  • In the quest to get this little old jeep running I’m trying to figure out the fuel pump today. The fuel pump should be a simple accessory on the engine, but I soon found out there are issues. As well as issues when fixing the issues.
    this is not the pump I used, but the one later suggested that I should have used:

    I have a 1965 CJ-5 with the f-head 134 motor. The dual-action fuel pump/vacuum pump was leaking oil. I am not using the vacuum wipers so I just wanted to replace the dual action pump with a single action (fuel only ) pump. Napa sold me the same pump that they sold you (B-0011-P). It didn't work -- too much play in the pump lever before it moves the diaphragm. Took it back, they gave me another one but it also had too much free play in the pump lever.

    Given the age of the Jeep, it's very likely it's lead residue from back when that was still a thing.

    I've never had luck with rebuilt Willys fuel pumps. Had 2 fail right out of the box and another failed soon after installation. All rebuilt in China where they used inferior rubber for the diaphragm. Gave up and installed an electric pump.

    Then there's the fuel pumps with the vacuum on the other side to run wipers on the M38A1's and CJ5's. I like the fuel pumps with the arm so you can prime them by hand. My M38A1 project is sort of at a standstill as I'm waiting for some parts for the T90. I still need to swap the 24v distributor for a 12v, too... I was hoping to be able to drive this Jeep this summer but it might not be finished by then.

    Napa has great mechanical fuel pumps that hold up to the garbage modern fuel. DO NOT GET AUTOZONE OR OREILLYS mechanical fuel pumps. I went through 9 pumps in 7 days the fuel ate the Dial frame and they would just stop pumping or start pumping fuel onto the ground.
    Through the weep hole that was 5 from O'Reillys and 4 from auto zone. Got one from Napa and it's working great 2 years later

    Worn fuel pump lobes are common on 134 engines. They used several different pumps over the years with various spacers and arm lengths to add interest to our hobby. Pump kits are good quality and hold up to modern fuel pretty well.

    Fred dig the vids. My buddy works for a re-man place and the pumps from all cars that have an arm and cam operation, he said always have a little issue with the surface the cam rides on. This came up for me on the same type pump. My fix was silver soldering a bit of feeler gauge to contact surface. this also restored original fuel pressure numbers. hope she gits goin. I dig the flatties!!

    I had to do that too because the old diaphram failed but the new pump valves failed in a month so I mixed and matched and its been good. I think the diaphram just unhooks from the arm when you compress the spring

    So you have a dead hole and are worried about the fuel pump? Am I missing something here? How about deal with the dead cylinder first. I swear RUclipsrs do shit like this just to piss me off.

      Just enjoy the journey 😊
      But my guess is Fred hopes that if it will run on 3 with the plug out and atf in that dead hole, then maybe the oil and the heat will free the rings.
      I think it would be quicker to pull the unit and have the head off, but not my jeep, not my problem 😂

    • @user-ql9xy5nh8l
      @user-ql9xy5nh8l 2 месяца назад

      I’d try to make it run on 3 cylinders and see what happens. Probably not much to lose there, and at least you could say you heard it run once.

    • @SirensC3
      @SirensC3 2 месяца назад

      @@user-ql9xy5nh8l no you don’t understand. I work in a racing engine machine shop. Running an engine without finding out the problem first is taking a HUGE chance in destroying the engine. Those old engines are getting hard to find. They are still out there, but rare. If he blows it up then original engine is destroyed. Better to take it apart and fix the issue than to blow it up beyond repair. Even if he doesn’t care about the engine, someone else could use it to restore another piece of American history. If it was a modern engine then who cares.

    Mechanical pumps push fuel so that filter on the feed line is a restriction.
