Probably one of the very best Dutch Tool Chest tours - a place for EVERYTHING and everything in its place. There is hardly any space that doesn't have a tool or two fitted one precisely fitted on top of the other. This is simply awe inspiring. I've been back several times to revisit your precision craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing.
The tool chest is great. From a video standpoint, I liked the angles, pace, and descriptions--very well made! I'm recuperating from an injury, and this made me feel like I was in the workshop rather than stuck in bed. Only thing missing is the smell of freshly cut wood. Thanks for making this.
Marty. This is a fantastic use of the Dutch Tool Chest. I have built 4 of these. None as nice as this one. I have one more to build. I will steal some of your great ideas. It will be for my personal use intended for my grandson one day. The shallow drawer is a terrific idea
John Montgomery standard practice. Before the pozidrive straight slot screws were always aligned to the piece screwed on. As here horizontal, which is the lie of the handle and in the likes of door hinges vertical, following the door height. On door hinges the alignment also served to prevent paint gathering in the slot, (as it would if horizontal) as well as looking neat.
I really enjoyed the chest tour, especially how you made use of earth magnets. I have used them a lot in my tool chest (Shuster tool chest). Thanks for explaining how you attached everything.
hahaha, actually I perceived a little amount of dust over the awl holder behind the chest just in the beginning of footage and remember wondering "well, on the editing session this man must have thought a hundred times in remake the film from zero just to match the high-end NASA standard of his workshop". Well, that is a thing a man like me suffering WOD (workshop obsessive desorder) would think. by the way, this chest is a unique masterpiece! Greetings from Brazil
Awesome work! thanks for the inspiration! Hey just a thought for the ruler & straight edge... if you cut in little "finger recess/ pocket" into the lid, etc. behind where they sit it may make it easier to get your finger behind the ruler & straightedge to pull them off the magnets.
Initially the Dutch Tool Chest turned me off because it seemed like a jumbled mess of tools in most people's boxes. Yours is without a doubt the nicest DTC I've seen and probably one of the nicest in general. Thank you for sharing. 've watched it probably 5 times over the past 6 months as I contemplate my build.
I really enjoy mine and anticipate using it for the rest of my life. If you build one and fit it nicely I'm sure you'll love yours. Thanks for the nice comments. I really appreciate it.
that is quite the collection of rare earth magnets u got there..haha!;) j.k. one hell of a tool collection and box. man that thing must weigh A LOT! and be worth ALOT.Thanks for the tool box tour got some cool ideas..super organized.AWESOME job bro!
Marty Backe ALWAYS Bro!! i use them a lot for holding planes and rulers in my tool cabinet also. they do work VERYwell.can't go wrong with them especially considering what they're holding. and yeah I wouldn't want to lift that tool chest either.. unless I want a herniated disk. lol
I sense a high degree of obsessive compulsive behavior. Please pass on my condolences to your wife 😩. Beautiful tool chest! Why anybody would leave a thumbs down on this effort is beyond me. Keep up the good work!
Incredible! Maybe should relabel this video “extremely magnetic OCD tool chest”. Not sure if the magnetic field repels sawdust somehow. Either way, very impressive. Thanks for the great video!
Hi Marty- Can't say that I'm going build a tool chest, but you gave me a ton to think about. It gets tiring looking through the drawers for tools and tool rolls. Are sometimes a pain. So I will use many of your ideas, if it's ok with you.
Amazing work, wondering if you could share where you got your work apron. Something lightweight like that would be handy in the summer humidity. Thank you!
Nice tool chest! it seems like its very practical! I diddnt like the camera tho, too few big pictures. It is hard to picture the whole chest with only closeups, would be nice to see it in action from a bigger view. Also i diddnt quite understand what the back panel was for, just storing saws and stuff like that?
This video is a tour of my tool chest. It is not meant to educate people on what a Dutch Tool Chest is. If you Google the term you can learn what the back panel is for and see it in use.
Il rephrase. I think it is is hard picturing your tool chest, as with closeup pictures things feel very disoriented. It is not pleasant for the eye to watch a closeup for a longer period of time. As for the panel i mentioned, im wondering, since you use your toolbox stationary, why you dont have tools there aswell, since you have them on the sides. I asume if you where to travel with it, you would have to pack everything inside the box anyways, so why not use the free space. But thank you for the reply.
@@nullings I understand what you are saying. I recognize various video formats are not enjoyed by everyone (impossible to please all, as we know). I mostly post to satisfy myself with the thought that some people may also enjoy the content. There are just about an infinite number of combinations of how this tool chest design can be used to hold tools. This is my little take on it. Thanks for stopping by my channel.
I've watched this a few times Marty and probably commented before. I use a Snap-on type red steel tool chest, my first Grandson has inspired me to make something like yours for all my favourite tools so that it can go to him eventually. I'll be using yours as a resource when I start it. Lovely job ;-)
fantastic mix of practicality and beauty. I was surprised by the use of the magnetic holsters on the exterior, but the more I think about it the more sense it makes. It seems like a mix of a modern "kai-zen" approach (the tools have their places, and if you use those exterior ones frequently and they're visible, it's even more easily grabbable) and a time proven dutch classic box. I am going to experiment with a set of trays that go into a box, and when I work, I will leave the trays out somewhere visible. If I don't have enough space in my shop, then the outside of a tool box would be a great place for a lot of magnetic catches. I do plan to take a toolbox out and about sometimes with me, so I'll not end up with exactly what you've got, but I loved your tour and its given me lots of nice ideas. I'm stealing the rare earth magnet thing. I'm gonna go nuts with those. thank you!
I was stoked to attend two of his workshops. For the first four days we built the Roorkee Chair, then two days to build the primary parts of the Chest. I was saddened that later that year he decided to stop giving workshops :-(
Warp - for you tray idea, what about building a box where the trays slide out in different directions? For instance, two on the front, two to the left, two to the right. they could be still "at the box," but visible. I've got a picture in my head. May need to spend some quality time w/sketch up..... hmmmmmm
Thanks for sharing. I've been so caught up in making foam rubber organisers that I've forgotten how easy it was to use magnets and shields for tool storage, so thanks for that. How do you ensure your magnets don't come out? I like the idea of creating an outline "shoe" for every tool. That way a missing tool is easy to identify.
Beautiful! I have a fraction of the tools you have, but I still find myself trying to figure out the best way to store them. I'm amazed at how much this chest can hold.
Super storage chest, well laid out. Wouldn't want to have to carry it Anywhere. Just looking at it, imagining having to pick it up made my hemorrhoids flutter.
Thank you very much for those nice words. It's a pleasure every time I grab a tool from it. I hope you can make a tool chest that inspires your best work.
We clearly have differing opinions as to the main function of a toolchest. I see that you permanently mount the front cover on the back of the chest so where do you keep the battens?
Yes, doesn't everyone have different opinions on how tool chests are built and used? That's a good thing in my opinion. This Dutch Tool Chest (as documented in the Popular Woodworking article) only has one center batten. I didn't show it, but it rests between the lid and the back of the tool chest.
Nice Dutch toolchest. I'm a Dutchman and may tell you that luckily the contens of your toolchest isn't typically Dutch. Like the absolute heirloom appearance of the tools and chest.
18:40 < What did you call this tool? I couldn't hear it clearly in the video. This is an amazing build! It's inspiring to to see all the thought that's gone into it.
No, it's only for show ;-) Perhaps if I shot this in 4K video you would be able to see the sawdust. I do clean my shop and tools so you will never see bunches of sawdust on my tools. Look at some of my other videos and perhaps you'll see that I use my tools.

The beauty of the slant lid is you can't pile stuff on top of it which would make it a hassle just to open the chest. All of the flat surfaces in my shop eventually collect junk, but my dutch tool chest is always free and ready to be opened.
As I watched this, I kept critiquing the redundancy of the tools, but you really do have a lot of nice things and it is apparent they all have a utility to you. I really appreciate well-thought design and you have truly put in the effort. Bravo Zulu.
Nice tool chest . Do you keep a picture of each drawer? I could not remember where I put all my tools but I am 67 , so I need all the help I can get. What table saw do you use ?
Very nice tool box! I like how you have very thing layer outside looks really good, where do you your larger hand saws and panel saws or do you not use them? Anyways thank you.
You're correct. The runners are attached with screws (no glue) so there's plenty of 'give' considering that I live in Southern California where we don't see a lot of wood movement. It's been a couple of years and I haven't seen any effects. Thanks for the comment.
Every tool is implanted, and place precisely, thank you for sharing this delicious collection and magnificent tool box. Tool porn at it's finest.
Thanks for that :-)
Nice sideline for you making/selling these , i"ll put an order in now .......good vid., just sub"d :]

Most impressive, I imagine many hours of thought and labor went into this design, honestly a fine piece of craftsmanship!
The tool chest is great. From a video standpoint, I liked the angles, pace, and descriptions--very well made! I'm recuperating from an injury, and this made me feel like I was in the workshop rather than stuck in bed. Only thing missing is the smell of freshly cut wood. Thanks for making this.
Glad you enjoyed the tour. Hope you can get back in the shop soon.
Absolutely beautiful!!!
He’s one of my favorite Woodworkers too. I love everything Chris does!
That is one awesome tool chest! I love your modest decorative touches and the use of magnets.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for those nice comments. I appreciate it!
Lovely Marty. So thoughtfully planned out. We all love to other craftsman's tools. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks John!

Magnets turn the tool into a magnet. When you sharpen the edge of one, the cuttings stick to the blade.
I've watched this a few times and love all the little details. You gave every element purpose and aesthetics. Great work.
Thank you very much!
That is one of the neatest tool boxes I have ever seen! A real gem of storage features and tricks. Thanks!
Wow! Really awesome tool chest, with an amazing collection of fine tools!
gorgeous tool collection and amazing job compacting and organizing.
Lovely tool chest, well presented tour of same and everything in its place. Thanks for sharing.
I love how you aligned your screws

Wow...beautiful work Marty, good use of space and I like the layout. I can tell a lot of thought went into the planning. Thanks.
Thanks :-)
You have many nice features on your tool chest. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for the tour Marty. Really like how well organized everything is. I especially like the collection of fine tools you have!
Thanks Guy :-)
Awesome toolbox Marty! So many sweet tools. I have tool envy now!
Beautiful! Love how every tool has a spot and a magnet!
Thank you!
What an incredible tool box, just spectacular, thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful set up.
I really enjoyed the chest tour, especially how you made use of earth magnets. I have used them a lot in my tool chest (Shuster tool chest). Thanks for explaining how you attached everything.
Magnificent Work, definitely a Tool Chest to be Proud of. cheers from Michael Australia.
I love how organized this chest is. Really like the spokeshave holders. Great attention to detail.
Good God! Does anyone else get the feeling that there's no dust in this guys shop? :-) This is just fantastic! Beautiful work sir!
hahaha, actually I perceived a little amount of dust over the awl holder behind the chest just in the beginning of footage and remember wondering "well, on the editing session this man must have thought a hundred times in remake the film from zero just to match the high-end NASA standard of his workshop". What a great way to spend a half hour! Wow, super organized colection, nice work!
Thanks :-)
I really like your videos, I find your attention to detail and skill very inspiring and motivating. Thanks for making them.
Very nice box and tools Marty! Thank you.
This is an amazing tool chest!! So we’ll thought out. Gives me inspiration to make my own. Love it! Well done. 👍
Awesome work! thanks for the inspiration! Hey just a thought for the ruler & straight edge... if you cut in little "finger recess/ pocket" into the lid, etc. behind where they sit it may make it easier to get your finger behind the ruler & straightedge to pull them off the magnets.
Thanks, and that's a great suggestion regarding the finger recess.
Very inspirational tool chest and a beautiful tool collection! Cheers
Thanks for that :-)
very nice tools, and very nice dutch tool chest, thanks for sharing and giving me inspiration

Loved to see your satisfaction face at the end. With all this, you can build not one or 2 houses, you can build 10.
You could call this the "rare earth magnet toolchest"! Awesome and thanks for sharing!
Thanks :-)
My favorite Dutch Tool Chest on RUclips.
That sliding drawer although very simple is just super sleek how it slides across and everything
that is quite the collection of rare earth magnets u got there..haha!;) j.k.
one hell of a tool collection and box. man that thing must weigh A LOT! and be worth ALOT.Thanks for the tool box tour got some cool ideas..super organized.AWESOME job bro!
I do like my magnets, but they work so well :-) I would not want to lift the chest, that's for sure. Thanks for your nice comments, as always :-)
Marty Backe ALWAYS Bro!! i use them a lot for holding planes and rulers in my tool cabinet also. they do work VERYwell.can't go wrong with them especially considering what they're holding. and yeah I wouldn't want to lift that tool chest either.. unless I want a herniated disk. lol

Beautifully done! Nice collection of Bridge City tools. Impressive.
Thanks. I enjoyed acquiring them those so many years ago
I like the idea to use magnets. Think I'll do some of that too whenever I put a tool chest together. Really nicely organized.
Thanks. I do like the magnets :-)
Thanks for the tour Marty, there is quite a bit of inspiration in that chest!
Thanks. I enjoy getting inspiration from other tool chests too.
Beautiful, well thought out, creative, and inspirational, Marty!
Thank you!
I sense a high degree of obsessive compulsive behavior. Please pass on my condolences to your wife 😩. Beautiful tool chest! Why anybody would leave a thumbs down on this effort is beyond me. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for that :-) I appreciate your words.
Thanks for the tour. Great idea for holding the front panel.
Thanks :-)
You must have a lot of spare time ;) Love some of the quality tools you have on display. Thanks for sharing.
Woodworking is one of my passions so I devote time to it. Less TV, more woodworking ;-) Thanks.
Did you know that these chest were also used in the 17th century in dutch sailingships? The sloping top was to prevent rain dripping into the chest
Also so no will park there buttocks on your chest
Great job Marty. Very impressed.
Nice chest holding a real nice collection.
Amazing job. Kudos from Brazil.
Functional e beautiful, congrats Sir !
Rare earth magnet drinking game! Just kidding, love the box and tool organization. Subscribed!
Incredible! Maybe should relabel this video “extremely magnetic OCD tool chest”. Not sure if the magnetic field repels sawdust somehow. Either way, very impressive. Thanks for the great video!
Great tool chest the details are awesome! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for that :-)
So much details, I love it ! great work (for great tools)
Beautiful work. Very well made. Very inspiring.

I do use lots of magnets all over the shop. I use a gel superglue. A few dabs in the bottom of the hole keeps them very secure.
Thanks. My toolbox is going to be tossed about so I think I'll use ring magnets for extra security
I use a few ring magnets for the heavier tools. They are incredibly strong - good choice.
Beautiful! I have a fraction of the tools you have, but I still find myself trying to figure out the best way to store them. I'm amazed at how much this chest can hold.
Thanks. I really do like the form factor of this type of tool chest. It serves me well.

Thank you very much for those nice words. It's a pleasure every time I grab a tool from it. I hope you can make a tool chest that inspires your best work.
@MartyBacke I'd love to see how you made your magnetic plane holders. Any chance you'd be interested in showing off a bit?

Que increíble y hermosa colección de herramienta. Si yo la tuviera no la utilizaría con el fin de no estropearla. ¡Gran trabajo!
Beautiful. Thank you.

@@MartyBacke thanks a lot!
Dang - so simple of a draw stop! Need to do that with my son's dresser now...
Awesome Toolbox !!nicely made.
Thank you
Your planes are beautiful
Are your little ledges just glued on? Little dowels? Wood glue or CA? 😀
I used gel CA glue and everything is still holding fine.
That’s beautiful work!
That stuff almost looks too nice to use hahaha
Beautiful collection, I hope I'll get there somewhere far in the future!
:-) Just start and you'll get there eventually. I had almost no tools 25 years ago.
Thank you for your reply!! Luckily it's going well with my collection, my first Lie-Nielsen is on it's way, a number 4 bench plane.
Me too , its taken me @ 25 years to get quality tools like Knipex , Wiha , Stahlwille , etc..:]
The one thing I don't see is sawdust. Do you ever use them?
No, it's only for show ;-) Perhaps if I shot this in 4K video you would be able to see the sawdust. I do clean my shop and tools so you will never see bunches of sawdust on my tools. Look at some of my other videos and perhaps you'll see that I use my tools.
Burn that was below the belt lol
Just Great 👏👏👏
Thanks Marty!
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! One idea...can you do something w/ the lid to make it a drawing surface? either as a drawing desk or as a place to keep drawings in use? that slope just exudes drafting table...
Thanks :-) Regarding the lid, I have seen some examples where the lid is used as you suggest. It just doesn't fit my needs to do so.
The slant would be nice for that, but then it gets in the way of accessing your tools.
Thanks. No, I used the chest all the time so I have no difficulty remembering where everything is. I have a 3hp Delta Unisaw from the early 90's.
Very nice tool box! I like how you have very thing layer outside looks really good, where do you your larger hand saws and panel saws or do you not use them? Anyways thank you.
Thank you. Regarding the larger handsaws - although I have a couple, they are rarely used so I store them elsewhere.
Beautiful tools.
Another work of art..
Very nice. That drawer you added - the runner is cross-grained. have you considered wood movement?
You're correct. The runners are attached with screws (no glue) so there's plenty of 'give' considering that I live in Southern California where we don't see a lot of wood movement. It's been a couple of years and I haven't seen any effects. Thanks for the comment.
Super nice work.
I have just ordered a bunch of magnets because of this video
How many times does he say "rare earth magnets"
Gorgeous design!
Beautiful tool chest, but I'd expect no less from you. I hope I can someday make one as nice as this one!
Thanks Erik! I appreciate your words.
