7:30 “Pure white, pure jet, pure luxury.” As the no. 2 engine has a compressor stall. 😂
Not a stall actually…
Beautiful plane and beautiful livery. Wish Delta would paint some of their planes this color scheme and bet "old school " livery would be a huge hit!
Many would not give a dam now days airliners are treated like a city bus the golden era of airline flying is gone.
The very first commercial airliner I ever flew on was on June 22, 1969 (5 days before my 10th birthday). It was a Delta Convair 880. We sat in the first row right behind the bulkhead and had a great view of the left wing and engines. They served breakfast with real silverware and my brother and I wore nice clothes because that's what you did back then when you flew. This brings back great memories. Thanks for sharing!
Great story Joel, thanks for sharing! I was 8 in 1969, we were "Feelin' it", for sure.
Classic Airliners & Vintage Pop Culture I wasn’t even born then. My first airplane trip was on a brand new Northwest 747-400. Talk about a memorable experience. We didn’t have to dress up but we were treated like royalty. You were lucky to have been a part of the golden age of jet travel. Thanks for posting this 👍
@@mcdonnell220 so you’re 60 years old
Me to, July 17, 1962
I flew on the Delta 880 many times in the 60s and 70s. If you were on the ground when one flew over, the noise was overwhelming. Inside the cabin, it was quieter than any current aircraft I've flown in. I remember descending into Atlanta on a flight in 1971, and as the engines cut way back, there was complete silence until the landing gear went down.
Too bad America of the fifties and sixties is gone. Never been to it, but I wish I had back then to enjoy civility.
Except that crime was worse then, water and air were filthy, cities were filthy and dilapidated, and there was no such thing in America as equal rights (that's still a problem). However, the world of aviation was fantastic. That was our one area of incredible civility.
zachmatt3 Looks like the world has been losing ita sensible ways; too many rights claimed to the detriment of good conduct.
@@ervinnevesrodrigues818 "Sensible ways"??? What a load of nonsense. You mean like allowing your children to bounce around in the back of a car without seat belts? You mean like dumping chemicals into rivers? You mean like denying bank accounts to women? You mean like separate entrances for black people? And the list goes on and on......... Imbecile.
Such a well made production,I mean that was magnificent
Enjoyed viewing a bit of history from my hometown, remember seeing the fuselage sections all along Harbor Drive back in San,Diego in the early sixties. My dad worked for Convair back then but was involved with the Atlas Missile program at the Astronautics division.
It was Convair's Atlas launch vehicles that sent NASA's Mercury spacecrafts into orbit beginning with John Glenn and Friendship 7. Search "Friendship 7" on RUclips for the film Convair produced for NASA.
This is the first airliner I ever flew on, a Delta flight from Chicago to Miami in 1966.
My first flight on a commercial airliner was in the summer of 1966 when I was 10 from Mia to JFk on a Northeast airlines cv 880. At the time there airline who had unions were on strike so I was disappointed I didn't get to go on Pan Am but looking at this video now I realize I was very lucky.
What a gorgeous aircraft she was!
I hope you can find a similar film about Delta's DC-8s. Delta was the first airline in the world to use the Douglas DC-8.
The bit at 4:00 of the man dropping quarters in the pay phone reminded me of how as a teen then we learned it was important to keep a couple of quarters hidden in your wallet in case you got in trouble and needed to use a pay phone to call home for help. How quaint it all seems now. I can't remember the last time I even saw a pay phone in public. Do they still exist anymore?
I want to go back to the 60's!!
Brett Bass I remember "dressing up" to fly on an Airliner (old Turboprops) when I was a kid. Good Times! The early 1960's were the end of an era in America...
lol at 7:37 mark the #2 engine coughs :P
Xenomorph1320-D yea what was that? Lol
That's a compressor surge....a characteristic common with the General Electric CJ805 Turbojet engine which was purely mechanical and not computer controlled.
ow i thought it was a bird or something
Simply Awesome!Who ever presented this,I LOVE YOU!!!!!
Great plane. Never flew on one of these but got to ride on a 990 - also a great plane.
Just fantastic... Awesome video.... Love the flight.... Really beautiful.... Lovely air hostess.... Golden days.....
Dang. I'm only 12, a 21st century kid. I wanna fly on these planes. They look so comfy. Food looks scrumptious. Planes are so cramped these days.
SupercarsGaloreCA spend hundreds more and get a first class ticket.

I flew on a 880 in 1965 going to New York to catch a flight on a Loftleidir CL44 to Iceland and then to Luxembourg. Now those where great times.I also was on a 990 but can not remember the airline but I remember the over wing fairings that I believe where called carrots by some. I remember the atmosphere was one of fun, adventure and excitement with great service. Contrast that with domestic airlines today and its not so much fun anymore, but its great to remember how it used to be.
Wow Mark, would love to hear more! What did you think of the CL-44, and what was that like?
I had a window seat aft of the wings and when the turbine engines started you did see a flame in the exhaust which seems to be common on a turbo prop but back then I found it disturbing. The flight departure was late at night. There was prop noise and some vibration but once cruising altitude was reached everything settled down. It was still much smoother than the Embraer Brasilias I have flown on. Lofleider Icelandic used the CL44 for several years and then they leased Seaboard World DC-8-63's that I also have flown on and of course much smoother except takeoff on the 63 in cabin rear was noisy. Service was of course excellent.
mark cross
Thanks that's great, always loved Tigers CL-44s when I was a kid, still do.
Either Delta or TWA, Japan Airlines was the only other carrier buying them. You likely flew on the TWA. Sadly the idea of being the fastest didn't sell, only 65 were produced between 1959-62
+mark cross, Convair's parent company, General Dynamics Corporation, also owned the CL-44's manufacturer, Canadair, at the time. Today it is part of Bombardier Aerospace and would develop the famous CRJ regional jet.
The 880/990 line was and still is the most beautiful commercial airliner ever. And the fastest. But it was also too small, very noisy and very smoky. Delta used to fly the 880 out of New Orleans airport and right over my house just three miles away. Even inside the house you could tell an 880 was coming by the shrill sound alone.
Flew one of Delta's 880s from JAX to ATL in August 1966. We were an hour and one half late getting off the ground due to some sort of mechanical problem. Barely made my Eastern 727 to STL and then had to run across the apron to catch my already spooled up TWA 727 to MKC (it was a different planet 53 years ago).
My first assignment with Delta Air Lines, flight engineer on the Convair 880.
After flying on Stratocruisers and Super Constellations to cross the Atlantic, to this day, it amazes me that the time to cross changed from 27 hours i in 1954 to 7 hours in 1960 to this day.
Then to 3 hours for a few decades starting in the 70s with the Concorde.
Loved this. Thanks for posting.
Back when flying had not yet degraded to Greyhound with wings. Pax wearing coats/ties and ladies dressed like they were going to church instead of flip flops, shorts and tank tops.
Flew on Delta's 880 out of Houston to NYC. One of my favorite airliners of all time, right behind the VC-10
I remember take off from kai tak in 1969 on a Cathay convair 880. Back then, these aircraft were never 'cold and dark' unless during maintenance. The Convair 880 was very profitable for Cathay but the one I flew in, shuddered, clanked and rattled up the runway under spool up. It was a different time and cabin maintenance was secondary to mechanical and airframe maintenance. The 880 was one of the reasons that Cathey remain in the air today.
Elvis choice of airplane!
Love this aircraft!
A Wonderful aircraft to ride.
I was oboard of DL 880 between LAX & DAL in 1963 that set a world's speed record.
Played cards on that first class table on the way to Vegas!
Things change, not always for the better.
The film makes it look pretty nice. They've sold me; I'd fly on it if I were alive in the 1960's. I've been flying since 1971 so the 880 was before my time. I grew up with AA 707's, 727's, DC-10'S, and 747-123's.
Beautiful! Thanks.
In these old days, stewardesses projected convenience, competence and decorum. Quite different from the childish cheerleader routines that Southwest flight attendants perform. Not to mention the usual flight deck-based comedian that every SW flight seems to have...
If it bothers you so much, then don't fly SW. Maybe Air Koryo would be more to your serious nature liking.
Okay granpa
Elvis Presley's personal Jet was this model the 'Lisa Marie'
At 2:02 that's DC-8 wing, not a CV880
Delta was first with BOTH the Douglas DC-8 and Convair 880.
Now, that travelling hubby would know that his wife would have to leave for the airport 30 min. before he called to stand a chance of meeting him for a pick up. Wonderful and nostalgic list to a time long lost.
OH MY GOD!! No meal cart!! Just running back and forth, up and down like we used to do!! *SIGH*.....so long ago!
At 7:37 did I hallucinate or did that engine let off a puff of black smoke?
Yep, a characteristic of the CJ-805 engine. :-)
Puff? It would stream smoke trails till you could no longer see it. I miss the smoke...love the loud and smokey engines. Good Times!
A compressor stall; common in early jet engines. Usually accompanied by a good bang, but usually harmless.
They were all dirty birds back then, check out the videos of 707 take offs, from behind the camera losses most of the aircraft image because it is blocked by black smoke. The 880 came from the km per hour speed of this bird, it didn't sell unfortunately, such a terrific aircraft
I never flew on a Convair. They must have been retired by the time I took my first flight at age 5 in 1968. I wish I'd had the chance. It sounds like it was a fine aircraft.
💚 All the best and continued success, God willing 💚
Good luck and success, God willing 👍🌸 Great video
@MrShobar, you're right about that, because Boeing beat Convair to the punch with the 707-derived 720. While many claimed the 880/990 as the fastest, especially given the speed of the delivery flight of Delta's first example, the Boeing 720 was actually faster, with a maximum cruising speed of 640 mph, 25 mph faster than 880/990, and that is in actual service. GE also had to be sent back to the drawing board because the 720's improved Pratt & Whitney engines were much more efficient. Lockheed ended up buying most of Convair's assets.
Great company and airline
I love Convair 880 because it is fast and short 🤗
Dam!!! are you kidding me? The whole dam flight looks like all first class.
America was first class back then....
I thought the same not a big difference between cabins. Other than the Club Cabin. Plus the two by two seating throughout.
the food looks gooooooooood
Only 65 880's were built. 37 990's. GD sustained the largest financial loss of any corporation up to that time due to these two programs.
880 "Smoky Joe". Smokey engine exhaust. Although was well liked by pilots and passengers
I don't know if it's the music the way people dressed to travel but all of sudden i miss those days when my only concern was bringing good grades to my parents.
"Pure white, pure jet, pure luxury" - *#2 engine flames out*
Guys, can anyone tell what the music is that is used in this film? I know it's used in a bazillion promo/educational films from the era, and would like to identify it. Thanks!
Classic Airliners & Vintage Pop Culture Good chance the music used in this Convair 880 promo film came from the Capital Records "Hi-Q" Production Music Library.
The Music is Micheline by Philippe Parès et son Orchestre

nice wish i was part of those days do u know what song is in the backround?
Real usa ended in 60s
This was Elvis Presley's personal jet called the "Lisa Marie"
Was the 880 really that quiet? It looks lik ethey put the engines as far away from the fuselage as possible.
Interesante y muy hermoso video histórico que deja en evidencia que el Boeing 707 no fue el único que marcó hito en la aviación comercial mundial. Saludos desde Chile 2021.
Yes, lets all relax push back your seat and light up that cigarette in the comfy confines of a medium size jetliner. Life's good for you now.
Elvis loved his
October 8, 2014 marked what would have been the 125th birthday of C.E. Woolman, founder of Delta Air Lines. He was quite a man and watch?v=jDmEfzYsPE has a brief lookback at the life and career of this aviation legend. Also, Delta recently dedicated its newest Boeing 737-900ER (built in Renton, by the way) in his honor. watch?v=jIVgBkFIVU0 has highlights of that ceremony.
1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley CA at 0:10
11:02 but at least we have biscoff now.
DE LOS MEJORES AVIONES OK...
The Convairs were only five-abreast in contrast to Boeing and Douglas six-abreast, which made it faster, but less economic. Blame Howard Hughes for insisting his TWA fleet was so configured.
which is what appears in the minute 7:35??
This jet could do a barrel roll
I wonder if that aluminum insulation was a form of Mylar that is very flammable.
Most likely
Could you make a video around cargo aircraft (a jet one and a propeller one)/
Have a few up with cargo birds...check out "Air Freight Promo Film" - 1960 for a good start.
Also, check out: Classic Airliners - "Freight Dogs!" - 1973, also on my channel.
7:36 compressor stall
Use of P&W JT-3D fan eng's would have changed the whole story about this airplane.
At least l can still see one at Elvis,s house
It only went away because it was burned too much gas - four engines.
5 across seating was its doom. Economics
Nice looking aircraft. Wish commercial flights flew that fast today.
L. A. To New York in 4 hours.
TWA used the Convair 880 on its transcontinental routes mainly as a supplement for its Boeing 707s.
@10:58 you can see how much food they got. we dont get half as much now on flights. some flights you dont get anything at all
I got six ounces of ginger ale and a bag of rancid peanuts when I flew Delta in 2005. The chair shaped my back into the letter 'C'.
A VOYAGE BACK TO THE SIXTIES!! AT THAT TIME AMERICA HAD, AT LEAST, 5 JETLINERS MAKERS!! TODAY, JUST BOEING!!!
Airbus may be European-based, but it now assembles those A320 family jets in the U.S., in Mobile, Alabama to be exact.
A champion gas hog that no one wanted to buy. The 880-990 series resulted in financial losses that nearly wrecked GD.
Old smokey
CV-880、0系新幹線みたいな機首だ!
No Seat belts and friendly flight attendants....
Elvis bought one and had it refurbished
Didn't Boeing come up with the same design?
Problem over 5 hour mission lucky to save 20 min mach 0.87 to 0.90 for 20% less payload and endurance
Poor man's "Concorde."
I'm surprised with the safety overkill trend that flying is even allowed.
Yuck...Cigarette smoking in the plane... Those were some disgusting times to fly in...
Well, that was a load of BS! But it was certainly a fast aircraft.
Back when Delta was a proud airline and one of the best in the US, now it sucks balls...
It's better than UA and AA..
Delta isn't any better
+Francisco Sevila I mean, they are rated the best US airline by Sky Traxs.
+Francisco Sevila Well I mean, it's better than taking a train or bus.
+Gino Zagarrio considering that in the US, the standards about airline service are quite low
Same aircraft as the one owned by EP named Lisa Marie.
