Yes and no. One could argue that they're a little less heavy than metal if you're going by what people nowadays consider metal instead of the real definition. Even so, as someone else mentioned, he's done metal covers several times. While I do enjoy a lot of the non-metal songs better, it would be interesting to see how a Godsmack jam sounds when it gets a shot of Leo in it lol.
