What a responsibility and joy to get to do this project. I have a few tools from my family and I treasure them as well. Now all you have to do is keep the tools pristine. This ain't no easy task! camphor and silica gel packs and hope. Great work on your part!
Sincerely: you have done a wonderful thing, for yourself, your family heritage & for humanity. My paternal grandfather started as a coal miner, but “improved himself” becoming a school teacher. Along the way, he built two houses (both still standing) in Bega, New South Wales, unassisted. I have early childhood memories of a huge collection of tools in a ramshackle shed, mostly carpentry but also the tools a lumber worker used. Being a true Scotsman, he would not pay for something he could do for himself, he produced his own lumber. In the mid 1960s a decision was made to clean up. Everything was thrown away. Somehow I managed to hang onto a pair of pincers & a drill brace. They have immense value to my mind….he died 2 years before my birth, I have these tools and I have what my own father said about him. Kindest regards & season’s greetings from Oz
super well done "need to restore", what a job. All old elements were retained and only restored what was really necessary, congratulations! Great-grandfather Melle van der Heide would have been proud 💪
This was a pleasure to watch. 💚 I found it very moving at the end, after all your hard work, to see the photographs of your Great Grandfather. This really was a journey through memories 'etched in time.' Thank you so much for sharing this with me. 🙏
Wow, this is your legacy. My grandfather was a goldsmith, his tools are just laying there in my aunt's attic. After watching this I also want to get atleast one of his hammers and restore it.
Love the care take to preserve the history of these tools. I’m just starting my woodworking journey (F53) and I’m already finding that I love hand tools, especially those that have been preloved. ❤
I was honestly dubious when I saw the title, but when I saw the care you invested into each individual tool I know that somewhere your great-grandfather is proud of you.
Thank you for doing this video. Really appreciate seeing these old tools come back to life. Knowing you have a family history with this tools set and box really does make seeing these tools that much more special, cheers
I can tell you one thing: Don't you dare sell those of. Those are gems worth keeping and if possible using. None of tools made today can't compare with quality if tools made 100 years ago. Well done!
This is what true restoration should be: tools meticulously cleaned, repaired when needed, and oiled to preserve and bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Most importantly, it’s about maintaining the history and character of these tools. Your great-grandfather is surely watching you with pride, smiling as he tells Jesus, Our Saviour, how proud he is of your work. Well done.
So well done. The wonder of these old tools is that they can be restored back to perfectly workable condition and that they work without the harsh sound of modern machinery and no batteries are needed.
I was gifted an old carpenter's chest similar to this one. It has a multitude of tools in it as well. Some of them are from the turn of the last century. I've dated several planes and saws to 1910 or even older. It's so humbling to know a man made his living out of this chest. I'm restoring these tools one at a time.
Fantastic work. A really sympathetic restoration. I have a large collection of woodworking tools, most of which are over a century old. As a previous commentator says the quality of new ones tools, with some notable exceptions, cannot compare with the materials and construction of their older counterparts.
What an amazing set of tools, and such a lovely "sympathetic " restoration. I really like the way you left some of the marks of time, accumulated during your Grandfather's time while using these tools. I would offer to buy it, but know such a family heirloom would never be subjected to being sold, as part of the value is always in the story that surrounds them.
Bonjour . Très beau travail . Ton arrière grand père . Peut être fière de toi . Et j'imagine ton papa aussi. Superbe restauration.
Great restoration! I hope you are continuing to adjust the planes. They are able to take off thinner shavings if you fiddle with them. This has a lot of information with little narration. Thanks for doing what you do.
I learned many things. There was a similar chest in an Amish tool store. It had a few more tools like saws. They wanted $5K for it. I will use some of your methods when restoring my tools.
On wedged planes, tap the back of the plane with a mallet to loosen the wedge. Don't pound on the notch of the wedge, you can break it off. Other than that, you did a very nice job.
Would you be willing to do a video or have plans for the auger bit set and the files. The boxes are beautiful and definitely something to be proud of. Thank you for a great video.
Red beech planes? I'd glue hornbeam on the sole..if I wanted to use those as tools. Nice work, though. Especially with the chisel box. Your great grandfather would be very much pleased!
Great video, but has anyone else mentioned yet that the captions are too small? I kept missing info because I didn't notice that there was even text on the screen.
Goeie job!!
12:38 Good job! But one thing: Those holes are from insects, so keep in mind that you need to apply an insecticide on that wood. Just in case, apply the treatment to everything, including the chest.
While I don't agree with every thing you've done to these lovely tools, they're yours to do with as you will. I would however suggest you learn how to use them properly. The planes were all set way too coarsely and moulding planes and plough planes are usually started from the far end to help consistency. Good luck and enjoy!
about the planes, not only the sole need to be flat, but also perpendicular to the bed of the iron. Block plane misses two parts, the chip breaker and the screw to adjust the angle from the iron. I feel bad about this, had to tell you. Judging by the hard time you had on plywood with them.. you should give it another shot with that in mind. Your sharpening looks just fine, you could have a way better result with a nice leveled sole. You wont use them in this state.
I'm sorry, I could not watch this all the way thru. removing the rust from the tools was okay as was refinishing the metal parts of the chislel handles, but I donot agree with the idea of restoring the wood of those gorgeous planes.
I never knew planes were so clever in their design - especially the plough plane!
The tools are made to be used not displayed. Use them as they were meant to be used and enjoy them. Nice to see them cared for with love.

What a remarkable heirloom, and what an extraordinary effort of restoration. Much respect! Your Grandfather would be very proud.

Those molding planes were beautiful, and a lot of work... the outcome was worth it!! Great job!!!
A labour of love. What a wealth of experience, skill and nostalgia. I envy your dedication to create a working museum to your Great Grandfather.
So well done. The wonder of these old tools is that they can be restored back to perfectly workable condition and that they work without the harsh sound of modern machinery and no batteries are needed.
Perfect and respectful restored to former glory. Your great-grandfather would be proud to see his toolbox lovingly restored by his great-grandson!

Nice job and lots of patience.
really good, he would be proud of what you have done!
Nicely done.
Great tools. My great gandfather had some of these too. Luckily we had saved most of them.😀
I like his grinding wheel. I believe it runs on oil instead of water. Nice.
Que hermoso!!!!!! saludos desde Juarez Mexico
Well done! What a great project
The chisel box is perfect 😊
What a lovely tribute! ❤
It must so satisfying to resurrect a lifeless old tool.
Amazing work.
Nooitgedacht😉, goed gereedschap. Berg beitels zijn nog wat beter. En klompen aan bij de restauratie 👌🤜

Ese tesoro cayó en buenas manos 😁👍
Mooi werk!
Amazing restoration, but the shavings you take are enormous! These planes are designed to take much thinner and delicate shavings.
Hate to complain also, but using a metal vice is also a nono. One slip and the plane blade hits the vice. Game over.
awesome video man.
Very nice, for once a guy who doesn't "restore" chisels with an angle grinder and a garden tile 👍
Sensacional!!!!!!!!!!
An awful lot of work, nicely done.
Each of those tools would have represented a significant investment for him, he'd certainly approve of your care and attention.
Awesome! Bravo!
Love your work ❤❤❤🇦🇺
Real treasure 👍👍👍

Monster job. You should realyy break this up into 10 or 20 smaller focues videos.
WHat a lucky man your GG was to have descendants to care about is history.
How did you protect the metal 14:42?
@@Ecila-SamerbergI used WD-40 for protecting the metal. Sometime after using a plane you have to apply it again because it can wear off.

any chance you would be selling any of those planes?
Hi Justaguy7477, the planes are not for sale unfortunately, I like to keep the tools together, but thanks :)
you should have re-stained the wooden bits on the bench plane.
TIL most hardware manufacturers made skates.

Why? A fresh coat of varnish will make them last longer.
Is this a Turkish/Turkman rug?
Yes I think so, it’s really handy and the tools don’t get scratched from the workbench.
