People are saying that the black and white fisheye shot of Kendrick and the family is supposed to mimic the style of spy cam footage. Drake is spying on the family trying to dig up dirt but all he's going to see is them happy and dancing. Not sure if that was the intent but I can see it. No such thing as overanalyzing a Kendrick project.
I always thought of it more literally. I imagined it to be from the perspective of an actual fishbowl, as if Drake finds the concept of a happy family so foreign to him that he cannot imagine it accurately, and skews things because he’s so alienated
11:47 Just before he said Malibu most wanted we got the shot of the helicopter which are historically used to search for wanted criminals. Such an underrated placement I never noticed.

Just to let you know jordan: the city scenes are based on kendrick's music video for king kunta! Pretty similar premise, go check that out if you loved this
Also his first video Compton state of mind which featured the city hall also I believe. Full circle moment. Was out there solo now he got the town behind him
I love all Dave Free's MVs. Dave and Kendrick have such clean cinematic authetics in their videos. Family Ties, N95, Count Me Out, Rich Spirit and now Not Like Us are all extremely artsy and stylish imo
Also all the Kendrick videos under TDE that say by the ‘lil homies’ are also directed by Dave Free and Kendrick - that was their name as a directorial duo. DNA, Humble etc.
@@rosagonzalez4739 Thank you! I'm surprised how few people know that, especially since _the little homies_ are among the greatest music video directors ever! I'm always shocked when people are shocked that Dave & Kendrick directed the vid...
Jordan just to let you know, Drake said kendrick beats on his queen so when kendrick says family matters it cuts to his family and his wife then his wife is just dancing on him. So when it cuts it’s very impactful

Here is what I love… you don’t know about the beef, but every edit point is an exaggerated pointed diss from Kendrick to drake.. this is so awesome to watch !!!!you
Kendrick is pulling out all kinds of analysis English Literature professors Psychologists Composers Preachers Metal heads And now film editors ???! What a bounty. Drake could never
This was great. The wire thing was such a great catch. Your reaction to the owl being caged just made me realize that we watched KDot commit murder in front of the world and we all just danced to it 😂
start of the video: "Hey guys today we're doing an analysis of the editing and the camera work on the video" end of the video: "Drake's cooked" I love that ending part, got a good laugh
Congrats on doing a second channel. Usually, I think western MVs often play it more safe than Kpop ones, but it's excellent to have you identifying the works that try (and achieve) something impactful, just like this Kendrick video.
MY JAW DROPPED when i realised why theres so much use of light and contrast in this mv.... black and white... kendrick and drake. holy shit this video is an onion.
14:25 According to New Rockstar's breakdown of the video, one of the guys (I think right) was in a car accident not long before but still danced for this lol
Fun fact: On 6:24 Kendrick did 17 push-ups cause Drake prefers girls under 18 cause they are still Minors and he doesn't go for anyone 18 and up because they are technically already an adult 😨🙃
Did the knock that Kendrick does at the start actually have a name? It’s called "Shave and A Haircut Two Bits,” which comes from a minstrel song called “A Dark Town Cake Walk.” And no, it's not a dessert recipe or a funky hair salon! "A Dark Town Cake Walk" refers to an African American town, and the "Cakewalk" was a dance that enslaved Africans did in a mocking way to win cake as a prize from their enslavers. So, next time you hear that line, "Atlanta was the mecca building railroads and trains, bare with me for a second let me put you on game," you'll know the backstory!
The tracking of the hand reminded me of the Nerdwriter's video on David Finchers directing and camera work and it is forever altered how i see media, it truely is art and a lot of work goes into it and David Fincher is a genius.
learning about any sort of art/skill/trade makes it so much easier to appreciate it simply for the work that goes into it. love the video and especially how you go back to talk about each detail!
since you have ties to roddy rich and some west coast people, maybe they can set you up with dave free one day cos they're all pals and you get to edit on a kendrick video in the future :) that would be fireeee. btw if you pause at 20:10 there is roddy in the background dancing LMAOO
the thing that's fun about watching you break this down is how the things you point out are basically tying into most of the major shots kendrick is taking, but without the knowledge of the drake/kendrick beef to know why these moments are so good with the whole narrative of the song and the wider commentary it's making about the whole back and forth. it's even in the small details in the shots like how with the a minor line he holds that a bit longer than is comfortable, and so does the shot with its angle as kendrick dances off screen. The line, the set, and the shot all line up to say "Ok, yeah, i know i'm kinda dragging this out by now but let me do this victory lap and we'll all get to enjoy this banger of a track." Watch a lyrics and video breakdown on this track for the lyrical shots and video cameos, it all ties together so goddamn nicely.
Man This is first time watching your channel. I'm already enjoying this. I love how you teach really amazing stuff while actually enjoying it. So good!❤
9:47 that line had multiple has multiple meanings: ”Tryna strike a chord and it’s probably a minor” 1) Strike a musical chord, a minor chord, A Minor 2) A minor child
I am kind of considering going into editing and I think it's a great thing that I found this because I can just learn more about editing and camera work.
at 19:40 the wide angle is probably a 360 cam that was edited to look like a crazy wide angle, people in sports use it a lot to capture the right stuff at the right time. also Redbull uses it a lot in there vids cause u cant really afford to miss the shot and with a 360 cam you can see everything and just edit it to look like a regular cam after.
I cringed as I clicked on a white man reacting to ‘Not Like Us,’ but you’ve delivered soooo many new insights for each minute of watch time. Wow. Thank you for this video.

That, or it's like someone looking through a peephole into an apartment.
It’s because drake is accusing him of doing smth to his wife
Oh shit I never thought of that

I’ve seen countless reactions for this video and this one is my favorite by far. It was so satisfying to my inner nerd.
I love the way you basically didn’t comment on the beef itself, except for explaining the owl piñata, until the shot of the owl in the cage.
Never paid attention to ANY of these details. Thanks for the education! 😊
The WOP cuts are also a nice reference to what they did editing wise in the Pop Out concert.

The opening shot isn't City Hall - its the MLK monument and the Compton Courthouse
