My mom use to tell me all the time "I was gonna make her lose her religion" and that was the sign to go to my dad's for awhile lol, I'm from Louisiana it is definitely a southern thing lol
Fun fact: The instrumental melody of this song originated from when the band's guitarist was trying to learn how to play the mandolin. He would record himself playing while learning, and play it back to listen for his mistakes/flaws. While listening back, he heard this melody and it ended up becoming iconic..
That makes sense and stands to reason, as the band was formed and got their start playing around the college bar circuit at the University of Georgia in Athens - I'm from GA too, btw (a small southern town called Jesup)...
Awesome song! Deep... seems to hit everyone. 😁💓 Losing my religion is a southern expression meaning losing your cool... frustrated, desperate. Excellent set of shirts! ❣️
You know how many times I've heard a southern mama say "boy, you're gonna make me lose my religion on you!"? 😂 That's when you knew a whoopin' was coming your way.
Everybody Hurts is a great song. But "other hit" makes it sound like they didnt have more hits :P

@@pleutron It's the next major song people are most familiar with who aren't necessarily "into" the band. I did a quick test on YT by checking the views on some songs for instance and the results were NOT surprising to me. Nightswimming - about 8M. Man on the Moon (a little more well known) - 25M. Everybody Hurts - 95M. I KNEW that song would be much more well known/viewed than the other two I checked. KNEW it. It even has over 3x as many views as It's the End of the World as We Know It
@@scarletjohnston741 Right? As of the song isn't powerful enough, reading all the things people are thinking about as they go through the video kills me. Beautiful song. "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel featuring Kate Bush is a similar song themed song & hits me the same way!
Love watching the two of you interact with each other and the fact that you aren't afraid to expose yourselves to new music. Having an open mind about anything is what helps us grow as individuals. Love it.
R.E.M. is a hugely important group to '80's alternative pop music. I'm so glad you're reacting to them!!!! I love you Half & Jai! Great choice! Be sure to do "Everybody Hurts" Official Video. Prepare yourself first.
He wasn't an angel. He was icarus. He was given wings by his father that was formed by wings and wax and he flew to close to the sun which melted the wax and made him crash back to earth. His father had warned him no to get too close to the sun.

I haven't heard them in so long. I love how Michael Stipes gets into it when he sings. Like the person said below, Everybody Hurts is awesome. It's my favorite song by them.
I ABSOLUTELY love this song, the video, the lyrics. I’ve never looked into what it means. Going by the video alone, an angel falls from heaven. The people on the ground laugh and take advantage of him. To the point of trying to imitate the light from heaven and the wings of the angel. All the while, the angel is suffering. The angel dies, but they managed to make their fake wings at his expense. That’s just the video, not the lyrics, and also just my interpretation.
To lose ones religion is an old southern saying. To lose your faith in a person or relationship or faith. It can be interpreted in different ways. Michael Stipe has asserted that it’s a break up song. I can see that in the lyrics.
@@leisastalnaker3790 right. I was analyzing the video, not the song. I did make it seem like I wasn’t aware what the phrase meant, though. Really I was just explaining I was talking about the video imagery as opposed to the song lyrics.

Here's what I've always thought of when seeing this video/hearing this song - and this is totally just me: the singer is a religious/political dissident in Soviet Russia (or a similar dystopian society, where being religious is illegal), being psychologically tortured - he's been drugged and is hallucinating, and the various semi-religious metaphors/iconography are what he's seeing as he does. In order to stay safe/alive, he has to lose his religion - claim to be an atheist. He's trying to keep up with the questions his captors are asking him, they're trying to get him to confess to "thought crimes" such as having religious beliefs, so he has to choose carefully what he says ("choosing my confessions"). They put him in the corner, they shine a spotlight on him so he can't sleep, it all wears him down. He's nervous, twitchy, can't keep still because he's been awake so long. He realizes he can't continue much longer, and he may already have said things that will damn him in their eyes ("and I don't know if I can do it, oh no, I've said too much"). [NOTE: The KGB under both Stalin and Kruschev (more under Stalin) actually did this kind of thing to people back in the day - to a communist, religion is "the opiate of the masses" - it calms them down and keeps them orderly, but Stalin in particular wanted people to worship *him* - a cult of personality, rather than a true religion - and he didn't want the church to have power, he wanted to be the only power.
