

I met you a while back loading poles down in Louisiana. We had a short conversation but you really came as a genuinely good, humble guy. My two cents, when I have feeling like this, I take time away from the truck and focus on me whether it’s a week or a month. Take a break. I enjoy taking my family on small mini vacations, seeing their smiles reminds me of why I work so hard. I also decrease my trucking radius to minimize the amount of nights I’m on the road. I may not make as much money but my overhead is extremely low. I run my truck but it’s does not run me. Best wishes.

The biggest thing I like about driving local is I get to sleep in my own bed even if it's only a few hours a night. I sleep in when I'm on my 34. The 2nd thing is I don't have to eat truck stop food, but the bad thing is I still eat on the run. One thing bad about driving local depending on how some of runs are, it's sometimes hard to budget time to stop for fuel, because you hate to go there when it's busy and you don't have much time left on your clock.

I personally deal with this as well and wanted to share some tips that have helped me along the way. This is still a daily battle with me and will most likely follow me for the rest of my life.
1)Something that has helped me is to learn to love yourself including those faults. Depression and anxiety is a negative but it is also the very thing that makes me a perfectionist, hard worker, and strive for success.
2)People tend to give a big sigh of relief when you talk to them "real". Trucking is full of people trying to be macho and better then other people. It's a breathe of fresh air when someone can talk about stuff like you did. I find the more real you are with others, the better circle of friends end up surrounding you.
3)If you are becoming a truck driver or thinking about taking a leap into being an owner operator. Understand that if you have depression/anxiety it is going to test you a lot. Rushing to get out of the door so you can make sure your on time for a delivery Monday morning after barely having time for your family. Truck breaking down in the middle of nowhere. Months where nothing is going right and everything you touch is costing you money with your truck. Problems at home but you can't be there to help. This is all stuff that will wreak havoc on you mentally and you've got to take time to nurture your mind.
4)I for one have times where my anxiety and depression get the best of me. I've had to learn to make big decisions slowly and make sure I'm thinking clearly. Realize these faults and how they affect your business. Then put yourself aside personally and think about how your mind is affecting the business.

  • @bigbaby4584
    @bigbaby4584 3 года назад +2

Good video my friend. That’s why I tell people get your finances straight so u can live. People have to learn how to simplify their lifestyle because if you don’t it will keep u a modern day slave to the trade The idea is that you do not want to fall in the trap of working just to make money. The more you earn the more crap you buy, a bigger house, a nicer car that is more than your yearly salary etc. And of that has to be maintained which takes more money and then you will want to upgrade which takes even more money. So u then reach a point where u need so much money to keep everything going and eventually you crack and it all falls apart. If we learn to live more simply with less stuff we would need far less money and could spend our lives in a vocation, of which we love doing, with far less stress. Depression comes from your surroundings and the people u be around and what u put in your mind like watching the Media, Negative and Dysfunctional ass people talking about their problems and who’s going to be the next President and your mind takes control of you then it takes control of your emotional behavior and then your mind starts to race and u go into a depression state. Think about it what ever junk that u put into your mind that’s what u will get. You are the one that controls your mind u are the one that puts one feet out and one feet in. The man in the mirror is a mans worst enemy. The only way to fight depression is live your life like u are going to die tomorrow because once u leave this world it’s no coming back ,it’s over.

What three years OTR did for me - crazy high cholesterol, a1c 10.1, blood pressure elevated, weight 285 lbs . Its taken me 9 months off the road to lose just 30 lbs and my get my blood work near the normal range, its all still in the red zone (just barely). And I have always eaten pretty healthy.
My number one recommendation: walk 30 to 45 minutes a day without fail. Power walking even better. And Fix your diet = oatmeal is way better than anything else for breakfast you need the fiber to help absorb cholesterol.
The trouble driving all day, you never want to stop and walk more than five or ten minutes. Better for me to come home every night, use my home gym, eat a super clean diet, shower in my shower. The money wont be worth it if I die suddenly out over the road.
Also, no one mentions this very much but vitamin D deficiency happens because you are not getting sunlight. That sunlight through the glass is not the same as actual sunlight, you have to get outside more often to get in the sun.

I have to praise you for dealing with it like a man.

If you need help with ANYTHING, have the courage to reach out to people who drive who YOU are. "Giving" it to your sky daddy is NOT helping clinical depression. It just keeps it balled. It's something I've wanted to do since I was in high school, and I'm finally taking the plunge now that my kid is grown and we've got some money in the bank. The issues you address here have been on my mind every step of the way while I was researching this career. Thanks very much for this video, and everything you do to inform new drivers. Been there brother. I would drive 2 or 3 months at a time. Begin to become depressed feeling tied to the truck. Found myself developing bad habits. I became someone completely different. I didn't get into truck for trucking. Got in it for the love and once that left so did my discipline. I worked for a few bad companies in a row for about 2 yrs straight. Some family died while in this time, people I promised to come see. I snapped. I didn't care but basically I'm no longer able to do long distance or local because of the stress. Went home to totally reinvent myself without a truck. Trucking became the beautiful girl who seemed nice when you met her but once you started dating, she wanted everything plus your soul. I never attempted to have balance. Even when I should have stayed home, I never said no. Now I'm out of it done. The money isn't great where I'm at like trucking but I go home every night. My peace of mind is returning. I'm no longer trying to justify my mental scars with money. All the missed opportunity for love because I wanted to be out there. I feel you brother. I started a tee shirt company in the truck. Now I'm working to get it off the ground.

I used to struggle with depression from teen thru my 30s. It didn't completely go away after that; it remained as panic attacks. When I came to SoCal ten years ago from Wisconsin, my pastor here was getting his masters on emotionally healthy spirituality. It meant facing the emotional side of Christianity. Up to this point I was just trying to ignore or conquer my attacks, which were happening at least once or twice a month, very draining when it happens. Hearing his sermons, I took that to mean just offering up to God all my emotional Gordian knots. When some one spoke to me, and it triggers a weird subconscious response in my psyche totally unrelated to that person, I would no longer try to understand it, or "figure it out" (I am an INTJ fyi) but simply offer it up to the Father in heaven. I kept on doing that one after the other. Soon thereafter, I realized it has been several months, and NO panic attacks! I don't know whether you are a believer or not. Even if you are not, 90% of ppl believe in the existence of God of some kind, a fairly good God. Try to talk to him, talk to "Jesus". Give him all your dark fears, worries, inexplicable moods, etc. Just keep doing that, and see what happens. God bless and God speed to your place of bliss.
    .
P.S. Do I still get bummed out sometimes? Of course. But they are the normal kind, not the Edvard Munch type "Silent Scream" kind where you are teetering into the precipice of hell. No, I just get bummed out, like normal ppl, and dust myself off, and get past it, like normal ppl. Normal rains, not tornadoes. SIY is also helpful I found. Search Inside Yourself, if you look it up on RUclips, a Singaporean Google engineer tells you the "hows" of meditation. Just another useful tool.

I low level depression but what helped me overcome boredom and burnout is having a goal and a solid plan to follow it up. If you're living paycheck to paycheck, any job will burn you out, it doesn't matter what it is.
A good way to picture it is with Maslow's hierarchy of needs. If you're depressed and don't know why, unless it's a chemical imbalance obviously, you can compare that pyramid to yourself and you usually figure out what is causing it.

I missed out on a lot not being there as much with my daughter. Positive I took from that though was because I was working away I could afford to have a roof over her head at weekends and take her on days out and get some quality time in on the few days I had. I still managed to make a few memories. I’m off tramping now and now on nights. Currently working towards day shifts. These moves weren’t possible without the slog to start off with. Thank you, man.
I came to trucking after a successful 30-year desk career. Was lucky to work from home for 20 of those years. I did struggle with depression- therapy, Effexor, Paxil, then off the meds for about 6 years. Things changed a couple years ago and looked more bi-polar. Lexapro has been great. Meditation helps. Being positive about myself does help, eating right. Career things changed and I’m now scratching my OTR itch. I love it and eat right, cook in the truck. Exercise, not so much... it’s the next goal.
My youngest is a college senior, I’m separated and friends with my wife. We’ll sell the house and divorce in a couple of years. I can stay OTR for months. And I’m comfortable with the pace and staying out. My girlfriend comes out on the road a lot. I’ve got wonderful support, thankfully.
It’s a daily effort to keep the brain focused on the positive nonetheless. Be grateful to those around you and, importantly, yourself. Recognize how hard you work to do the best for those around you. You, me, many of us, strive to rise above the negative without and within. Thanks for this great video! ✌️❤️🙏

Thanks Brian. I deal with depression as you do. The lack of a consistent schedule in OTR trucking has made it harder for me to deal with. I’m far more stressed at home than when I’m working. Before trucking, living a OCD life with a rigid schedule was pretty effective in managing depression. We are all a work in progress. Good luck.
