Lots of great memories listening to many of those albums, as well as seeing a few of them live ....... Black Sabbath Yes Blood, Sweat & Tears Edgar Winter Neil Diamond Yes, I'm old, but those days gave me some amazing memories. Thanks for triggering them!
I saw Edgar Winter OPEN for Yes in 1972, with a new band called "Eagles" performing first... hmm, 'country rock', I thought, that's what Poco & The Byrds already do... 🤔
Great to see Deep Purple having two albums on this list they were on fire in this era. by 1973 they were the top selling rock artist surpassing Led Zeppelin then it all fell apart thanks to the Gillan Blackmore hatred towards each other. Burn was great, but that was it. Stormbringer was OK oddly enough come Taste the band was better than stormbringer and that was not a Deep Purple album.the end of a great era of a great band of that time, the reunion years were good, but never matched those days.
@ talks about billboard charts..doesn’t matter I’m a zeppelin fan as well but purple was every bit as good..I know zeppelin out sold them by a wide margin..
@ANationalAcrobat-qj2dl That's pure opinion and I know some who share that opinion, but personally Machine Head is so much cleaner and easier to listen to. While compared to other live albums of the era Made in Japan was up there, but that's not saying much because great live albums of the 70s is a short list!
@ANationalAcrobat-qj2dl I like it that way too, just not when it drones on and on. The problems is that Machine Head was such a perfect album any variation tends to sound subpar. Live performances back in the 60s and 70s often fell victim to the technology and mindset of the time with performers going overboard trying to display their talent at the cost of a good song. There are live albums that outdo studio version of songs such as Lynyrd Skynyrd-One More from the Road, Bob Seger-Live Bullet, Frampton Comes Alive, etc. Black Sabbath whose first six albums were all solid didn't feel the need to put out a live album during the early 70s and that was probably a good thing.
@@peterjohnson1734 You say MIJ "drones on & on" & THEN you admit that you actually like "Frampton Comes Alive"?!?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Good Lord; I remember I was gifted that album & it actually went in the bin I thought it was so dreadful!! What was it again; "Baby I Like Your Way" or something like that - honestly, mate; I'd rather listen to factory noise but hey-ho, there's no accounting for taste, as they say!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Best regards & Merry Christmas to you.
Surprised that Exile on Main St sold so few copies, but that is a great top 3 albums with Ziggy edging out Exile as the best album from 1972, in my opinion.
Ce disque n'a pas marché immédiatement. Le classement, hormis les "greatest hits" semble crédible. L' absence de "superfly" ou "innervision" est surprenante.
Sales during the calendar year would be a lot different. America's debut album should be on here. Led Zeppelin IV and The Moodies Days of Future Passed were two of the biggest sellers even if they were released in previous years.
Don’t know what sales this is based on but bowie’s Ziggy album couldn’t have done 7 million in the UK as the all time best selling album in the UK is Greatest hits by Queen & that’s sold around 7 million, maybe a bit more nowadays.
Many great albums, but my personal favorite from the that year is "Eat A Peach"- Allman Brothers Band!

That is awesome to hear, I'm getting a bit up there, but I was born in 71, so a few of them I missed out on completely.

Well said, a lot of people don't realize how amazing Deep Purple was . 🙌
Love Deep Purple but it is a myth that they were the top selling rock artist by 1973. Not even close to Zeppelin sales.
@@badgeholderdave that year not overall..
@@ponytrekker8996 No...Zep released Houses of the Holy in 73 and their previous albums were still selling massive ( especially Led Zep 2 and 4 ).

Are these ranked by world wide sales? There is no way Ziggy Stardust was that high in sales in America.
@brucefranklin6295 worldwide yes.
Best album for listening to all the way through: Deep Purple Machine Head (second place: Vol. 4)
Made In Japan was more or less the live version of Machine Head but MIJ was MUCH better.

Brilliant album !!!
I am checking them out this weekend. Thanks for the recommendation!
wrong! number1 is Machine Head - Deep Purple!
Machine Head was their masterpiece!
Had it in 8-trac and album. I still have it. I even bought the reissue on heavy vinyl.
Thought maybe 3 dog night seven separate fools or schools out by alice would be on this list but hard to argue with this list
Schools out is 37 at 1,000,000 ,and Seven seperate fools was at 62 and 539,060 according to bestsellingalbums.org/ Both great albums too.
Hard to believe made in japan released in the last month of 1972, out sold Alice Cooper's School's Out
