Wonderful. There is only one problem: everyone's body is different and the only way is to use a CGM. The good news is that you've shown anyone who wants to lower it can.
If you remove the corn and add maybe spinach lettuce or celery instead/ I am sure your fasting blood sugars would have gone lower to normal - try avoiding the corn at dinner and see the difference - quinoa salad with tomatoes onions peppers olives cucumbers celery lettuce spinach whatever else you can add as long as it’s not a high carb like corn! I developed type 1 diabetes as an adult, i was 68. Though I’m glad I didn’t get it as a child it sure was confusing and I felt overwhelmed! I wish your videos were part of my early learning process. Everything you say resonates with me and I appreciate all the encouragement. Thank you for making life easier for me since I tuned in 😊 Besides the fact that I save every one of your recipes…. So I’m off to the kitchen for this one ❤
What blew my blood sugar control was Thanksgiving dinner in 2010. As a vegan, there wasn’t much to eat so I just had some high glycemic carbs…and way more wine than I’d normally drink. I woke up VERY SICK with a SEVERE low blood sugar attack at about 6 a.m. on Black Friday. For 3 years I had out of control hypoglycemia as something in my body broke. I eventually suspected that it was my liver that was the problem, not my pancreas. Like you mentioned, the liver not only releases glucose as needed, but also filters out booze. It will default to filtering out the booze and not maintaining a good blood sugar. So, WHAM, a scary hypoglycemic attack.
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes less than a year ago, I noticed my fasting blood sugar levels are between 115 and 130 if I eat a low carb supper, exercising for 15 minutes ( 1 hour after supper) and eating supper at 5 PM.
Every person’s glucose sensitivity to food is different when diabetic. I can’t eat any beans or grains or my blood sugar will be in the 200’s 😬 I am grain free and bean free! I eat animal protein, high fiber fruits and veggies and only low glycemic fruits like avocados and berries. I take a ton of supplements and have for 20 years, I am now 63 years old. I have a new job that I walk 2-4 miles a day that is helping manage my blood sugar also. I take any “treats” I want to eat to work since I’ll be very active for 6 hours! If your job doesn’t support your diabetic lifestyle then consider looking for a new career. I have an accounting background ground and sat 8-10 hours a day and I was really unhealthy. Now I work for County Parks and Recreation were I live and I am active all day like no and outdoors. I live my job because I am healthier than I’ve been in a long time 🎉
Great video! I agree with your experiences. I am a T1 who takes a split dose of Levemir. The long acting insulin does NOT last 12 hours. My blood sugar begins to elevate about 1-2 hours before my next dose of Levemir. I end up taking an extra shot of short-acting insulin before bed and right after waking up. Thanks for giving us your results.
I am on Tresiba, which is supposed to be ultra long lasting, and once a day. Well, once a day was not working that great for me. I still was spiking a lot in the mornings and edging hypos later on in the day. Same total dose but split into morning and night took care of that!
What sorted my morning high blood sugar Tom was i started taking my basal in the evening instead of in the morning. I take it every evening at 7 pm so it’s well and truly floating around me for when I wake at 4:30.

Good advice except for the bit about drinking whiskey. Simply put alcohol is a nerve toxin. Ever hear the phrase "blind drunk?" It arose from the fact that alcoholics can literally destroy their optic nerve through excessive alcohol consumption. Many years ago when I was first experiencing diabetic neuropathy I was at a party and someone offered me a gin and tonic. By the time I'd finished the drink both my feet felt like they were on fire! I was at the time teaching sea kayaking and a week or two later I had a client who was a neurologist. When I mentioned the gin and tonic causing my feet to burn he said, "If I were you I would give up alcohol consumption. Diabetics often develop neuropathy and alcohol consumption will only make it worse." That was in 1982 and I have not touched a drop of alcohol since. I guess the motto of my story is "Once feet burn, twice shy!"

Two things I’ve found have had a dramatic effect on my type 2 diabetes; continuous blood glucose monitor, and your show. The amount of research you put into it is fantastic. Relying on one source of data (you) is problematic though. Keep up the great work.
Have you checked into the Mastering Diabetes method? Whole food, plant based, no dairy/products and zero oils. I’ve been doing this now for about 6 months and I have Type 2 with gastroparesis. I’ve decreased my insulin usage by 30%, my A1C dropped significantly, and my other symptoms have either decreased or stopped. You’re doing a lot of what is recommended by their book and it’s been instrumental in my life. Thank you for sharing your results and reinforcing how important it is to be in control of your health.
Thank you, Tom, for all that you do for the diabetes community. I'm glad I have a place where I can get good info from someone with experience. It's too bad that all the diabetes specialists don't have experience with diabetes. They only learn from books. 😏👍
Certain beers do and some don’t. I forums a sugar free wine called “Life Vine”. I swear your information is on point. I’ve learned a lot during the past few years. I drink water prior to coffee. I think that helps. I’m going to try those surveys. And the vinegar helps
As a Type One Diabetic for more than 70 years, I have not found coffee affected my blood glucose level at all. Now I way that with a qualifier, that is, I only drink about approx. 20 oz. / Day. Usually, first thin in the Morning. I have also found that instead of coffee I drink a Lions Main Mushroom coffee in the morning instead and that was by far great as I didn't experience an afternoon energy loss which usually occurs from coffee. Mushroom Coffee infused with 6 Superfood Mushrooms; Organic Cordyceps, Lion's Mane, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Maitake, & Chaga Adaptogens
Only? 20 oz is over 3 cups of coffee. A serving size of coffee is 6oz. Assuming standard coffee, that is about 325 mg caffeine. Nearly the max daily recommended intake of caffeine.

I learned how to inject myself with a glass syringe and a metal needle when I was 4. I have lived with diabetes for more than 70 years now. I have also run a retreat for people who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. At the retreat, we put them on a diet of complex vegetable juices that we make ourselves, 4 to 5 times a day. We avoid the toxins that are in the processed juices sold by the food industry. Within a week, the type 2 diabetes symptoms that the doctors detected are gone. Then we switch to eating whole vegetables. After another 2 weeks, we move to whole foods, with no processed food or starches. These people leave our retreat cured of the type 2 diabetes condition. It is a dietary cause. It only takes people who are serious about getting rid of the type 2 condition they have created. Those who are not serious often go back to eating heavily processed foods and overeating. Then they are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes again. This treatment is not effective for type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the body’s immune system attacking and destroying its own insulin. Insulin is essential for regulating blood sugar levels. Thanks for sharing ideas applicable to even those with impaired glucose tolerance-pre diabetes. My A1C rose to 5.9 but I pushed it back down to 5.4 and hope to push it lower to avoid a diagnosis. My mornings can range from 101 to 125.
Hi Tom! Yeah I saw you with the chips and definitely my favorite! I do the same thing I don't always have olives but I'm going to try to do what you suggested. And it does help when you eat dinner at a earlier time although I don't be hungry early sometimes. 👍🏼
My bg has done inexplicable things like this too. Once I believe it was having to go to work at the crack of dawn and work with the company's most abrasive women in a bossy mood. What my cgm showed was amazing!
I have noticed that having some red wine with dinner does not cause a spike as well. Using a CGM has improved my ability to lower my average BS reading throughout the day. The reports provided by CGM vendors are invaluable in developing dietary regimens that keep the BS in check.
Dawn Phenomenon should be expected as part of the circadian rhythm, to prepare you for the day's activities. Hmm. Coffee was not a problem for me. (Type 2). Although I will use regular vinegar with certain food, as well as dill pickles and/or sauerkraut, I also drink a lot of lemon juice before food with starches, as the acids in all of them will slow down their processing (supposedly). It seems to work for me.
I’m eating almost a carnivore diet and usually eat one meal a day, and if that meal is late in the day, I often wake with a very high blood glucose after many hours of reasonable or even low blood glucose. I think that this might be due to gastroparesis: my stomach sometimes won’t release its contents to the small intestine for further digestion until I’m asleep. I’ve been a type 1 diabetic since 1970 and neuropathy of the vagus nerve is usual in diabetics like me. It might help to have several smaller meals, but often my stomach will just hold them for almost a day, with little digestion.
The Shakshuka recipe is indeed delicious! I tried it this morning for the first time, but I find that meals with a lot of protein and no carbs make my blood sugar rise. It is difficult to work out the ratios, so I will need to experiment to determine how much to bolus for this.
I am ty2 i eat all carbs in the morning or nolater than noon. Supper time is no later than 5 pm after that i use tea or water. Coffee raises my sugar by 2 point so i avoid coffee.
Great video just confirming you're talking about black coffee correct? Thank you for such a thorough video. Excellent hacks. I'm pre-d and have experimented with every hack like you have. Keep up the great videos.
Hello I am new to your channal and I think your channel is the best as you give lots of tips keep up the good work you do My question is I am prediabetic been diagnosed for the 3 rd time now Cany you tell me what my blood sugar readings should be befor I go to bed and when I wake up in the morning Also when I use the meter my reding in the morning is around 4.8 Thank you I would real appreciate you getting back to me
My blood sugar tanks early in the morning making it really hard to wake up. I don’t drink, but I do use cannabis. I have a concussion so the cannabis is very helpful. The shakshuka looks great but I’m allergic to nearly everything but the eggs, which I do start every day with eggs and high fiber/protein low carb toast.
Fantastic video and helpful for ALL diabetics and even pre-diabetics! Another shakshuka lover here, LOL! @TypeOneTalks Tom, Have you done a deepdive on fiber and total vs net carbs? My own experience is kind of mixed in regards to that, like, not all fiber is equal!
My morning blood glucose levels are often right around that 86, or lower. The problem is, an hour later, without ingesting a single calorie, it doubles or even triples. Typically at a rate that causes the arrow on my CGM to be tilted upward, or straight vertical. And some days it will just continue to rise all morning, even while being extremely physically active. Other days, it'll just spike to 140-150, and stop there. But again, always at a fast rate.
Check It with a finger prick blood test monitors are unreliable The ones I have used take off like that once they start going up or sometimes when they are going down they just keep going but I have checked with blood test from finger and they have been way out and my levels have been OK
I am often hypoglycemic, or near it, overnight and first thing. But none of that is different compared to the last 2-3 years. I'm not exercising in the morning, at most a leisurely walk with the dog. I'm a fitness professional, so I'm well versed in the effects exercise can have on blood sugar. The CGM has also been the same for 3 years now, the only thing different is the behavior of my blood sugar. Today it's risen from 98, to 182...and I've ingested...oxygen. 🤷🏽♂️ So I've injected the usual 2-3 units of Humalog on an empty stomach that brings it back down where it's supposed to be/was, and keeps it there the rest of the morning until I eat.
My largest spikes in blood glucose are caused by exercise. Problem or no? Mountain biking and trail maintenance. I have pre-diabetes. I have reduced carbohydrates significantly.
You are depriving yourself of essential nutrients and minerals which could be the source of your headaches. Please eat. Reduce the carbs and times you eat. Nothing after 6-7 pm, as he mentioned. I eat meat and veggies like Chicken Avocado or Cobb Salad. I'll have a cheese burger with lettuce wrap or a Cheese Steak Bowl from my favorite pizza shop. Eat! *Smile*
Well, I was exaggerating not eating at all as being the answer. I'm vegan and that won't change. My 28 year long nonstop headache has nothing to do with diet, and everything to do with 3 serious neck and head injuries, along with a birth defect at the base of my skull. @@AntHolm
What I do is a correction dose (Current Blood glucose - 6) divide by 2 (in mmol/L). So if your blood glucose was 14 mmol/L you take 14 - 6 /2 therefore 8/2 = 4 units correction dose.
I'm a scientist and having T1D since 50+ years. As a lecturer I also taught research methods couses. My comment on Hack 7: correlation does not mean causation. Maybe you sleept badly because glucose levels went up... Also... are you using an insulin pump? because in that case many of your points can be taken care of by carefully adapting your pump settings. My morning glucose levels are typically between 4.8-5.6.
Almost all of these affect me the same. Except i don’t want bourbon every night lol. and i don’t always have time to fit an after dinner walk in. The best for me is to have the last meal early. before 5 even. Family doesn’t love that however
I wish i could hug your neck. I have tried so hard, but my morning glucose is never below 100. I do see everybody saying to eat supper early, and I do eat late because that's when I'm hungry. That's interesting about the 12 hours! Okay, I'm about to re watch your video about 3 times! Again, thank you.
How do you forward your blood sugar levels to the display next to the globe behind you ? Thank you for all the information you put out! Very much appreciated!
I don't think he forwards it. There is what is called a sensor, transmitter and receiver. The sensor is attached to your skin and senses your what the blood glucose in your body is, then the transmitter transmits it to the receiver. The receiver is what will show you the blood glucose on a devise. The main devise has to be in a certain proximity to the to you to read the blood sugar then it can be read in other devises.
Hello ! Sorry , but the best exercise is swimming and running (in some in door band platforms help you run at house ), others exercise like bodybuilding or static not so great...a little better is aerobics exercises. Thanks you share your experience with us !👌
After i've eaten some fish with brussel sprouts at 7pm and a sweet apple and some nuts around 9.30 pm, in the morning i had 9.1 . My a1c was 7.1 when diagnosed a month ago after a year with extrem stress and eating unhealty with a lot of bread and drinking a big bottle of cola almost daily. Sorry for my eng.
I love brussel sprouts but they are the most toxic vegetable unless organic. Supposedly, the herbicides/pesticides use for growing them can contain arsenic that has been shown in studies to help one become diabetic. Others are celery and green beans, unless organic, they may contain more toxins than usual, also non-organic apples could be contaminated.
According to some research, the enzymes in bromelain can increase the speed at which the body digests fats. If the right amount of bromelain can also digest fats on the liver or pancreas, that will be a great news.
Had to fast for testing. Why does glucose go up when waking up? For instance: 6:00 110 9:00 148 As glucose went higher, I started shaking. I just don't understand.
My problem is sleep as I work many night shifts a week and try to get to sleep by 11h00 till 17h00. Also I have I insomnia as well and at times stay awake for over 24 hours
If you activate the sensor with the phone, you can scan sensor and receive alarms only with the phone. If at first you activate the sensor with your reader, and a little later by your phone then you have two devices to scan your sensor but the alarms will go only to the reader. This is the way it's designed.
I've been trying to make my morning levels higher as I tend to by quite hypo when I wake up. I've been experimenting with different foods and liquids as my blood sugar will raise up during the night, but then plummet a few hours later making me wake up as I feel horrible. My Dr and I are talking about different things I can do to help my sugar stay up during the night. I'm not a diabetic, but a lot of your tips have helped me recently since being told about hyperinsulinemia by my Dr. My normal morning levels fall around 50-65 mg/dl and it takes a long time for me to feel alright after waking up so I can get to work.
Since starting a new Libre 2, my overnight readings have been low, in the 50's. I've noticed on occasions in the past when lying on my arm with the Libre 2 sensor, the readings can be low, presumably due to reduced blood flow, but this is now all night long, regardless of position?? What's going on? My morning finger stick was fine at 80. I have insulin resistance, not diabetes (was pre-diabetic for some years, now back in normal HbA1c range thanks to WFPB diet x 1 yr and at least 12hr overnight fast). Would appreciate your comment and perhaps recommendation for a better CGM product. Thanks!
So when you eat your dinner before 7 PM then is that all you eat for the entire rest of the evening or do you have a snack before bedtime.? And if so, what kind of snack do you have?🎉

@@ron95754 I didn’t know type 1 was like that, and can see how serous that is. I thought the higher the number the more severe like with burn degrees.
I am hoping to get it under 300....
Your videos are just amazing. I love your positive attitude
Thanks very much!
Thanks! Also, I like you background shelf with it's items.
15:48 don't drink coffee first in the morning
Thanks for sharing ideas applicable to even those with impaired glucose tolerance-pre diabetes. My A1C rose to 5.9 but I pushed it back down to 5.4 and hope to push it lower to avoid a diagnosis. My mornings can range from 101 to 125.
What works for you?
How many months
This video is excellent. Helps me 👍👍👍
Hi Tom! Yeah I saw you with the chips and definitely my favorite! I do the same thing I don't always have olives but I'm going to try to do what you suggested. And it does help when you eat dinner at a earlier time although I don't be hungry early sometimes. 👍🏼
Great video . We DT1 community thank you for all the info. Will try to sleep early as is one the most important ones.
Thank you for your kind words my friend!
My BG goes from 90-160 just by waking up. It is so irritating.
My bg has done inexplicable things like this too. Once I believe it was having to go to work at the crack of dawn and work with the company's most abrasive women in a bossy mood. What my cgm showed was amazing!
You are my hero 😊 im so happy to found you!
Great video with valuable info, however at 18:30 you used the Extra virgin olive oil on heat to make food, I don't think it is a good idea.
Thank you, Tom!
Nice. Hopefully will help me
Can you post your quinoa recipe? Thanks for the good work.
Hi Tom.... awesome pods.... love each one.... I'm interested in the Blood Sugar Academy initiative..... is that working ?
Very interesting, Tom. Some really good advice in this video.
Try eating meat, eggs, fish and leafy vegetables at night and see what happens in the morning. Also stop eating earlier, like 4pm.
If I eat a salad at 5pm my BG is 103 in the mornings, so ea at lite at dinner before 6pm.
Wow great info. Thanks
I am ty2 i eat all carbs in the morning or nolater than noon. Supper time is no later than 5 pm after that i use tea or water. Coffee raises my sugar by 2 point so i avoid coffee.
This was good to watch .
Fiber and high protein.
Depends on the fatt too .
Thanks for another great video.
wow thank you
Great video just confirming you're talking about black coffee correct? Thank you for such a thorough video. Excellent hacks. I'm pre-d and have experimented with every hack like you have. Keep up the great videos.
For me it doesn't matter if it is black, with milk or with cream or with cream and sweetener , regular or decaf.I have to bolus for all types
Exercise is suppose to deplete glucose stored in the muscles
Hello I am new to your channal and I think your channel is the best as you give lots of tips keep up the good work you do
My question is I am prediabetic been diagnosed for the 3 rd time now
Cany you tell me what my blood sugar readings should be befor I go to bed and when I wake up in the morning
Also when I use the meter my reding in the morning is around 4.8
Thank you I would real appreciate you getting back to me
amazing
My blood sugar tanks early in the morning making it really hard to wake up. I don’t drink, but I do use cannabis. I have a concussion so the cannabis is very helpful.
The shakshuka looks great but I’m allergic to nearly everything but the eggs, which I do start every day with eggs and high fiber/protein low carb toast.
Great analysis!
You mite be hypoglycemic. And or cortisol raises blood Suger . Exercise can cause cortisol spikes .
Check It with a finger prick blood test monitors are unreliable The ones I have used take off like that once they start going up or sometimes when they are going down they just keep going but I have checked with blood test from finger and they have been way out and my levels have been OK
Probably stress hormones
Check it
I am often hypoglycemic, or near it, overnight and first thing. 🤷🏽♂️
So I've injected the usual 2-3 units of Humalog on an empty stomach that brings it back down where it's supposed to be/was, and keeps it there the rest of the morning until I eat.
@@russelldemczak8510 I don't know , you mite get checked to see if your diabetic 1
Good luck .
My largest spikes in blood glucose are caused by exercise. Problem or no? Mountain biking and trail maintenance. I have pre-diabetes. I have reduced carbohydrates significantly.
Not eating seems to be the only thing that brings my sugar down. 😕 As someone in constant head pain and being post menopause, I rarely sleep.
@@AntHolm
Question, When my sugar is high, do I bring it down dramatically with one heavy dose insulin or gradually with lower insulin dosage?
What I do is a correction dose (Current Blood glucose - 6) divide by 2 (in mmol/L). So if your blood glucose was 14 mmol/L you take 14 - 6 /2 therefore 8/2 = 4 units correction dose.
Thanks, trying not to become a diabetic at 78 you are very helpful.
Thank you for caring enough to comment
Tom my bedtime is 0500 my wake time is 2030. How many fasting hours before bed. I crave food from 0300 to 0500 badly.
Tried to join the dQ&A. I live in New Zealand - no option to select this available :-(
Do you have a blog or website where we can get your recipes?
I like the look of that quinoa salad...the recipe would be good?
Almost all of these affect me the same. Except i don’t want bourbon every night lol. and i don’t always have time to fit an after dinner walk in. The best for me is to have the last meal early. before 5 even. Family doesn’t love that however
I want a report on brown rice.❤😊
I wish i could hug your neck. I have tried so hard, but my morning glucose is never below 100. I do see everybody saying to eat supper early, and I do eat late because that's when I'm hungry. That's interesting about the 12 hours!
Okay, I'm about to re watch your video about 3 times! Again, thank you.
What happens if the dexcom sensor falls off? Can I put it back on?
Vinegar is supposed to lower glucose spikes from MEALS. If you randomly drink during the day won't do anything. You should drink with a meal
Sure. My question is how to get your blood sugar levels on a display like this ? Is this a finished product to buy somewhere or how did you do it ?
@@ronko4202Google Sugar Pixel Display.Type one
That one behind you it connects with your cgm and shows your blood sugar?
The dawn effect is because of the cortisol spike to wake you up. You can take ashwaghanda to lower cortisol.
Hello !
Sorry , but the best exercise is swimming and running (in some in door band platforms help you run at house ), others exercise like bodybuilding or static not so great...a little better is aerobics exercises.
Thanks you share your experience with us !👌
I get why he goes to bed at 9. It's so he can wake up super ealy to have nough time to do a full workout and cook before he has to leave for work!
I’ve seen that taking a fiber supplement at night really helps prevent the dawn phenomenon the next morning.
can u know about the TZIELD Medicine. its help to reverse type 1 diabities
Eating early just means you extend your fast for the next day. This is the reason for low sugar. Imagine if you cut carb and sugar altogether...
Dear Tom, may I ask you what is the device you have on the shelf that measures your glucose values? Thank you
It’s Sugar pixel. Works with both Dexcom and FSL. Here is a link customtypeone.com/?ref=typeonetalks
Can you leave out the cilantro in the breakfast dish?
Had to fast for testing.
Why does glucose go up when waking up? For instance:
6:00 110
9:00 148
As glucose went higher, I started shaking. I just don't understand.
I’m prediabetic .. when can I check my Hgb A1C is it every 3 or 6 months
The fat information is interesting. I am really struggling at the moment
Hack, for me, lower mine is a liter of cold water with fiber packets starting my day
My problem is sleep as I work many night shifts a week and try to get to sleep by 11h00 till 17h00. Also I have I insomnia as well and at times stay awake for over 24 hours
Have you tried intermittent fasting, e.g. not eating any dinner?
Thank you very much for your videos. I recently became a diabetic, and I’m learning a lot. Thank you.
Cinnamon is another hack which works like magic
how and when?
When I eat dinner around 5 or 6, then I have low blood sugar drops around 3 a.m.
Whats you fasting insulin ?
Mine does same
You’re super duper, Tom..
? Do you eat breakfast before doing your morning run?
Cant avoid morning cortisol my friend. Wake up at 70 guarantee a 60 point spike within an hour and a half . Keto / carnivore way to go btw. Good job!
Tom, what happens to dawn phenomenon when you travel from Sweden to Brazil?
Should be same as jet lag.
It usually takes a couple days for me to stabilize. The time change has impact on my sugars for sure.
Sir I apply new sensor then activate by phone nfc ,but it unable to read read by reader device ,it reads only from phone , what to do ?
Thanks!
Does do not read accurately
Do you mean my particular unit, or is Libre 2 in general known to do this sort of false read?
So when you eat your dinner before 7 PM then is that all you eat for the entire rest of the evening or do you have a snack before bedtime.? And if so, what kind of snack do you have?🎉
