  • I'd intended to take a nature walk in the rain, but the rain stopped before I was able to get outside. I took the walk anyway, following a portion of the Seoul Forest-Namsan Trail across Maebongsan, through a couple of parks, and finishing up with a great view of the Han River valley from atop Eungbongsan.

      Yeah, there are just so many spots for nature walks here. However, my wife and I love the big spacious parks in London. One of our favorite things to do there is to grab snacks from Pret and sit in a park somewhere to eat them, watching the local critters (the waterfowl, squirrels, etc) and the people playing with their dogs. We don't have anywhere in Seoul to let our dogs run free like that.

    What a pleasant surprise and memory is this video for me. My wife and I arrived in Korea in 2017 as newlyweds, and first lived in an apartment complex called 벽산아파트. We were thrilled when we came to the part where our old apartment came into view in this video. We only lived there for a year and then moved to Namyangju, and we haven't been back since. We only went to Maebongsan one or two times, so I really wasn't sure if we had been there, but when you got to the walking track/basketball court, my wife exclaimed, "that's our walking track!". Shin Geum Ho, Geum Ho, and Haengdang stations were our "stomping grounds" for that one year, walking everywhere. I think you surely had to pass our old apartment to get to the the bridge that crossed over the street to Eungbong Mountain and park. Thanks for the memories, I wish We could return there one day.

    The last time I was in Seoul we stayed at the Hamilton in Seoul and in the mornings I would walk to the east side of Itaewon and there was a staircase that would take you to Yongsan mountain hiking area. Thanks Mike for this video. I didn't realize you could hike from Yongsan to Seoul Forest. I might give it a try on my next visit. Also, the bike paths are first rate in Seoul and throughout Korea. If you're a cyclist visiting Seoul, bring your bike. Most of the bike rental places just have old bikes. The bike paths go along the rivers and streams, and if you're avid you can bike all the way to other major cities in Korea. You have to hand it to the Seoul government , the hiking and bike paths are very good and continually improving.

    Great video and showcase of this path Mike! Haven't walked it myself, but I'll have to check it out someday as it looks really peaceful with some nice spots to stop along the way! Also like you said, we're fortunate to be able to go to parks within the city, as back in North America there are definitely some city parks you have to be careful of because of some sketchy people hanging out there, and in Korea we're lucky to go to any park we want to and it'll be safe and peaceful!

    • @MikeFromKorea
      @MikeFromKorea  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks, Matt! I didn't even think about the safety aspect, but you're absolutely right. The thing that I love most about the parks, though, is the investment that's been put into them over the past 20 years. They're overall quite a bit better across the board from what they were 30 years ago: appearance, accessibility, maintenance, facilities, all of it. I just wish we had some wide open spaces where they'd allow us to let our dogs run free.

      My wife and I have no children. I'm afraid I don't have much insight into the education system these days. A friend of mine has a daughter in the public school system, and she seems to like it, but that's as far as my knowledge goes. I get the sense that things have changed quite a bit from the days when I did know more about it, but I can't speak to the details.

    I witnessed 2 different mass exoduses of expats in South Korea. The first one was when the 1997 Asian financial crisis hit South Korea. Fortunately, South Korea began to recover in late 1998. The number of expats began to increase again. The second was when the epidemic reached South Korea before it became a global pandemic. The second was more drastic because there had been a lot more expats during the 2010s than there had been prior to 1997.

    • @MikeFromKorea
      @MikeFromKorea  Месяц назад +1

      That's interesting. I was working at the Dragon Hill Lodge on the Yongsan Garrison in '97, so I was fortunate to be getting paid in USD. I don't recall ever being aware of an expat exodus. I'm sure my circle of expat acquaintances didn't noticeably shrink, else it would have caught my attention. I'm curious now to see if there are any stats on that somewhere. Thanks for bringing it up.

    • @swee2251

      @@MikeFromKorea The Asian financial crisis didn't affect the military bases and the districts around them. But it was a dark time for a lot of the civilians in South Korea. The South Korean exporters made a lot of money though, because the weakened won gave them the price advantage.

    • @MikeFromKorea
      @MikeFromKorea  Месяц назад +2

      @@swee2251 Yes, I remember the impact it had off base. That's why I said I was fortunate to be getting paid in USD. That said, it did have an impact on the on-base economy, particularly in the service industry. The restaurants, clubs, the hotel where I worked, they all saw a massive decline in business. The Americans with access found more value in going off base, and the Koreans with access could no longer afford it. Restaurants that had people waiting to get in every night were suddenly empty, the waitstaff standing around doing nothing. Everyone who had a service job suddenly lost a huge percentage of the tips they were used to. That was a big deal, because even though everyone was paid at least minimum wage, tips generally more than doubled the hourly wage on average. The Koreans in those positions were hit harder than the rest of us. I'm pretty sure some people were let go before it was over. Car sales on base suffered mightily as well, causing the sales agents to lose the commissions they relied on. People could suddenly get BMWs off base at half price.
