Actually, I see the "Sleepwalker" album as the beginning of a phase in which Ray ceased composing "Rock Operas" in favor of simply writing great pop/rock songs again. The trend continued on "Misfits", "Low Budget", "Give The People What They Want", and "State of Confusion".
Too right! A year ago I knew only the famous Sunny afternoon.. lola, autumn almanac, days etc which are still awesome of course, but slowly I am discovering these great 70s unknown gems, so many undervalued songs which how the hell did not chart I cannot explain....
1:44 - 1:46 that little section of Dave's guitar solo, I just love that. He's so underrated as a lead guitarist. I know people know he's a great guitarist, but mention of him alongside "known great guitarists" seems not often.
No, he said he was his favorite rock 'n' roll songwriter. Think about what you are saying, or putting words in the mouths of, before posting. Did you really think that Townshend would have thought that Ray Davies is greater than Beethoven? C'mon, man.
WOW what an awesome version.......where have all these cool video's been hiding all these years?Thank God for You Tube!!!!!!!!!!!! God Save the Kinks in 2009!!!!!!!!!!
I've seen 'em all. The Who. The Stones. Macca. Levon Helm. Gregg Allman. Cheap Trick. Aerosmith.... The Kinks show I was privileged to be in the audience of (of?) back at the Avalon in Boston Spring "93 was by far the greatest rock show I have ever seen in me life. I had the good fortune to meet Ray at Heathrow airport in London shortly after I saw the Kinks in Boston. I was (how do you Brits say?) GOBSMACKED!!!! God Save the KInks.
@@sommerioslo seen them in new brighton around the same time promoting the phobia album, ray was in full swing giving it loads and an old lady got out of her seat and hovelled to the toilet and the look on rays face as if to say ' oh f*** what are we doing here'
I love OGWT videos, pure rock and musical genius on display with nearly every band. And this vid is great, we even get a Bob Harris bonus appearance!! :)
Ray Davies is and was the only talent in the Kinks. The rest of the guys were and always are very replaceable. Dave Davies only gets respect cos he's been riding Ray's coattails since day one.
Mick Avory is one of the best drummers to ever play; Dave wasn't only an absolutely brilliant guitarist and innovator, but also a great vocalist and songwriter himself; Pete was a great bass player and will forever be missed. I don't know about anyone but the original four apart from John Gosling (who wasn't the best of all time but still good), but the original 4 were all absolutely amazing in their own right, even if you don't like them (and if you don't that's fine, I really don't give a shit that's not the point of this comment) I don't see how anyone could see them as riding off of Ray, that's complete rubbish. Sorry if this comment came off a bit rude btw, I'm just trying to share my opinion as did you, I'm not trying to make you mad or start a worthless chat argument with someone I don't even know, just want a conversation.
Love how Ray and Dave sing together. That shouldn't be overlooked.
Fantastic band. Seen the kinks 5 times, deliver every time , sleepwalker album still spin it regularly today. Love the band.🎸👌
Sleepwalker was a great album and tour--under-appreciated.
Been a longtime Kinks fan, but I don't know their 70s and 80s output very well. So great to find nuggets like this all the time!
Dave’s tone is friggin perfect🎶🎵🎶
Dave Davies is an underrated lead guitar player....
He was ranked number 88 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.”
He really is.Muswell Hillbillies is especially great as a departure for brother Dave the guy is fabulous.
+Don R. Mueller, Ph.D. RS is a fashion rag
way too low. he is a rock machine!
I LOVE that gold-top Les Paul he's playing. Awesome tone, it sounds freaking massive
Magnificent live version of an incredible tune by the immortal Kinks!!!!

Ray counting down his latest, and Dave kicking it in. It doesn't get any better. Thanks for the post.
I saw them many times in NYC where they were always a great show and rollicking semi drunk God save the Kinks!
Dave is fucking killing it in that solo man wtf.
Yesssss

I love Dave's tone and pinch harmonics, especially in the solo at the end!

Pete Townsend himself said Ray was the greatest musical writer of all times.

@@brianhammer5107 Beethoven was just a dog in a couple movies though. I didn't know a canine could write songs.
Wow! Thanx for posting! This is great! Wish could go back to 1977!
One of the very best British invasion bands !
i love this version of the song
WOW what an awesome version.......where have all these cool video's been hiding all these years?Thank God for You Tube!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Small Faces are great group.
I've seen the Kinks four times. And the last time in 93, Ray asked me from the stage which song I wanted to hear. This is a true story.
@@sommerioslo seen them in new brighton around the same time promoting the phobia album, ray was in full swing giving it loads and an old lady got out of her seat and hovelled to the toilet and the look on rays face as if to say ' oh f*** what are we doing here'
They really were, the greatest live band, ever!
The Davies' brothers together is a great combo.
Viva The Kinks - The best band ever
Dave's guitar bit sounds bigger here than in the studio version of this song where it is just blended in to the rest of the music.
I think the 70s where the best time for the Kinks.
What am I saying the 60s 70s 80s and 90s where the best time
This was an excellent album...
Still have my vinyl.
In the beginning The Kinks created Punk.....and the rest of us followed along.....
I remember watching this, still great.........
God save the Kinks!❤
One of the top five groups to come out of England. Stones, Beatles, Who, Zep
and the Who
Sorry. The Small Faces are great group.
I'd say that's correct if you just swap the Faces with the who
Moody Blues and Zombies too
And Take That.
Wow! Another excellent upgrade of Kinks video. Thank you for sharing all of these great Kinks videos, Whiterose63!!
I love OGWT videos, pure rock and musical genius on display with nearly every band. And this vid is great, we even get a Bob Harris bonus appearance!! :)
these guys are the best
It was the month when Dave met his new flame Nancy, wasn`t it? Maybe that was the reason for his adorable guitar solo? Dave is adorable anyway.
Just love the Kinks,
fantastic song
Well, yet another reason to LOVE the Kinks!
"Night stalker - sleepwalker" - could be a song about men with no boundaries - with lust in control. What do you reckon?
Ty For Posting !!!!!
Such great rhythm work from Dave here...
Dave Davies guitar playing is as good as anyone....EVER !!!!
GREAT SONG/GO DAVE!!!
Could someone tell me what is on Ray's forehead. It is distracting me from this great song.
The show they are on is "The Old Grey Whistle Test". On his head is a badge with the shows logo on it.
The question is why is it on his forehead !
@@Farmlandsfallfan Because Ray is part Crazy
Props to Mr. Dave Davies!
kinks are getting back together!
The kinks still in seventies.
Well, yet another reason to LOVE the Kinks!
I also like the two gals harmonizing... sexy 70s outfits.-

I bet that badge on rays forehead is really hurting him, the fastener must have gone right threw his skin, but no blood?
How do.i get my comnent back nightfencer
too all asking why Ray has a button on his head.......... why the heck not?
Too much , so great guitars !
Hope the Kinks are cashing in on their (his) catchy licks
It's as if he's had 3 recessions and 3 recoveries
Love Dave getting into it at 3:42
@misfit59 i completely agreed ,with you!
Why has he got a badge on his forehead?
Who is that on keys?
@jfig1000 sorry fo not being precise, but you got the drift.
What's that on his head?
I think it's the logo for show, The Old Grey Whistle Test.
@texadillo53
John Gosling
spin doctors solo from two princes sounds similar like dave
Sticking a pin through your forehead skin because, why not? That's entertainment
hes a night stalker...he is a sleep walker with the creatures of the night
He is on the list on the 100 best guitar but Dave should be much Higher on the list

Dave is ripping and showcasing his chops on this performance...
