A very complete video Harry on "hitting the sweet spot every time with the irons! I am always working on the takeaway and the folding and unfolding of the right arm in the backswing and downswing! This plus a flat let wrist and a bent back right wrist in my swing have greatly improved my ball striking! Thanks for the help Harry!
Thanks John, pleased to read you enjoyed another video. I wouldn't worry about the 'unfolding or the trailing arm in the downswing, this will happen as long as you relax the upper body and get the lower body working in the correct sequence!
Hi Stephen, thanks for commenting with your thoughts, If you could agree more information regarding your struggles to last till the end of the video that would really help me improve the content. Cheers!
Love the tip of the wall and lifting the club up, but the best tip was starting the downswing! Letting the club fall down (gravity taking over) and simply guiding the club to the ball with the right arm! Fantastic! God am I glad I found you! Cannot tell you how much you have helped me! Maybe you already have a video on this topic and I have not found it yet, but contact with the ball would be something to consider. I have found with my driver and fairway woods and hybrids, that striking through the ball and allowing the release to occur after contact has worked incredibly well for me ( as I have struggled with trying to hit the ball syndrome, too focused on the ball). I am struggling to do this with my irons however. There tends to be a gripping or impulse when I make contact with my irons rather than allowing them to pass through the ball. When I do it correctly, you feel it immediately and just know that you have compressed the ball perfectly. Unfortunately, I am unable to do that on a more consistent basis. Is there anything drill wise that would help me to achieve this feeling of perfect compression more consistently?
I just watched your video, "The Real Reason You Struggle To Strike Your Irons.", that answered my question above. The concept of pushing the downswing forward I think will help. Need to work on that, but logically, it should help my consistency of compressing the ball. In your video and others have taught me the importance of holding that angle in the trail wrist. The centrifucal force or angular force will cause the wrist to "fling the club head" through the ball. But by pushing this downswing forward should improve club/ball contact (compression) and low point control as well. Which is better to focus on in the downswing: moving the chest to the target or pushing the left pocket backwards?
Hi Ronald I was just about to recommend a few videos for you to watch of different concepts you can try but I’ve already seen you have replied again with you watching the real reason you suffer from poor ball striking so will take a look at this now! Glad the downswing move and right arm moves are helping your game!
I would suggest directing more on a slight shift forward. And wether you want to do this from the ensure being more in the right foot first to push off onto the left or straight onto the left is entirely up to you and depends on what feels easiest and what you believe you’ll have most success with. But the low point for ball striking is a huge key!
I would like to see more videos on the start of the downswing. I have a solid concept, with your help, of the takeaway and setting of the top. For me keeping the right wrist "cocked" in the downswing has been one huge help for me and when I do this the release is so natural, it just happens. It is like a spring automatically letting go. But the best thing that I have learned from you and others on YT. is the letting of the arms fall naturally in the backswing. When I allow myself to do this (which is what I need help with as I have been an arm swinger for so long), the club seems to get into a natural slot and I am able to transfer the weight more naturally to the left side and the club goes through impact flawlessly. So, I would like to see more drills on how one can transition from being an arm swinger in the downswing (forcing the club downwards) to letting gravity happen, stalling the body from opening up too quickly and letting those arms fall, which then make you feel your weight transfer to the left in order to help accelerate this gravity feeling of the club through impact. Thanks
Actually, the videos I would like you to focus on with drills is what you cover in this video at the 17:37 time point onwards. How can we learn our teach ourselves at the top of the swing to “let go, or release the trigger feeling”, or tension, to let the club fall down to the ball and not force it down. Allow ourselves to let gravity start the downswing. I know when I do this, the results are usually quite good. Old habits are hard to break!
Brilliant, thanks for this, i'll take note and focus on really breaking down this concept! How to let the club fall/ how to let it happen in the downswing?
When you demonstrate what NOT to do 90% of the time, what do you think we (who are watching) remember? ☝🏻Please don’t focus on the fault … please repeat what we SHOULD BE doing over and over and over. ☝🏻“Repetition is the mother of skill, the father of action” Thank you … and keep up the good work 👍🏻
Thanks a lot, pleased you enjoyed the video, and yes, i agree, you need to understand what is going wrong to put it right. Is there anything else you'd like to see on the channel to help you with your game?
@@harryshawgolf I think most of us mere mortals who enjoy this game a) swing too hard, and b) swing out of balance. So a primer on getting maximum CLUBHEAD SPEED (and distance) and still finish in BALANCE would be great ☝🏻
Another great video! Thoughts on when I get to the top of the swing my left shoulder seems to turn into my chin instead of under. Noticed that while I was recording my swing…everything looked good but that.
Thank you. This is Interesting. it could be because your rotating into the top of your backswing fairly lateral as opposed to staying on the 45 degree angle in the swing. This will make more sense if we arrange a zoom call to discuss this. I would also like to take a look at your swing which you can send over on skillest.
So if you've managed to follow me on Skillest the likelihood is that I've replied to you following me, if so check your messages and I'll send you a link to my booking page. Alos, the link to book the zoom is in the description.

Right palm facing the sky in BS is great. Now simply keep the right palm facing the sky in DS through impact. Ben Hogan referred to this as supination. Arms and body follow the lead of our intention of the hands. it is how our motor cortex works, due to overwhelming number of motor neurons connected to our hands. (homunculus)
I’ve not come round to reading that book, but as I say always open for new suggestions on how to improve my coaching style to suit your needs. You must’ve given this a try, and must be working so pleased it’s helping you!
HI Harry been working on this drill been good, how ever on my down swing at parallel the club face is open 😢😢😢 which causes me to flip the club head.. HELP. Cheers Rob
Hi Rob, thanks for commenting, pleased to read you’ve found this useful, with regards to the downswing it sounds like you’re either hinging the wrists too much/ getting a lot of shaft lean, or the swing is too steep on the downswing. I’d like to suggest we jump on a zoom call to discuss this downswing move and see what drills I can give you to suit your swing. You can use the zoom call link to make a booking from the description!
