I’ve lived here since 1972 and the change is incredible. I worked in a law office in the 80s and one of my duties was to get the mail every morning when the post office was in the first floor of the old federal courthouse. Santo Trafficante was a frequent sight. Always flanked by a James Gandolfini type, but very polite and soft spoken. One morning I was leaving and he and his bodyguard were about to come in. I held the door open on my way out (not out of fear, just being polite) and he and the bodyguard both thanked me. From then on they both greeted me. All the clerks said he was always polite. Skyway bridge accident happened my senior year of HS. The planters at BOA (you’re checking one out at 5:27) were added after 9/11 to thwart any attempt to crash a vehicle into to the glass front. We now have 7 County Commissioners, because when we only had 5, 3 of them conspired to vote for whoever had the cash. They always voted together, and your development project would happen only if you greased their palms.
I swear to God, when I was a kid about seven or eight years old me and my mother we’re driving by and I saw the Bank of America building, and I said “ mom do you think anybody would fly a plane into that building? And she said no that would never happen four days later that’s exactly what happened .pretty crazy. True story.
@@GrantScottJr I’m not really sure. I guess because 9/11 happened shortly before this? I’m pretty sure some time has passed when I asked this question. I’m not sure. I always did weird things like this when I was a kid.

The scariest thing about Tampa is how much sex trafficking occurs. Breaks my heart 💔 I don’t like to go out at night unless it’s with a responsible group.
Been in Tampa since I came from Germany at 4 with my mom and adopted US air force dad back in 58. So basically grew up here and except for a few years in the Army been here ever since. So I do remember those stories. I am a remodeling carpenter and was working just off of Bayshore when the plane flew into the building. I drove Bayshore to and from downtown to jobs i was doing in south Tampa. That day I was way down near MacDill AFB and went home via Dale Mabry so didn't get to see the clean up. Did see the hole until they fixed it later. I never knew he was a nut though. I always thought he'd done it accidentally. I also remember the skyway incident and remember the debris in the water. Very sad. The murder was probably the darkest happening you talked about. I drove by the park a lot when we were building houses down in the Bay to Bay area. I gotta believe other towns have happening as bad or worse. Now with the mass shootings, they pretty much dwarf the stories u mentioned. Its quite a world we're in now for dark tails. But thanks for the revamp.
One additional bit on the Oba Chandler piece is that after his execution he was tied through DNA to another murder of a girl years before that he slashed her tires in a parking lot and kidnapped while pretending to help her.
You must be younger than 42 if you never heard about the Skyway collapse! HUGE story for months. Awful. The bus alone took well over 20 lives, including an infant. I was in 8th grade at the time…in my memory, it wasn’t foggy, it was a torrential storm.

I think there could be a video for just the mob history of FL. Fun fact: Trafficante's lawyer claimed that he hinted that he was the one who had JFK killed! How's that for a fun, silly ol' fact!

80 years old on May 8th we left the house as the sea fog was rolling in going to Bradenton spend the weekend with my mom's best friend. Camping and swimming in the Manatee River. Her friend as we showed up was hysterical to see us arrive my she rushed my mother into the house to show her what was on TV. You missed Al Capone's house in the bootleggers tunnels you also missed the Ybor City Cigar City mafia. Not to mention Eileen Warner the serial killer. I grew up here so maybe I know quite a bit more but one thing that you did touch on as I worked at the ice palace I was sitting in the restaurant called medallions of the Ice Palace eating our employee dinner looking out the windows towards the Bank of America building I actually watched that Cessna hit the Bank of America building just prior to it I brought other employees attention so people started looking out the building by saying that plane looks like it's flying a little low. The kid was actually buzzed over MacDill Air Force Base as well they were about to take it out of the sky. Some fun facts you may have not known.
I wonder what this man did working at that law office. I’m a paralegal and often think about different careers and wonder what I’ll be doing at his age.
One Dark Side you didn’t mention is the amount of suicides that happen on the Sunshine Sky Way. A lot of people have lost their lives jumping from that bridge!

I just moved from Tampa, born and raised, I knew all but one! My mom actually worked in the Bank of America building at the time!! The days inn story was on forensic files btw! I was watching it and saw where they were and was like Omg
I was also driving two blocks away when that happened. I was looking at the Coast Guard helicopter that was following the plane when it hit. It happened on the West side of the building so it obscured me seeing the impact. It was a Saturday if I remember correctly.
Bob Graham taught at Miami Carol City Senior High. For a semester, which inspired a friend of mine to teach. I’ve met with him several times throughout my teaching career (27 years so far), and I think he’s the last decent governor Florida ever had.

I used to be afraid to go over the sunshine skyway bridge! You could view over the side while traveling over the bridge! I mean you could see straight down! And i felt it was rickety! Imagine my surprise to see the news the next day!!!
We love what you’re doing @Tomdnyc 👍🏻
Tampa has tons of Mob ties, an entire underground in Ybor City and in the 90s, a small part of the city known as Sulphur Springs, was the most violent place in the entire U.S... You didn't even come into the city, that was all stuff surrounding the bay and St Pete. There's waaaaaaaaay more dark stuff in this city...
Where does NYCTom wear his "bucking 🧢"?...over his "Buccaneers"! 🤣
At the end of the day Tom is just a standard snowbird.
... from Tampa/St. Pete.
For the algorithm because Tom’s content is amazing and he deserves a like/comment.
Actually, in some parts of Florida, it’s “Let’s hit the Huddle House!” Same layout and food, just different name.
Interesting stories! Did you say Margaritas? My favorite drink! I'll take my Cadillac margarita on the rocks with just a little salt. lol🍹🎉🎈 Have fun!
Dude, when you were on Bayshore Blvd. you mimic being either dead or asleep on some stairs. That was the official walkway entry of my high school, The Academy of the Holy Names. All Seniors have a class picture taken right there on those steps. My picture was taken many years ago as I graduated in 1992. I still live in Tampa….liked this vid a lot!
I came to see if anyone commented about the Academy of the holy names shot 🤣 what a gem
Btw, gonna ask, where on Long Island is Tampa ?
Get off at the Mineola LIRR station and drive for about 19 hours.
@@tomdnyc1
Sounds like an "On the Road with Tom & Lucy" video "Dark Side of Interstate Bathrooms: Hairy Bar Soap".*
(Of course, being a stand-up comedian you're joking. From Mineola Station to Montauk is only 2.5 hours. Then the world ends.
Haven't you seen the 1999 movie "The Thirteen Floor" ? )
Thanks for the reply
Ahh, the bushcraft Tom ... 21:28 pelican ? ... egret, at least didn't say lawn flamingo or jockey :)
yea, wtfc
Thanks for the scenery & tour
Good stuff, you should include the tampa winn dixie fire of 1983 in palm river tampa 5+ ppl died by billy ferry pouring gasoline on ppl then lighting it up scary and sadly.
My parents were on the northbound span of the Skyway when the southbound span was hit. My mom was pregnant with me.
Grew up South of Gandy. Enjoyed the video, but surprised there was no mention of Sam Traficante, being a true crime video.
Always a good day when Tom uploads! Good job man!
The Boat that the murders took place on was purchased By Obba Chandler from a lifetime Family Friend of My deceased Uncle. I don't know how long Chandler had ownership of the vessel prior to the Murders, but the Family Friend was interviewed (By Law Enforcement) about Chandler at some point during the course of investigation. The Family Friend had no prior knowledge of this man. He just answered a call from a response to an ad he posted to sell his boat. THAT BOAT! Talking about a freak coincidence!😬
Dude, I haven't seen any of your videos in my feed in over a year. Yes, everyone says howdy. It's usually "howdy, howdy" if you're glad to see someone.
Thank you for the stories!
The BoA plane crash was a lil traumatic and I can see my condo building from where you’re standing on Bayshore!
Thats actually not Tampa Bay off of Bayshore Blvd… Thats the Hillsborough River
Tampa native, we actually sing a very popular Tampa song "Ms All The Way Live", it's a classic record from here but anyways I say that to say I'm Tampa to the core and these are all news to me!
Yooo! If you enjoyed the video, come to Tom D's Big Florida Show on Saturday, 1/20/24 at Coastal Creative at 7pm. Thank you so very much sir great content smart video thank you 😎🇺🇸⭐🤙
Wooo I grew up in St.Pete and found your videos a year or so ago because I love NYC. Hopefully you do a part 2 someday, maybe the Seminole Heights killer or Stephen Lorenzo.
He should have said "You're executing AN innocent man."
We use 'an' rather than 'a' when the word following starts with a vowel.
Always a interesting video Tom, thanks for posting. Nice farts! Are you ever coming to Toronto?
One day I would love to make it to Toronto! You had me at "nice farts"!
Omg what is the name of the park in the beginning??!!!!
Did you work at Holland & Knight? just a guess
What about Tampa's very own serial killers Oscar Ray Bolen and Bobby Joe Long?
Tom, to quote my abuela, you are a hoot! Good thing that you aren’t still a lawyer. I love the videos, especially the dark side ones. Keep up the good work 👌
I was living in Tampa when the plane flew into the building. It was really bizarre to see that plane hanging from the side of the building. You could do a whole episode on infamous Tampa murderers. I can think off the top of my head of Bobby Joe Long, Hank Earl Carr, Oscar Ray Bolin Jr, and Billy Ferry. There are many, many more.
You totally skipped the toll booth operator at the sunshine skyway pier that drove his SUV off the end in 1999
John lehrero wasn't the captain of that ship, he was the harbor pilot in charge of the ship
I don't know why you haven't got more subscribers? This is a top notch tourist video!!!!
I live in Tampa since 97. From Newburgh NY. I remember that plane dangling out of the BOA building
Could you do a strivers row in Harlem I'm retiring there great videos
Well, you're in luck. I covered it here - ruclips.net/video/bTO7pPBkrdo/видео.html
Thanks bro
Aw. Welcome to my home state. Love ALL your videos, because I've been in NYC since 2010. I wanna now that history. Hope you went to Busch Gardens...
EDIT: omg you are from Florida!!!
Live in Tampa and Temple Terrace Florida for nine years now. All these stores are new to me. Thanks friends. Amen 🙏. From Williamsburg Brooklyn.
You forgot to mention the human trafficking in Tampa…it’s considered the baggage claim
"last meal, 2 salami sandwiches?, what's wrong with you?"
That was so funny. Your intro to off screen to get followed by camera. Haha!!!!
Welcome back! 🙂
Welcome to the sunshine state! Love your videos of NYC!
I’ve lived in Tampa for my whole life (20years) and never heard of any of these stories
@Anthony McFarlane Facts💯 bro never heard of these stories at all
I wonder what this man did working at that law office. I’m a paralegal and often think about different careers and wonder what I’ll be doing at his age.
One Dark Side you didn’t mention is the amount of suicides that happen on the Sunshine Sky Way. A lot of people have lost their lives jumping from that bridge!
That's almost still an everyday thing. My son in law works on the skyway now and talks people not to jump on the daily
At least they put up jump barriers now. Btw I knew someone that jumped. He had lung cancer and it got to be too much.
This guy dancing on the graves of the people in that bus that drove off the bridge: 🕺🕺💃🕺💃🕺
What we all want to see is the Tampa Tunnels! Maybe do an RC car cam or something!!!
The bus that fell into the bay from the Sunshine Skyway had two people on it that were on the run for bank robbery in Miami. They both died that day.
Accutane and Mama could've gotten a bunch of players with some pillow talk, Pixie-dust like was done to me in my teens. My face was like the Rocky Mountains in winter.
26, born and raised in tampa and didn’t know most of this!
I just moved from Tampa, born and raised, I knew all but one! My mom actually worked in the Bank of America building at the time!!
The days inn story was on forensic files btw! I was watching it and saw where they were and was like Omg
I was driving thru Downtown when that happened. The Police hadn't even arrived or were just getting there. When I passed. It was crazy.
I was also driving two blocks away when that happened. I was looking at the Coast Guard helicopter that was following the plane when it hit. It happened on the West side of the building so it obscured me seeing the impact. It was a Saturday if I remember correctly.
He's at the tree that's been knocked there forever
Boy, 2 Tampa lawyers, you and Mike Lebron who became comedians.
You should Do Another Story in Tampa Florida I have plenty of stories
I love this it was so funny and i love learning history ab my city!!!
The guy in the first story, went to my high school, a few years earlier than I did
Bob Graham taught at Miami Carol City Senior High. For a semester, which inspired a friend of mine to teach. I’ve met with him several times throughout my teaching career (27 years so far), and I think he’s the last decent governor Florida ever had.
My friend Tanya from Burbank moved there three or four years ago they love it
I live in a lameass crazy state I’m fixin to head to Florida myself one of these days. lol. Tempted to anyway.
I moved from NY, suburbs of the city, Rockland county, to Tampa Bay area in the 70's
You should look up about the mafia in Ybor city and planning on killing President Kennedy in Tampa and the bay of Pigs; also go to Nebraska ave and check out that area and the stories of affluent and the athletes that lost it all up and down that area, Tampa is seedy AF
Tampa native here
I was born here listening to my father tell me mob stories he came here after three Korean war my mother moved here after ww2
I used to be afraid to go over the sunshine skyway bridge! You could view over the side while traveling over the bridge! I mean you could see straight down! And i felt it was rickety! I told my my and dad , one day this bridge is going to break or just collapse! And a few years later it was hit by that barge or whatever it was , and it broke and all those lives were lost!
I remember telling my mom , i hope I am not on the bridge when it collapses, i know that sounds selfish now!
Woahhh my city??! The one where I was born and raised and currently in rn 😨?
