    I was given two peace lilies last weekend from a neighbor moving away. From your videos I recognized they needed some rehab starting with repotting. The bigger one didn't have a drainage hole but luckily wasn't rotting. I don't think they have ever been repotted and the roots totally filled the pots. Took forever to loosen them from the ancient soil. They are both in new "houses" with fresh soil and recovering in bright indirect light! Looking forward to new blooms and healthier foliage.

    but if you are concerned with the Dust coming from the perlite then a normal hygiene mask isnt gonna do anything against it. im a potterer who sometimes has to work with/around dust. and only the special "dust masks" actually filter it out.

    I’ve been watching your videos and learning a TON! I figured you would be the best person to ask if you wouldn’t mind helping me out? I’m looking for information on what soils to use for the plants I have. If you could include brands that would be a bonus!
    Specifically I have aloe, money tree, garden croton, Venus fly trap, sand rose succulent, angels wings cactus, lace hedgehog cactus, and a corn plant. also have a huge round cactus that I can’t find the name of. I do have pictures of it. If you could help me out I would be forever grateful!!!

    • @Letycs
      @Letycs 2 года назад +30

      The mixture she uses here is good for a lot of plants even if it's just soil/perlite/bark or wood chips.
      In general, aside from the fly trap, you want well draining soils. Brands don't really matter and I personally use different ones. I just look for any plain all purpose soils with those ingredients. I prefer little to no fertilizer in it if I use my own fertilizer, if not it's not a big deal.
      The fly trap is native to swampy marsh land and has very small roots, so they can be a little picky about water, if it has too many minerals the roots will burn, but they prefer really soggy soil at all times and bright direct sunlight. A lot of packaging gives poor information on them because they want you to kill them and buy more. I used tap water on mine for a long time because I couldn't be bothered to use distilled or reverse osmosis water, lol. I left it in the soil it came in, but I think any potting mix without perlite/wood chips that stays moist and clumpy like dough will work. Sphagnum moss can be used if you keep it moist as well. I'd recommend putting it under a dome to give it a terrarium-like environment.
      Over watering tends to kill more than anything, so a well draining soil will help prevent root rot. Standing water or excessively moist soil on a regular basis will cause root rot. Over watering has nothing to do with how much water you give your plants and everything to do with how much water your plant is retaining. If you're worried about over watering, some plants like the peace lily will tell you when they need water. They get all droopy. Some get duller, like spider plants. Or you can just stick a long skewer into the pot and if it comes out clean, it's dry. If it comes out covered in wet dirt, don't water, it's still wet. If you're still concerned, just don't water until your plant looks sad.
      Aloe is like Snake plants and probably only needs to be watered good like once a month or every two or three weeks. Mine isn't doing hot because my cat likes to rip its limbs off. 😅
      I recommend spider plants and pothos. They are really versatile and can be grown even in water or in less light. Of course they'll do best in dirt and good light though. My spider plants give me tons of babies every year and pothos come in a bunch of different beautiful varieties.

    • @Letycs
      @Letycs 2 года назад +5

      @@BarenakedplantsbyKerri No problem, I know it's a lot, but it's most of what I know. I've had a ton of plants for a few years and often bring clippings of new plants to my grandmother who loves to garden so she can have some too.
      Almost forgot to mention, if you dome the fly trap, just make sure there's ventilation. It's not super necessary to dome it, but it may help keep moisture in which is why I recommended it, but I know a youtuber that grows a variety of carnivorous plants that doesn't.
      And if you have fungus gnats or are worried about bacteria on cuttings when you're propagating, just dip the cut end in cinnamon or sprinkle a thin, even layer on top of your soil. Natural fungicide/anti bacterial.

    • @Kath-Erina
      @Kath-Erina 2 года назад +4

      For all your succulents and cacti, Aloe and snake plants (basically all plants with thick leaves, they store water in there), I recommend a little bit different soil mix, they are naturally desert plants (as opposed to many house plants are jungle/more tropical plants) and like dry sandy soil mixes! It's still pretty simple, just mix one part potting soil with one part sand (from a playground or birdcage/terrarium sand) and one part perlite! Et voila you have a perfect, sandy but well draining potting mix with a little bit of nutrients in it from the soil. Hope this helps 🤗

    If I tried to do what you do inside my house or garage, I would spend more time cleaning up than the whole repotting process!

    Do you have any experience with LECA as a planting medium?
    That's what I have all my plants in now and I was wondering if you had ever tried it.

    So you fill the plastic plate thing at the bottom with water instead of pouring water from the top of the pot the plant is in?

    What happens if the plant gets too big? Like, the pot it needs is too big. Or would it stop growing at a certain point/take forever to grow that big?

    Is one drainage hole enough for such a large pot? I just repotted my big monstera and I’m concerned it won’t get proper drainage

    Ok so we have hat this potted lily same plant as yours I believe. We have had it since my great grandpas funeral probably almost 20 years ago. We haven’t reported I believe and I don’t know how many times a week we should be watering it. Any advice?

    I do potting on the lawn. Any mess gets worked in by the next rain or mowing.

    I didn't understand the two inches bigger than thee root ball part?

      It’s so the roots have some wiggle room to grow while avoiding any chance of root rot. If it’s too big, and if there’s an excess of wet soil around the roots, they’ll rot eventually Bcz the roots can’t absorb the water.
