Oddly enough, having played magic for five years now it is easy for me to rewatch Iyanaga play and appreciate the consideration he puts forth. Compared to the magic I watched this year at worlds, Iyanaga played better than basically everyone except for Chapin - I do not believe, after revisiting this, that he was playing exceptionally slow like most of the comments lean towards, he just didn't make a single mistake in any of the three games. Thank you Iyanaga for exemplary magic.
No he was egregiously dragging the game out. Game 2 the turn he used the GSZ to get Viridian corrupted he had a very binary choice: hold it for a titan or get corrupter. The latter deals with a creature that would likely not be as vulnerable the next turn and and he had more than enough pressure from titan he already had in hand. This was not a decision that required a minute of thinking and a judge intervention
You can google something like "Current Magic Formats" or something like that and you will most likely get linked to the Wizards website, which will give you a lot more information for what you're looking for. The main formats right now are Standard (Type 2), Legacy, Vintage, Modern, and Block. You'll most likely want to look into playing Standard.
I love 53:35 when Colony is facepalming and the background is zooming out, it's like a visual representation of the pre-game stretching on for eternity. XD
@ORusty222 That could be part of it, the other part is he REALLY thinks about his plays and a couple of turns ahead. That is the sign of a really good player. He has every right to take his time and think things through
but they do have the rule that you have to present your deck inside of a certain time. but i certainly do agree with you. shuffle a proper amount but do it with a little bit of respectful pace.
@deathnotealex But Slagstorm says "Slagstorm deals 3 damage to each creature; Slagstorm deals 3 damage to each player". Since "Slagstorm" is dealing damage anything with protection from Red will not die since Slagstorm which is a red source is dealing damage. With Day of Judgement/Damnation it's not dealing damage, it's destroying. So something with protection from white will still die to Day of Judgement.
@SSxSnazySnipers Probably either a ritual to do while they're thinking, and/or to hide any clues that they might be favoring/waiting on a particular card. To hide if they have a strong/weak hand and which card might be strong.
Iyanaga is a VERY deliberate player. I think that's why he's so good, though. People have their rituals, and he's no different. It takes some real guts for him to take his time despite everyone else giving him crap for it!
@ttayttay What are you even saying? The metagame now is more diverse and varied than ever. You can win practically with anything. So many good cards and decks.
@naejin this is true, i am new to this game and though the trend seems to be control or token decks i am trying out a red-green werewolf deck. suggestions on how to get cards for this deck?
He is talking about activating kessle run and inkmoth to trample over Conley's inkmoth from poision counters post combat damage assuming Conley were to block it..
@stupidtmnet Iyanaga played Galvanic Blast not Shock and Conley only had Etched Champion and Spellskite and Spellskite died because although they didn't show it they announced he slagstormed putting the Spellskite down to a 0/1 until the end of the turn.
They would, because it's even more frustrating to watch it than to participate on it. I understand him, trying to keep it tight, but then again, it's "unfair" play, because you are making your opponent get frustrated on it. If it was allowed, lots of people would do it as a strategy.
I think Iyan is using a old stradegy using Chi/Ki, if you believe in that kind of stuff. And with the time inbetween he's conjuring it to read cards he hasn't pulled
For game one couldn't conley have activated nexus, floated a white with mox, played his second mox tap for a white and his last land for a colourless to play tempered steel? Wouldn't that be game?
You are right, and I am aware of Iyanaga's reputation. I guess, in the end, all we want is clarity. And seriously speaking, you HAVE to admit, psychological strategy or no, some players really rush like assholes.
So, This is my first time watching a pro magic game. A lot of the commentary is about the guy shuffling. I enjoy their commentary, it's hilarious. However they're failing to miss what he's doing. This guy, at the moment I'm watching, is 3-0… He's obviously doing the mind game correct and his shuffling is for a reason. I don't know much about the game, I know this. However I can clearly see what he's trying to do, and it works.
@mlgkadir He knew he was playing against tempered steel. He saw the slagstorm in his hand and figured he probably shouldn't play it just to sweep it away when he would have to play the slagstorm.
@gundamfan555 I dunno why the hell he decided to shuffle so damn much. Our Brit managed to get 3-0 in the time it took for them to do one game AND Shuffle for the second game. That's nuts!
@ttayttay umm... were you not here a year ago when the only deck being played was Caw Blade? Excuse me, but this format is WAY more diverse than the last. What do you expect? For there to be 50 decks of tournament caliber? its too much info to keep up with. This format has at least 5 decks that are Tournament worthy. Isn't that enough? Also, look at the people piloted the same decks....they are amazing players! it may not just be the deck.
I may be wrong, but it seems like Iyanaga was using a bit of strategy from Miyamoto Musashi's Book of 5 Rings. In which I believe it aggravating your opponent before the match can sometimes set the tone for the duel. Examples would be to show up late for a duel. Thoughts?
They don't have a time limit on T8 matches. Everything needs to be done in an "untimed, but still timely" manner. Nevertheless, tanking and whatnot isn't the problem, if you need to take some time to think that's understandable, but shuffling is fucking shuffling, it shouldn't take 20 minutes.
WHY is everybody hating on iyanaga, i mean understand that he wants to play methodically. besides matches usually last this long any who and usually longer so why is everybody bitching.
@gundamfan555 lol to true, it always annoys me, its as if they think that this will change something "Maybe if i shuffle long enough, my deck will transform, into a deck, capable of beating EVERYONE"
ummm, how did Iyanaga have enough mana to activate both nexus lands AND pump for +1/0 via his wolf run at 17:39. I'm pretty sure he cheated and I don't understand how nobody saw this since it obviously takes RG and 1 colorless to pump for that, not just RG....
I don't understand what is it about some of these pros who play like they got to get home to dinner. They play so fast it's hard to see what's going on. As much as it I am impressed with Conley's play, I much prefer to see Iyanaga-san playing simply cos I don't get whiplash watching his play. It makes it nicer and better for newer players like myself to join MTG. Just my opinion.
That was really disrespectful that the judge was pushing him to play... I feel like to play your best you must insure that all your calculations are correct and its douche bag to do that. I give him props for really sitting there and doing all the math and seeing what could happen next etc.
Oddly enough, having played magic for five years now it is easy for me to rewatch Iyanaga play and appreciate the consideration he puts forth. You obviously make a ton of mistakes in magic, stay hating on the goat!!! @rayodios5826
Iyanaga is the best master of Ki ever. Look at all that power emanating from his patience!
50:40 to 55:15 is the most entertaining part. Listening to the Announcers going on Tilt is hilarious!
does anyone else hate the weird faces conley woods makes it drives me nuts
You can google something like "Current Magic Formats" or something like that and you will most likely get linked to the Wizards website, which will give you a lot more information for what you're looking for. "And you can't even Dissmember the titans"
I love 53:35 when Colony is facepalming and the background is zooming out, it's like a visual representation of the pre-game stretching on for eternity. XD
It depends on the format, but yes, you can include multiple sets in one deck.
@ORusty222 That could be part of it, the other part is he REALLY thinks about his plays and a couple of turns ahead. That is the sign of a really good player. He has every right to take his time and think things through
"Remember the titans"
". . .I'm as stunned silent as you were after Conley's win"
im pretty sure Iyanaga plays that slow on purpose to make his opponent get anxious. it really does work.
but they do have the rule that you have to present your deck inside of a certain time. but i certainly do agree with you. shuffle a proper amount but do it with a little bit of respectful pace.
@XchucksteakX your absolutely right! his deck is all about burning away or infecting the hell out of the players.
@anthonyp1010 No, he payed the birds and the dual land to activate inkmoth, then tapped the inkmoth to pump it another.
@deathnotealex But Slagstorm says "Slagstorm deals 3 damage to each creature; Slagstorm deals 3 damage to each player". Since "Slagstorm" is dealing damage anything with protection from Red will not die since Slagstorm which is a red source is dealing damage. It makes sure that your opponent doesn't know that you are playing off the top or that you have been holding something for a while (like a counter).
@ttayttay What are you even saying? The metagame now is more diverse and varied than ever. You can win practically with anything. So many good cards and decks.

@ttayttay how many of those made it to semi? Meta is diverse. Very.
I think Iyan is using a old stradegy using Chi/Ki, if you believe in that kind of stuff. And with the time inbetween he's conjuring it to read cards he hasn't pulled
thx man 9 min intro lol
anyone explain why on turn 1 iyanaga didn't play a birds ?
can u use diffrent series in matches like m11 and scars of mirrodin in the same deck?
For game one couldn't conley have activated nexus, floated a white with mox, played his second mox tap for a white and his last land for a colourless to play tempered steel? Wouldn't that be game?
is there a reeason y iyanaga didn't play birds at the very beginning?
You are right, and I am aware of Iyanaga's reputation. I guess, in the end, all we want is clarity. And seriously speaking, you HAVE to admit, psychological strategy or no, some players really rush like assholes.
i dont know why u people compain about Iyanaga's time - was there a time limit for games??
damn youtube autoplay, howd i get from watching machinima to this?

slagstorm kills all creatures even if protection cuz day makes it destoyed to or is there different ruling
Apparently Jun'ya's suffling is great, it forced conwell to mulligan ahahah
@mlgkadir
He knew he was playing against tempered steel. He saw the slagstorm in his hand and figured he probably shouldn't play it just to sweep it away when he would have to play the slagstorm.
Of course, you think they go through the tournament without being noticed??
@KingCrOnOm my guess was to protect it, knowing he would slagstorm at some point.
@kustomkure I am saying 4 of the top 8 are the exact same deck. That's diverse?
@gundamfan555 I dunno why the hell he decided to shuffle so damn much. Our Brit managed to get 3-0 in the time it took for them to do one game AND Shuffle for the second game. That's nuts!
@TheAngelicDemise True. I forgot they botth got destroyed. I though only the orignial for some reason. Thanks xD.
@SpiteBellow no he knows what to do and he just kinda stalls it
is it a good bleeding or a bad bleeding?
thx that really helps me out. i build a hole deck with m12 and all thoose cards arent that good so thx
this should be on espn
Gameplay starts at 9:45
@ttayttay umm... were you not here a year ago when the only deck being played was Caw Blade? Excuse me, but this format is WAY more diverse than the last. What do you expect? If it's hard to tell It's prolly a good one :D
why can they keep untapping there mana and keep placing mana on the same turn?
@6kOk3 because starting hands don't determine the outcome of the game enough already.
The shuffling is a mind game. Get handled! lol.
9:50 semi-finals begin
post finals then semi finals then quarterfinals? I'm pretty sure that is not the right order....
Why are they constantly flicking their cards in hand?
are those decks 60 cards?? They don't seem like 60 even with sleeves
They don't have a time limit on T8 matches. Everything needs to be done in an "untimed, but still timely" manner. Nevertheless, tanking and whatnot isn't the problem, if you need to take some time to think that's understandable, but shuffling is fucking shuffling, it shouldn't take 20 minutes.
iyanaga looks like he just woke up and got off the bed with that hair
love proxy decks
every player that kicks my ass at magic takes 30 minutes to take their turn
The beginning reminds me of a football playback
how can this posible... winning in 2 turns omg
that was a sign u must play magic !
does anyone know what the land cards are called? the ones that give poison counters
Jomembawang inkmoth nexus
Iyanaga doesn't fuck around and that's why he's pro.
thx
Very interesting
why are threy always shuffling there hands?
to distract people and make them think they have mroe options, but nowdays it's pretty useless as people ignore it.
LYANAGA WHY YOU TAKE SO LONG?!?!?!?
WHY is everybody hating on iyanaga, i mean understand that he wants to play methodically. besides matches usually last this long any who and usually longer so why is everybody bitching.
@TheNethertyp
During the finals match iyanaga mulliganed every hand and he swept the match
I think the japanese term for that is "starring".
17:45 did he just cheat he only had 2 mana or kessig he needed extra one to pump it up?
hey do you know the Jun´ya´s deck ?
50:44 I started to laugh out loud!
Yeah finally :D
@supermanthattay
opal is legendary.
@gundamfan555 I agree with you on that one, makes me look like a fast shuffler.
well if they didn't have a time limit on matches then people wouldn't give him so much crap about it
When Wotc stops showing the face of the player instead of the ACTUAL GAME THAT'S GOING ON, let me know ; ) lol
@gundamfan555 lol to true, it always annoys me, its as if they think that this will change something "Maybe if i shuffle long enough, my deck will transform, into a deck, capable of beating EVERYONE"
why didn't iyanaga play birds on turn 1..
Iyanaga WHY YOU NO SHUFFLE FASTER >.
these guys need a shuffle machine ahahahhd
in the top 8 there is no time limit.
Why do they always shuffle their hands??
good shit
WOW....
This video may be an hour long, but don't be mistaken. 45 minutes of it is Iyanaga shuffling.
Hater troll 🥱
Ok Wizards, I think you need to invest in a top quality shuffling machine so this doesn't happen again...
ummm, how did Iyanaga have enough mana to activate both nexus lands AND pump for +1/0 via his wolf run at 17:39. I'm pretty sure he cheated and I don't understand how nobody saw this since it obviously takes RG and 1 colorless to pump for that, not just RG....
***** oh nm, hm, lolz didnt notice him tap his blocking inkmoth for mana to pump itself while combat dmg is being assigned
I don't understand what is it about some of these pros who play like they got to get home to dinner. They play so fast it's hard to see what's going on. As much as it I am impressed with Conley's play, I much prefer to see Iyanaga-san playing simply cos I don't get whiplash watching his play. thats FUN
the name is tempered steel
Day Of Judgement
Should have had apostles blessing
in these games its not timed.
only in the swiss
That was really disrespectful that the judge was pushing him to play... I feel like to play your best you must insure that all your calculations are correct and its douche bag to do that. I give him props for really sitting there and doing all the math and seeing what could happen next etc.
