If a man is about to die and meet his Maker, and this man has gone his entire life without ever having heard jazz, this is the music the Maker would pour into his spirit to catch him up before he leaves this earth.
the cool thing is that kamasi wrote the choral and orchestral parts after recording the songs, and he did one hell of a job. He said in an interview that adding choral and orchestral parts to his music was an idea that someone gave him and that he decided to experiment with on this album and I'm so glad he did it gives the song such a dark feel.
I just cant get enough of this album. I think i'm burning holes into my hard drive and phone playing it over and over. The whole damn album (and it's big) is just so infectious. I've been listening to jazz and progressive rock my whole life. NOTHING can touch this album. It has opened a whole new world of incredibly talented musicians for me to follow and enjoy. I cant even begin to explain how groundbreaking/landmark this album has been for me, and i'm 45 and i've been a music junky since I was 3. This album is just amazing!
Wow! This track is perfect. The drumming is mind blowing, the saxophone work is some of the best I've ever heard. The piano solos and parts are just as mind blowing as the sax playing, and the gorgeous bass and that change up in the final minutes just seals it up amazingly. I mean, damn! This is literally one of the greatest things ive ever bloody heard!
lyrics: We are the music makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers And sitting by desolate streams;- World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers Of the world for ever, it seems. With wonderful deathless ditties, we build up the world's great cities. And out of a fabulous story, we fashion an empire's glory. One man, with a dream, at pleasure shall go forth and conquer a crown. And three, with a new song's measure can trample an empire down. We, in the ages lying, in the buried past of the Earth, built Nineveh with our sighing and Babel itself with our mirth. And o'erthrew them with prophesying to the old of the New World's worth. For each age is a dream that is dying, or one that is coming to birth. Arthur O'Shaughnessy
Having written lots of music writing in 7/8 is like a cheat code to make beautiful sounding music. Also a chest code to making the grooviest music ever.
I just found the liquid tension of the jazz world !!! If before we had Joe Petrucci demonstrating a masterpiece in the world of progressive metal now Kamasi Washington offers that glimpse of the supreme musical art called Jazz !!! Congratulations of Sao Paulo Brazil
***** no, he's not. there have been a lot of jazz artists like him throughout the years. he's helping to popularize it, but you're giving him too much credit. i mean don't get me wrong, this is pretty much my favourite album of the year, and it's filled with innovative ideas, but the dude is not jazz's saving grace in the modern age. also that still doesn't validate 'changing the history of jazz.' the future, maybe (but even then that's a ridiculous statement), but you can't change history.
***** that is a stupidly circular argument. history is always ongoing, yes. can you change what happened an hour ago, or a year ago? no, ergo, history cannot be changed. done. please no linear arguments. the guy made a mistake and that's that. now on the topic of jazz, there have been plenty of artists (and kamasi isn't like, world famous you know. it's not like you see this album everywhere in pop culture). you're completely forgetting matana roberts, and niechec - even portico and submotion orchestra, granted they're not rooted in jazz the same way this is, they still are fusion (which this is too). this is not revolutionary. it's simply an amazing jazz album that borrows heavily from the past to yield a new aesthetic meaning.
+Matt ...I think you know he meant changing history's trajectory...I think the average person knows changing history itself is impossible. He simply mean changing history's path or simply making new history. And of course you wont see this i pop culture...jazz isn't really as popular anymore but for a jazz album to garner this much attention is impeccable. Haven't heard a jazz album this talked about and critically acclaimed by critics in a while. Whether you think he is doing anything or not I feel he will slowly bring more popularity back to jazz as an artform thus making modern jazz history
I think the last time someone excited my jazz brain this much was when I first heard David Murray or saw Sun Ra. That was in the early 80s. This stuff digs in deep
Why are there no mainstream artists that use irregular time signatures? I reckon they are a way of achieving super bad ass grooves yet pieces written even in the easy ones like 7 and 5 are few and far between. Listen to the drums and bass on this, the feel is unreal. It's not like weird chord structures, this stuff is super pleasing to the ear. Actually this piece is crazy genius though. Maybe they just aren't good enough to write music like this even with a pop or hip hop feel. There are a few underground artists that do it but no one super famous has written in these time signatures since like Dave Brubeck.
+dahalofreeek It's not that they're not good enough, many great musicians work in the mainstream industry. My guess is that if you create something with the purpose to sell it as much as possible, you want to be able to connect with as much people as possible, so you shape your creation avoiding everything that could be incoprehensible to anybody, such as uncharacteristic chord variations and progressions or time signatures. This is actually quite hard to achieve and has incredible power because when you do that you're creating something that everybody can relate to. The equally powerful downside is that you are creating limits for yourself in the only place where there are none which is the immagination. I hope i wrote something helpful I apoligize for my not so fresh english. THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM I HAVE LISTENED IN THE PAST 10 YEARS
+dahalofreeek Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens are two that come to mind! And Snarky Puppy is becoming more mainstream. Prolly Bjork too... but it's been a while since I've listened to her stuff.
+dahalofreeek there are some. NIN, Tool. Dream Theater. often, progressive bands like Jethro Tull and Genesis. King Crimson wasn't popular when they were active, but have since seen universal acclaim for "Red" and "In the Court of the Crimson King". that, I think, speaks volumes about retrospect and accessibility - (check out the bebop-driven "21st Century Schizoid Man")
+Archie Farrer I didn't realize this was Thundercat. He's brilliant. Seen him live last year at Sony, went on right before his right-hand man, Flying Lotus.
I like Donny McCaslin? I think he is great? Friend of mine said that I have to checkout Kamasi Washington? I said Ok, sure. Holy Shit! He blows McCaslin out of the water! One word...AMAZING! This and "Re Run" the solos are just utterly Fantastic as well as the band behind Washington! What great music! 😊
Do you know what? This kind's of reminds me a song that Kamasi Washington hasn't heard in no way but it is very likely that both of them come from the same 70s prog-jazz-rock and it is Triana's "Del Crepúsculo Lento Nacerá El Rocío". Weird enough this has a flamenco vibe to me and that has something to do also

Damn t gal. The thought of your whole comment is mind blowing and so damn beautiful at the same time. When I die bury me with my headphones baby.

Awesome sentiment!!!

@cemegonuts This is one of the best albums, I've EVER HEARD. But Kamasi's 2018 release "Heaven & Earth" is just as good, might be better!!
Washington, Thunder and CREW are EXPANDING my mind with absolute GREATNESS. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
kamasi has to be in top 5 of greatest jazz artist of all time.

Wow...I came here to find The Magnificent 7 theme, and I find this ... MASTERPIECE.
Woah this is mind blowing. No other way to describe it.
Keep preaching Kamasi.....keep spreading the musical word my brother!
Best tune I have heard for a long while. Adore how the wave comes again and again. Beautifully orchestrated and so rich.

instant classic
The ancestors are leading us out of the puddle of bullshit back to the real. Thank You Great Skychief. This is gift from the Great ALL!!
that piano solo tho !!!
great jazz piece
Perfect track. How in the world do people make such perfect music out of a 7/8 time signature?
what do you mean? 7/8 is magical.
Having written lots of music writing in 7/8 is like a cheat code to make beautiful sounding music. Also a chest code to making the grooviest music ever.
Even though this song is 12 minutes, it flew by so fast! The sax and piano solos might just be the best solos I’ve heard in Jazz... like ever.
This is an amazing piece with fucking amazing musicians playing it. Music doesn't get much better than this.
The bass solo, oh my god, what a thrill
Love the clown goin in hard at 5:23
hahaha, i'll never be able to hear that part the same way again

Words do not describe, what i've just heard ….wow
I just found the liquid tension of the jazz world !!! If before we had Joe Petrucci demonstrating a masterpiece in the world of progressive metal now Kamasi Washington offers that glimpse of the supreme musical art called Jazz !!! Congratulations of Sao Paulo Brazil
Perfection achieved!
Magnífico!
THIS is why I LOVE JAZZ!! MUSIC. please come to CHICAGO.U BAD!!!
this guy will change the history of jazz.
+Alexis Campos lol that doesn't make any sense. how will he change the history of jazz?
+Matt you're right, history doesn't change

+Eric Fricke That Snarky Puppy is pretty awesome, it's really cool to see a group like that get some attention.
Kind of a late reply, but the band stereolab lives almost exclusively in irregular time signatures.
+dahalofreeek there are some. NIN, Tool. Dream Theater. often, progressive bands like Jethro Tull and Genesis. +Archie Farrer The bassists on this are Stephen Bruner on electric and Miles Mosley on acoustic.
dahalofreeek Stephen Bruner often goes under the name Thundercat
Oh lol
+Archie Farrer He is a human treasure, for sure.
+Archie Farrer I didn't realize this was Thundercat. He's brilliant. Seen him live last year at Sony, went on right before his right-hand man, Flying Lotus.
I'm digging his choral parts in his tracks seems to be a reoccurring effect on me
Who is that on piano!!
Oh shit, he has invented.......PROG JAZZ
It's all about the resistance. Those who are oppressed keep fighting for god will soon bring justice to those of the wicked and sick minded.

Shares a similarity with -- He's Missta Know it All - Stevie Wonder -- So dope!!
just realised most of the song is in 7/4... hence the name?
I think it might be in 7/8, it sounds like the pulse is divided into 2|2|3 eighth notes for a lot of it
the magnificent 7/8
3:06
the choir reminds me of P. Glass/Ravi Shankar stuff. Quite a quote or quite the same.
"kind of blue is untoppable"
O.O

For some reason, this kinda reminds me of Starless by king crimson.
Dont know where i here it though.

@@soroteca71 i would almost bet real money that he has heard everything by King Crimson.
C9 Sneaky brought me here
Bayonetta?
It's in 7/4 lol
¿Evangelion?
Bosch Legacy brought me here.
