Motorcycle Rear Brake Pedal Adjustment

- Here's how to adjust the rear brake pedal level on a motorcycle. You can see more about my Harley-Davidson FXR at hoohoohoblin.com. Setting the brake pedal level on your motorcycle increases your comfort and a safety. If the brake pedal is too high, you will ride with your foot next to the pedal, and when you need to stop, you have to lift your foot up, slide it over the pedal, and push down. If you know how to adjust the the pedal downward, you will be able to ride with your foot on the motorcycle's foot peg with your toes right over the rear brake, and when it's time to stop, you just roll your foot forward. This isn't just a Harley-Davidson how-to video. Most motorcycles have a similarly adjustable rear brake pedal. Take the time to make this change, and you'll be more comfortable riding your motorcycle, and when it's time to panic stop, you'll stop quicker. Ride Safe!
Bro thanks so much for this video you saved me from having to spend money at the shop again. It was the same for my 2007 1700cc yamaha warrior. Thank you man!
You’re welcome
You are the man. Bought a vstar and knew in a minute that I didn’t have the range of motion to cover the brake. I too need to do more yoga.
I’m glad I could help. For reasons I don’t understand, most motorcycles come from the factory with the brake pedal set way too high.
I did notice, in the first day of riding classes with the MSF, they DO have you cover your brake pedals because they want you to be able to stop on a moments notice... Great video, BTW!
Was riding my New TO ME Sportster today and having the exact same issue with the brake lever being too high. Good to know I can adjust it so easily down a bit as I was thinking that would solve the issue for me..
You and me both... I have a full pedal on my FLHTC and it was pretty high... I adjusted it right after I got it because of the same reason! Glad others are able to share the info on how to fix this stuff...
Thank you! Wanted to do this the first time I rode it and never did, now my new exhaust is hitting it.
You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.
Thank you so much, I just got my first bike and I already adjusted my shift lever to be higher but now needed to lower my rear brake lever. I was keeping my foot over the rear brake lever but it was very uncomfortable for my ankle muscles to have to keep my foot angled up, this way I don't drag the rear brake and cause my engine to work harder. Thanks!
You're welcome. I'm glad I could help.
My crf 50 and 80 both had the break pedal too low. It taught me how to use the front break better
I have this same issue on a suzuki blvd m50. Thanks for the video.
My 87 fxr did the same thing and didn't change heighth at all... I adjusted it to eventually made it so the brake never even gets pressure to the caliper
New rider here, just the vid I was lookin for! Also, what brand of boot is that. Thx for posting.
Thanks!!! I don’t know if those boots have a brand name. They are the ones you can get for $25 at big five sporting goods.
I wish there was an adjuster on my 04 Sportster brake pedal.
Great video! Unfortunately my rear brake is too far down, and it seems like it's as high as it can go /:
Excellent video! I'm going to see if I can do the same with my Triumph! Thanks!
You're welcome. It will make you more comfortable, and you will be able to stop quicker.
Excellent! Thank you very much! Ride safe.
david hall You're welcome.
great video. Is it the same for the gear pedal??
Awesome. Great video. Thanks bud!
You’re welcome.
Simple. But, GREAT VIDEO
Thanks!
Thanks for making vid
You’re welcome
I notice that there is not a master cylinder by the rear brake pedal. Most HD's do and I am puzzled how to bleed the rear brake since the does not seem to be a master cylinder to add brake fluid. Does the one on the right side of the handle bars work both brakes for bleeding front and rear? I noticed the FXR looks somewhat like my 98 Road King. How do you bleed your brakes or replace brake fluid. Thanks for any help you can offer
Hi, I read in the shop manual there are specific height measurements for the brake lever. 4 1/8 from centerline of the pivot. What you're saying makes a lot of sense, but I'm just curious why Harley recommends otherwise.
I don't know. I figure that if I have to lift up my foot, and then put it down to stop the bike, that takes a lot longer than rotating the pedal to a position where it is always right under my toes. so that's what I do on all my bikes. Whatever speeds up your reaction time will keep you alive on the street, so I'd vote for that vs. what the manual (written by corporate lawyers) says.
Thank YOU!!!!
+Daniel Greene you're welcome.
My back break pedal is loose ! A lot of side play. looks rather scary... Got any ideas ? or will what you showed fix it ?
Sounds like the bolt holding it on has come loose. Check it. If it is tight, but it is still moving from side to side, you could put in a washer with some grease to tighten it up.
It didn't have a bolt.It had a ...C clip snap ring...That came off....But Thanks !
mine is actually low so I will try the reverse of this. thanks.
You’re welcome.
is there anyway i can lower my brake pedal even more, as you see i have size 15 feet uk size. so it is down as far as it goes but its still way to high, is there anyway way of lowering it even further, thanks
+callum kelly It depends on how the linkage it built. You might be able to use a die to put more threads on it, so you can tighten it more, or you may be able to heat up the brake pedal and bend it. On my Royal Enfield, the foot pegs are adjustable for height, so I can raise them up, which makes the brake pedal seem lower.
its a wr 125 x yamaha so its really hard to mod the lever though
Does this work on any bike or only the sportster?
Yes. Most motorcycles have a way to adjust the brake pedal height.
hoohoohoblin I chances it and onfortiniatly mine is welded :( (jincheng Knight)
So you drove it for 18 years finally decided to adjust the pedal the gripe about people upgrading instead of adjusting that’s what I got from this
gday mate could you tell me what a 11ml & 13ml are in old money eg 7/16,1/2 inch etc thanks>
Not sure what you mean. Metrics and American sizes are different, slightly bigger or smaller than eachother. You can sometimes get one to halfway fit and work, but you risk damaging the bolt.
Thank you!
i presume it works the other way i.e raise the pedal if you have to?
Yes.
great
Thanks.
👍🏽
im not a mechanic but the harley adjustment shouldnt be 11 and 13 mill. it all should be standard but metric will work
What a dumb question bro... obviously you need to do more Yoga i mean the bike is never wrong. 👌👍👍
