    this video was my most favorite of all time. I've seen it when I was 4, and I still enjoy it.

    they are historical pieces of art. it would be stupid to destroy them.

    Love the way Shay's sound like their going sixty when their doing about ten or fifteen mph. Three cylinders per engine just sounds great.

      I think the max these locomotives can go is about 6 miles an hour on a fully loaded train, but don't take my word for it

    Just beautiful. I grew there and one of my dearest most cherished memories is riding the Cass train with my grandpa. Nothing like the sound of that mournful whistle.

    It's worth noting that these engines are more efficient than a Toyota Prius with a full passenger load like this.

      That’s right, in fact as of this comments posting, Shay 5 is 117 years old, they’re built to last unlike the bull crap we have now

    I have visited Cass WV twice and took advantage of this train ride twice as well. Lots of fun and the store is really nice too. We loved the walkway behind the store under the trees and up high off the ground. A wonderful place. The observatory is close by there too.

    I remeber a few years ago as a kid when they let me ride all the way to the first stop (cant remember what its called) in the locomotive. They let me throw the coal in and everything. Got coal dust in my eyes, but it was one pf the most memorable experiences of my life. Cass will always have a special place in my heart. Hopefully we can make another trip this summer!

    I love the scene at 4:50. It's like WM Shay 6 says let's go and CSR 5 says ok!

      I will be going to Cass this summer in 2016, so how does one get a cab ride? Is there anything I should know about takin a cab ride?

    • @nssteampunk4865
      @nssteampunk4865 8 лет назад

      Armagon Armagon You do the shop tour and it's up to the crew if they can let you ride that day. Don't do it on Sundays because they are slammed

      Unfortunately, at this time, shop tours are no longer offered. However you can still ask the engineer upon the trains arrival at the depot.

    The oldest locomotive (Shay No. 5) and the youngest locomotive (WM Shay No. 6) pushing the Bald Knob train.
    Number 5 was built in November of 1905, and WM 6 was built in 1945, and was the largest and last ever Shay built.

    @TruegrassBoy Cars are pushed for safety with the steep grades and to keep cinders off the passengers. It has been done this was for 47 years and the logging company also pushed its trains. A conductor rides the front of the train and is able to keep an eye on the tracks ahead. Not dangerous at all.

  • @spcascades

    @TruegrassBoy Then I guess Amtrak and several other commuter operations are unsafe. They use push/pull trains in the same manner every day. For example, locomotive on one end, cab car on the other and at speeds much higher than Cass is running. If there is a car on the track in the case of Cass, it wouldn't take long to get stopped at the speed they are going.

    Yeah, thats me taking photos in the background, need to learn how to edit that out haha. I am not able to shoot much video as photography takes priority, but I try when I have the chance. I am starting to get used to the camcorder though. I am glad you liked the video, I will try to get some of the July Elkins trip stuff up in a few weeks.

    Wow, 2 amazing steam whistle's. The Cass was always a favorite of mine, I only visited once, but it was the best steam ride other than the Durango & Silverton, that I have been on. Also, at 6:10, what were you riding on?

    Thank you for your very thoughtful suggestion. However, after giving it careful & long deliberation, I must inform you that I must decline.
    After considerable research, I have found that your request is anatomically impossible. However, if you have found a way in all your creativity to perform such a task, please advise!
    This request has been made so many times over the past centuries, that one would believe a method of doing so would be known or had been found.
    We eagerly await your reply!

    looks dangerous pusshing the cars of people ahead of the engines. Suppose there is a car on the track?

    • @captainred22449
      @captainred22449 Год назад

      That’s how they did it when the railroad hauling logs up and down the mountain in the early 1900s. Easier to control the cars, plus there’s breakman to warn the engineers of dangers ahead

  • @PeterNGloor
    @PeterNGloor 12 лет назад

  • @Cockroach2008
    @Cockroach2008 11 лет назад

    Nothing artful about them! Just steel for recycling! They would make nice manhole covers!
    Junk all the remaining steam locomotives! Cut them apart & melt them down!
