  • Roads are for moving people and goods. Personal vehicles aren't a prerequisite to that.
Huh... Maybe I should have mentioned that in the video.
Well, that's what I get for writing this right as I'm uploading this video and rambling at the camera as a first thing. Good news: I'm learning with each new video and these mistakes just mean more clarification in future videos!
What do they call that again? Failing upwards? 😅

Hey Ben! Another Ben here (who coincidentally lives in...Durham 😅) Thanks for making these videos.
So glad to see more and more channels like this popping up, especially from creators in and around Southern Ontario.
Things are changing...slowly...but I still get odd comments when I choose to bike down to the local post office/grocery store that's less than a km away.
By the time I pull the car out of the driveway, I'd be halfway there with a bike, yet that somehow doesn't compute for most people.

Haha another Ben D, too! I approve of our humble world domination beginnings 😆
It's funny because nowadays our neighbours have started biking more so it's becoming even more normalized because Natalia and I are constantly leaving our car behind and choosing to bike. It's a great feeling ♥️
Keep up your biking... ESPECIALLY for those short trips!

They recently put in bus/bike lanes on a major road by my apartment, cutting cars to two lanes each direction. I work from home, but I was initially worried it would make it harder for me to walk to the store up the road if traffic started backing up beyond the traffic lights and ignoring crosswalks.
Turns out, there were just excessive cars on that road trying to avoid getting on the interstate, and there should have never been as much thru traffic in the first place. After a couple months, the flow is much better and it's almost questionable to have even two lanes each way most of the time. Now, if only some of those cars would start taking the bus or walking/cycling.

EXACTLY! This is what happens with induced demand. It's quite spectacular to see it happen in front of your eyes ♥️

I agree that "Bike lanes should not be attached to roads", rather they should be separate, isolated, purpose built and year round maintained transportation networks...unfortunately at this stage of our "evolution" we are so car focused that this is nearly impossible from a financial perspective without completely upending cities. That said, I'm a firm believer that "If you build it, they will RIDE", taking thousands of cars off the roads, negating the need and expense of adding more lanes. Just as the adoption of 'roundabouts' has reduced the number of severe traffic collision injuries (notice I didn't say "accidents"), removing cars from the roadways, thereby reducing congestion and the inevitable risk taking drivers will help save lives, not to mention the obvious health and stress reducing benefits of riding.

Glad you think so! I do truly plan on making more of these (and longer format), I just decided that I need to do a 1-2 month sprint of pumping out content using my literal hundreds of saved clips from the last year. Montreal ones are coming up!
This is being doing while I work on multiple projects for my production company for a bunch of big clients. So it's a lot!
I'll keep on pumping things out and modify my process as I go :)

@@BenDurham glad you didn’t stick to making quality content!!:):)
these neat little shorts have given great insight to the type of person you are. you’re vindictive and narcissistic.
Instead of creating quality content, you would rather use other people as content. Damn shame, you were almost onto something.

Before replying please hear me out and read this.
Bikes aren’t vehicles therefore shouldn’t be on the road. I’ve seen several bikers almost get killed because they’re on the road. I live in London Ontario (the city shown in the video) People in London are bad at driving. Meth heads (who are abundant in London) aren’t fully there and could likely get hit by a car on the road. In London Ontario there are multiple bike trails dedicated specifically for bikes. Please stop disturbing road/vehicle traffic and use the dedicated bike paths. For your own safety and the safety of others also consider people that own vehicles and are wasting time and money stopped because of bikes when they could be in their own dedicated place. Or someone could get in an accident because a biker swerved in front of their car. I see bikers riding recklessly all the time. It actually just happened to me today and I almost hit a man on a bicycle. The world doesn’t revolve around bikes nor cars but there is separate infrastructure for each side!
Just something to contemplate. I do not intend to offend anybody with this comment but rather I would just like to state my own opinions thoughts and concerns with you all. Summary: Bikes have their place and cars have their place. Imagine it like a guy who only plays checkers in a chess club when there is a checkers club just next door. Makes no sense right?! Same with bikes on the road when there is perfectly fine dedicated infrastructure for them. Thank you for reading my Ted talk :) hope this helps (P.S I have no beef with bicycles or cyclists I’m just taking into account convenience and safety)

Here's where you're wrong: bicycles are a form of transportation. You should 100% be lobbying for separate, protected, and dedicated bicycle infrastructure along every single major route around London because people on bicycles need to get places as well. The TVP (trail network) is a recreational trail and takes you on a winding path to nowhere in particular.
Bicycles are literally classified as vehicles.
Accidents don't happen - collisions do.
Please stop disturbing people riding bicycles when you're driving. You have a dangerous vehicle that can travel fast.
Share the roads as the law states.

      @@ilovetheottawasens "So, you're saying..." Brilliant!
Look at it this way...if cities built adequate year round maintained protected bicycle networks, with each passing year more and more people would opt in and start using their bicycle (vehicle) as their primary mode of transport (economic driver), taking huge numbers of cars off the road...leaving more room for close minded FAT HEADS like you. Win Win.
