After listening to this album, I felt as though I just finished reading a really really good novel! This man could single-handedly change the face of jazz music!
WOW!!!! I can see Myles, Thelonious, and Charlie (Bird) Parker in heaven bumping and high-fiving to this!!!!! This is how Jazz was meant to sound!!!! More than impressive Mr. Kamasi... more than impressive! Well played sir... VERY well played!
At 4:33 ... I know that the purpose of this song is totally different from what I feel at this very moment, I know that the meaning for "love" that this song tries to express serves to another meaning, but, I have to say, I am surrended, no matter how much weight to take life forward force me to give up, in this small moment that I quoted, I gain breath, and I realize that I need to continue, why? Why ... it's like this, this is LIFE, this is living, in that small moment, I realize that I reach a limit, then I stop, I gain breath and I see that I have the strength to continue facing whatever challenge is ahead, a breath that I was waiting and gives me POWER to keep gowing and not give up, this is something that only music, that little moment in time like this can provide me, I cant express this feeling literally, I can only tell you that this is powerfull enough to keep me STRONG, and makes me LUCID, AWAKENED, and ALERT to the LIFE, this forces me to understand that the best of EVERYTHING is yet to come. This is reminiscent of early 1970's Pharoah Sanders with Lonnie Listen Smith, Joe Bonner, et. al. I especially like the background voices. Nicely done.
Excellent work from this young talent - jazz is not meant to be background music, it's meant to uplift and inspire, and this album does just that! A great vision brought to fruition in this "Epic" new recording. Glad it's on vinyl - will be my next purchase. Big thumbs up!
+Chris Velour you will not be disappointed with the vinyl. It plays a bit quiet but it's worth it to have such an immense album like this in such a nice package.
+Chris Velour In my humble opinion, its best on its own but it worked really well on Kendrick Lamars To Pimp A Butterfly, with screaming sax solos and electric bass solos from Thundercat playing behind kendricks rap
Stephen Bruner - wow, amazing bassist. Reminds me of Wes Montgomery a little bit, though he was a guitarist. Every musician in these songs have been amazing. This music is amazing and IT'S NEW, as a huge fan of Coltrane, Sanders, Brotzmann, Sun Ra, and any and all avante garde jazz musicians, it makes me so so so happy to know that someone is carrying on this music and mindset in such a well done way. This whole album is awesome! Is it me, or does this song sound kinda reminiscent of "Like Sonny" by John Coltrane? I know they're two completely different songs, but it sounds like both songs have similar tensions and resolutions throughout. Try humming or playing the melody of Like Sonny along with one of the solos and you can really hear it. Just though it was kinda cool since Kamasi seems to be heavily influenced by Trane...
